AI usage as search engine
Hi all,
I would like to ask for your opinion regard a matter on AI use, especially on AI use as search engine to reference material such news article or papers.
I already seen people complaining here about slide deck generated with AI, and although I have mixed feeling about it, as long the lecturer is prepared and able to engage with the students during the delivery of the content, I do not mind them.
With this being said, in this particular subject, we were required to do a weekly written assignment and submit on canvas.
The format could be either PDF or DOCX. Given that has to been type, you of course would be using your laptop, and everyone know how the affordance of google and other tools are AI driven more than ever. You can barely search a query that you get the AI report summary.
For the report, no AI was allowed, and it was stated that the grader can ALWAYS tell, I think that as right now, that might be a bold.
Modern models, if correctly steered, can mimic a mid-graduate student level, and do not sound to sloppy with the periphrastic like (it's not x, it's y). I have some strong opinion about this testing method, but I am not asking your opinion about this.
During the course of the lecture, we were asked to submit the report at the end of the lecture (usually).
So basically for 12 weeks, it would be 12 written report (actually less than that because for the last week there would be a final quiz, and some of the week has other activity replacing the report).
Those report are going to be graded only if selected by this pool. (There are 10 report in the pool, only 4 will be graded and the best 3 will be used to determine the final grade).
Here I would argue about the rest of the work that has not been selected for grading, basically just some busy work? I am not sure how to feel about it.
So we would not receive the grade straight away, but after several weeks, when the pool drawing has been done.
[I forgot to mention that those written report count as group work, so multiple people are suppose to write on the same document]
From my perspective, the end result of the report always feel like a zombie, tons of small pieces merged together, as the time limit constrain would not allow the group to brain storm, decide the task, and re-read the entire draft before submitting. Those report has to be like a mini-literature reviews, with citation and so on.
One of the report that has been graded had the source tag as gpt in the link, so it was referencing a paper and at the end of the link it would say “source=chat-gpt”.
This was used as a warning about the "AI NOT ALLOWED", and stated that the corrector has found something wrong with the report, and after digging deeper it found the link source and might be flagged as AI content generated.
Now as I am preparing for the final quiz, I was reviewing all the material on canvas, and I happen to notice that the same thing happened for several source uploaded by the lecturers.
The link on canvas contained the “source=chat-gpt”, simply meaning that the search engine used was GPT instead of google.
I do not want to raise useless and fruitless controversy about this matter, but I am not sure how to address it properly.
As One way, I would like to be provided with material that are actually useful and meaningful for the subject, and not feel overwhelm with tons news article, and research paper to do busy work.
The same thing apply to the grading and evaluation, I would like my work to have a purpose and a meaning, not just do it and hope the best one will be selected for marking.
What do you think about this?
