Didnt expect it to come this soon. The 24 team playoff pending approval as soon as next season. A bigger chance for UConn as a Independent or will the SEC and Big 10 use it to stack spots?

My plan for an on-campus Stadium

Post image
16 Upvotes

Our lease at the Rent expires on June, 30th, 2028, and currently costs the state nearly 3 million / year.

I'm * 100% sure our playing in East Hartford was *supposed to be only a temporary plan - the building of the Rent so cheaply with no real character and the location confirms this. Legislature at the time wanted UConn to fail and they made sure to cut corners with this endeavor.

However, times have changed - the State now realizes that the better UConn athletics is - the more lucrative it will be for the State.

its TIME to fix the half-assed attempt of moving up to the FBS Level by the state some* 20 years ago.

WE NEED TO MOVE THE STADIUM BACK TO STORRS AND WE NEED TO STOP PUNISHING OUR STUDENTS FOR THE STATE'S LACK OF FORESIGHT .

IT'S THE STUDENTS WHO MAKE THE STADIUM ENVIRONMENT - THE STUDENTS ARE PAYING FOR THE UCONN EXPERIENCE AND WE NEED TO MAKE SURE IT'S EASIER FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE GAMES.

the image shows the proposed location in red* for the Football stadium and the football complex. it'll be right next to parking LOT C - this will be the exclusive tail gating lot for games - the area will be around 25-30 acres - so it'll be plenty of space for the 60-80,000 seating stadium along with all of our football facilities and practice fields. It will have plenty of parking in the university parking system - along with a huge parking lot on route 44 where the dollar general currently sits . Parking will not be an issue. the stadium will be accessible by campus shuttle - or you can use your legs and walk 5-10 minutes depending on where you parked.

- Traffic wont be much different than what it is now - you will be able to access the stadium by route 195, 44, or 32 - it wont increase much traffic so Mansfield residents wont care.

- it's situated near most of the dorms and off campus student housing and greek life. but even if you live in south or buckley, the shuttle is right there .. or u can walk the extra 10 minutes .

- Home games will provide a campus wide boost in school spirit and give students something to remember *about school life.. in storrs .. after they leave. - you know.. PROMOTE the CULTURE and the BRAND.

- Stadium is entirely inside campus territory so the noise wont be an issue to the surrounding areas.

- We're already wasting money away in the tune of 3 million / year leasing the Rent anyway . having an iconic stadium on campus will save money down the road

**

- Also having an iconic stadium on campus would give us a better path to p4 conference and retain our coaching staff - it would make UConn a destination not a stepping stone - WE WANT OUR TALENT TO WANT TO STAY IN STORRS - NOBODY WANTS A STADIUM 20 MILES AWAY FROM CAMPUS WITH A BAD ATMOSPHERE .

- HAVING A CAMPUS 20 MILES AWAY - WE 'RE MISSING OUT ON THE PAGEANTRY OF THE GAME - AND THAT'S EXTREMELY LACKING IN UCONN FOOTBALL - WE'RE NOT DEVELOPING THE FOOTBALL CULTURE NECESSARY TO PROPEL OUR PROGRAM TO THE NEXT LEVEL - THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR FOOTBALL!

- THE SOONER WE DO THIS , THE SOONER WE SAVE MONEY AND GENERATE MORE MONEY IF MONEY IS WHAT'S DRIVING YOUR DECISION

this is THE best location for a campus stadium. it's good for the school. good for teh students. GREAT FOR THE STATE!

** also the school and the state SHOULD NOT CUT CORNERS this time - the stadium has to be an iconic landmark for UConn - the design must be something that'll withstand the test of time

#UCONN STORRS STADIUM 2028!

** oh i found a petition to build a stadium in Storrs - plz sign it

Takeaways: Football season takes a positive turn going into bye

Thumbnail

UConn football is 3-3 after a well-earned 34-20 win at Temple. The Huskies set the tone with the first touchdown and barely trailed as they closed the victory with a decisive fourth quarter. After forcing a fumble and driving for a TD, they forced a three-and-out and then ran down the clock with a heavy dose of the run before a field goal to put the game out of reach.

Thoughts as UConn returns to an even record (3-3) heading into their bye week.

The Run Game Emerges

The offensive line continues to improve, opening up holes for long runs from every running back. Kenji Christian scored a 39-yard TD but didn't play much. Cyncir Bowers had two 10+ yard runs as he finished with 84 yards and a TD, and Trey Cornist broke two 40+ yard runs in the second quarter, leading to a touchdown and a field goal at the end of the half.

"Just a really good individual efforts by our backs," head coach Jason Candle said in a post-game interview with Fox Sports Radio. "Our O-Line fought the whole day. The first two drives of the game, they really controlled the line of scrimmage."

Christian is dealing with a leg injury reportedly but has the bye to rest. With all three backs, this formidable group keeps the Husky offense balanced and dangerous. All three have also proven to be capable receivers out of the backfield.

Key Defensive Stops

Over six weeks, the UConn defense has shown its vulnerabilities. But it's also shown up to make big plays, like the fourth-quarter interception against Syracuse to keep that game tied, or the turnovers that helped decide the Temple game.

In the second quarter, a Temple fumble led to a UConn field goal before halftime. In the fourth quarter, the Huskies scored a decisive touchdown to go up 11 after the Owls coughed it up a second time. After allowing two easy touchdowns in the first quarter, UConn allowed just six points the rest of the game.

"You don't start the game how you want, but our kids settled in and played a really solid second half on defense," Candle said in an interview with Fox Sports Radio.

Kalieb Osborne Keeps Getting Better

The Huskies starting QB is a demon. His ability to make something out of nothing while keeping his eyes downfield has created multiple big plays this season. With 57 seconds left in the first half, and UConn facing 4th & 6 on the Temple 33, Osborne absorbed a big hit as he identified Shamar Porter flying upfield in man coverage and got the throw off. Porter did an incredible job of coming down with that ball and that big play gave the Huskies a lead and momentum going into the break.

Osborne completed 74% of his 23 attempts for 257 yards with a rushing touchdown. Eight of his 17 completions went for 15+ yards and he's getting all of his weapons involved. He hit nine different receivers on the day. Candle said he's been pleased with the young passer's progress.

Critical plays lead UConn football to 34-20 road victory at Temple

Thumbnail

The UConn football team responded from back-to-back close losses with a hard-fought, 34-20 road victory at Temple on Saturday.

It was a major swing at the end of the first half – a UConn touchdown, followed by a Temple fumble and a UConn field goal as time expired – that put the Huskies in control. Their defense, after a rough first half, put the game away as it forced a second fumble in the fourth quarter and held the Owls to just three points after the break.

Quarterback Kalieb Osborne starred as he completed 17 of 23 passes for 257 yards and made critical plays with his legs. UConn had 248 yards rushing with the attack led by Trey Cornist’s 117 yards on seven carries and Cyncir Bowers’ 84 yards on 18 attempts. Both scored a rushing touchdown, along with Osborne and Kenji Christian, who was limited. Ryder Treadway led the team in receiving with a season-high 63 yards on three catches.

UConn improved to 3-3 in its first year under head coach Jason Candle as Temple dropped to 2-4.

Both teams scored on all-but one offensive possession in the first half as Osborne’s initial rushing score was answered immediately by a 79-yard heave over the top of the Huskies’ struggling secondary. Christian, who missed last week’s game with a hamstring injury, announced his return with a 39-yard touchdown run, only to be answered by a double pass from the Owls, which resulted in a 29-yard touchdown from receiver Colin Chase to tight end Peter Clarke.

It was the only run of the day for Christian, whose status was not immediately clear.

UConn turned the ball over on downs just before the end of the first quarter and held the Owls to a 26-yard field goal at the end of a 12-play, 85-yard drive as it fell behind, 17-14.

Cornist, who made the touchdown catch in overtime last week, showed off his sprinters’ speed twice in the half. First was a 51-yard run to the 5-yard line, which he eventually finished in the end zone to put the Huskies back in front. Then he had a 44-yard burst that jump started the Huskies’ final drive of the half. That run came one play after Temple, trying to bleed the clock in anticipation of receiving the second half kickoff, saw running back Keveun Mason get stripped by Renick Dorilas and the fumble recovery go to safety Braedyn Moore.

Facing 4th-and-6 from the Temple 33-yard line with less than a minute left in the half, Osborne took a hard hit as he dropped a perfect pass in the bucket for Shamar Porter inside the 5-yard line. The ball was moved up to the 1 due to the roughing the passer penalty and, after a muffed snap and a sack, UConn escaped disaster with a last-second spike and closed the half with a 21-yard chip shot for kicker Jack O’Connor to push the lead to 24-17.

While the first half started with seven scores on nine offensive chances, the second started with four straight punts before Temple cut into its deficit with a 29-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

It looked like the game might be slipping away from the Huskies as penalties killed their flow on offense and Temple was leaning on its running game. The Owls were across midfield and driving when Sheppard looked to throw and had his arm arm hit by the helmet of Shamar Riser-Pressley, forcing the ball free for a K’Von Sherman fumble recovery, UConn’s second of the day.

The Huskies capitalized on the short field with Bowers bouncing to the outside for an 8-yard score that pushed the lead to 31-20 with just less than eight minutes to play.

O’Connor tacked on a 27-yard field goal in the final two minutes for good measure.

Half-way through its season, UConn will have a bye week before returning to Rentschler Field for a bigger-than-usual game against UMass (4-2) on Friday night, Oct. 23.

How UConn football stacks up in national rankings

Thumbnail
courant.com
10 Upvotes

Through five weeks, the UConn football team has started to figure things out.

Expectations were set high for the start of the Jason Candle era after the Huskies set a new program record with 671 yards of offense in their opener against Lafayette. But they were quickly brought back to earth as the pass defense was exposed in a 38-14 home loss to a Maryland team that has struggled since.

Candle’s team looked like it figured something out in a convincing road win at Southern Miss in Week 3, but then surrendered a 14-point lead to lose at Miami, Ohio, and saw its own comeback from 20 points down come up short in overtime against Syracuse last weekend.

So the Huskies are 2-3 as they go on the road to Lincoln Financial Field, where they’ll meet Temple (2-3) on Saturday.

Here is how they stack up nationally:

Offense

Quarterback Kalieb Osborne started to find his groove in the second half against Syracuse and now finds himself 41st nationally in passing yards with 1,164 and No. 20 in QB rushing yards with 243 on 53 attempts.

Running back Cyncir Bowers, coming off of his 163-yard effort against Syracuse, has the 55th-most rushing yards in the country with 349 on the season. And, with 14 different receivers who have at least 30 yards, five over 100, the Huskies don’t have anyone in the top 200 for receiving yards as they approach the midway point of the season. Javon Brown, the team’s leading receiver with 202 yards on 14 catches, is No. 208 nationally, though he will miss some time after suffering a concussion on Saturday.

Nonetheless, the trio has helped UConn to the No. 38 scoring offense in the country at 36 points per game.

The Huskies are No. 43 in total offense (438 yards per game), No. 46 in rushing (181.6) and No. 47 in passing (256.4). They rank No. 56 in red zone scoring percentage at 88.24%, No. 66 in 3rd down conversion percentage (41.94%) and No. 95 on 4th down (45.45%).

While Bowers’ 71-yard rushing touchdown tied Saturday’s game in the fourth quarter, it was only UConn’s 22nd run of the season that’s gone for at least 10 yards – a category in which the Huskies rank 74th nationally. They’ve had 51 passes for at least 10 yards, good for 28th in the nation.

The offense has contributed to UConn’s 44 penalties on the year. Only seven teams have been flagged more.

Defense

Unlike on the offensive side of the ball, where there is a clear balance in passing and rushing success, the defense has had a clear issue with the ball in the air and the numbers back it up.

The Huskies have the third-worst passing defense in the country, allowing 290.8 yards per game (No. 136 of 138), including 50 passes of 10 yards or more, which ranks 121st. They’ve been much better against the run, limiting opponents to 110.8 rushing yards per game, which is good for No. 35 nationally, and only 11 runs of 10 yards or more (No. 10).

All in all, the defense has allowed 26.2 points per game (No. 97) and 401.6 total yards of offense per game (No. 112). It’s seen opponents convert on 43.59% of their 3rd down opportunities (No. 111), 50% on 4th down (No. 61) and score on 84.21% of their trips into the red zone.

Hayden Pegg, the walk-on turned starting linebacker, leads the team with 35 total tackles, which puts him at No. 99 nationally. He is the 20th-highest rated linebacker by Pro Football Focus and the only UConn linebacker in the top 400. UConn’s sack leader, K’Von Sherman, is No. 49 nationally with 3.0 on the season, and he’s also been credited for three forced fumbles, which is second in the nation.

Special teams

UConn’s special teams units, led by freshman placekicker Jack O’Connor and punter Tommy Warner, have been exceptional at limiting return opportunities. Opponents have only attempted to return one punt, which went for 3.0 yards (No. 27), and three kickoffs for an average of 11.67 yards (No. 5).

In the placekicking game, O’Connor’s career has gotten off to a 2-for-4 start with both misses coming from 40-plus yards, one in each of the last two weeks after making his first two kicks at Southern Miss. He missed his first extra point attempt of the season on Saturday to get to 23 of 24 on the season.

Julian Allen has been a quality punt returner with 75 yards on six opportunities (No. 51) and had his first breakaway on a kickoff return for 48 yards against Syracuse, which brought him to 73 yards on three returns (No. 99).

Dave Portnoy suggests bringing Barstool College Football Show to Rentschler Field for UConn-UMass [Joe Arruda ]

Thumbnail

EAST HARTFORD – There may be some extra attention coming to Rentschler Field for what is turning into a much-anticipated edition of the UConn-UMass football rivalry on Friday night, Oct. 23.

With the recent resurgence of the UConn program and UMass starting its season 4-0, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy – a Boston-area native – suggested he might bring the Barstool College Football Show to the matchup in East Hartford.

Responding to an X post about UMass having sold out Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan, its first sellout since 2014, Portnoy wrote: “What if I said I wanted to bring the Barstool College football (show) to beautiful Hartford for UMass vs. UConn in a few weeks?”

Barstool’s College Football Show is a similar live production to ESPN’s College GameDay and Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff, broadcast on YouTube, and would be an added draw for students to make the 25-mile trip from Storrs ahead of the 7 p.m. kickoff.

UConn Athletic Director David Benedict posted his support of Portnoy’s suggestion: “(Pizza) and a ballgame! Happy to host you!” he wrote, using a pizza emoji.

Portnoy, known for his One Bite Pizza Reviews, has rated New Haven’s classics as some of the best in the country.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont also responded to Portnoy on X: “Come on down, Dave. You bring Barstool, we’ll bring the pizza. UConn football can handle the rest.”

Portnoy had been part of Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff crew for just over a year before he and Barstool’s other personalities were removed this weekend, claiming that complaints stemming from Ohio State coach Ryan Day led to the split. Portnoy is an outspoken Michigan fan.

“Ohio State and Ryan Day (bleeped) and moaned to the Big 10 and threatened Fox till they had no choice. Juice wasn’t worth the squeeze and frankly I don’t blame them. Huge dollars at stake and you have Cryin Ryan throwing temper tantrums and making threats every few days on something I said,” he wrote, in part, on X. “The Barstool College Football will continue on.”

Rentschler Field gets new logo sponsor

UConn was the first NCAA school to paint the logo of its NIL fundraising arm, Storrs Central, on its home field in 2024. After two seasons with the logo on each 25-yard line, the space was empty for the Huskies’ first two home games this year.

On Saturday, the Connecticut-based William Raveis real estate logo made its debut.

Bowers steps up big

UConn needed Cyncir Bowers to have a big game on Saturday after losing Kenji Christian to an undisclosed injury during last week’s loss at Miami (OH).

The junior West Virginia transfer answered the bell with 163 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-tying burst from 71 yards out in the fourth quarter.

“Explosive player. He runs hard, he do his best, any way he can he’ll do whatever for the team,” quarterback Kalieb Osborne said, after the Huskies lost to Syracuse, 42-41, in overtime on Saturday. “I see that in him and being close with him, I see what he wants to learn and he’ll do anything he can to be a better player. He just shows that every day in practice and shows that he cares, and it showed on the field today.”

Notes

The Kerr brothers, Davien and Davion, Bloomfield products playing for Syracuse, were both able to see the field Saturday. Davien, a defensive back, made four tackles and two pass breakups. The younger Davion, a running back and special teamer, returned a punt for three yards and ran twice for six. … There were 19 total penalties called in Saturday’s game, 11 on UConn and eight on Syracuse: “No college football game should ever have 19 penalties,” coach Jason Candle said. “You can take that wherever you want to take it.”

UConn football falls to Syracuse in overtime after epic comeback [ Joe Arruda ]

EAST HARTFORD – An epic comeback came up just short at Rentschler Field on Saturday as the UConn football team fell to Syracuse in overtime for the second year in a row, 42-41.

The game looked over when the Orange completed a 4-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-23 to push their lead to three scores midway through the third quarter. But the Huskies, debuting their new red uniform tops, scored 20 unanswered points to tie the game with 12 minutes left in regulation.

UConn scored first in the extra period, 27 points in a row, but Syracuse answered and converted on the 2-point conversion to win the game.

It was a valiant effort from quarterback Kalieb Osborne, who struggled in the first half but finished the game having completed 19 of 39 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns, distributing the ball to 10 different receivers.

With lead back Kenji Christian out, Cyncir Bowers stepped up with a career-best 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the game-tying score from 71 yards in the fourth quarter.

For Syracuse, the decision to go with backup Amari Odom over Steve Angeli at quarterback may have been a season-changer.

The junior Kennesaw State transfer completed 27 of his 37 passes for 335 yards and five touchdowns, adding another score on the ground. He was intercepted twice.

UConn, falling to 2-3 on the year, finished the game with 499 total yards to Syracuse’s 509.

Odom started his day making the best of a broken play on the first drive of the game for the Orange, picking the ball off the grass after a shaky snap and finding Umari Hatcher wide open for a 40-yard touchdown over the top.

The Huskies answered after Osborne escaped a sack and found Ryder Treadway for 30 yards before a defensive holding call set up a 9-yard touchdown to Cam Abshire, which put the Huskies up, 7-6, after blocking the initial Syracuse extra point attempt.

With a solid traveling crowd, the Orange quickly seized the momentum with a pair of explosive plays through the air and Odom connected with Noah Meyers for a diving touchdown from the 4-yard line. After an errant snap and an illegal forward pass snuffed the Huskies’ ensuing drive, Odom completed a 27-yard pass to set up his own 6-yard rushing score.

Syracuse got the ball back with a strip sack fumble on Osborne and Odom connected with Hatcher again for his fifth explosive pass of the day, which was caught in the end zone for 41 yards, giving the Orange a 27-7 lead with three minutes left in the half.

Bowers fumbled on the first play after Julian Allen’s 48-yard kickoff return, but UConn was able to end the half on a positive note after Syracuse missed a field goal from 46 yards. Taking over with less than two minutes left, Osborne connected with receiver Javon Brown on three straight plays to get into the red zone. Finally, after two sacks and two major Syracuse penalties, UConn went to Trey Cornist to punch in from the 4 and cut the deficit to 27-14 at the break.

UConn’s struggles against the pass gave Syracuse the confidence to go for it on 4th and 23 after a Hayden Pegg sack, and Fran Brown’s gamble paid off as Odom found Daunte Bacheyie wide open for a 34-yard touchdown to start the second half. The Huskies answered with a 10-yard rushing touchdown from Bowers to keep it a two-score game at 34-20 with about four minutes left in the third quarter.

A diving interception by Renick Dorilas got the ball back to UConn in prime position to score. Osborne targeted Brown in the end zone from 31 yards, but the ball was knocked away by Syracuse DB Nazir Ward and Brown went down in a scary scene. He was taken off the field on a stretcher with all of his teammates running over to wish him well, but the exact injury was not immediately clear.

UConn failed to convert on 4th down but forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back and Osborne connected with Ky “Flash” Wilson, a transfer making his season debut after recovering from a torn ACL, for a highlight one-handed catch and a 27-yard gain. Osborne rolled out and found tight end Xavier Watson from seven yards out to make it a one-score game, 34-27, with the whole fourth quarter to play.

The Huskies forced a punt and, two plays later, Bowers broke free for 71 yards to the house, his second touchdown tying the game with 12 minutes left.

Handling the pressure of an epic collapse, Syracuse methodically marched down to the Huskies’ 7-yard line before Odom’s pass into the end zone was snagged by Jayden Price at the 1. UConn marched 61 yards down the field but failed to convert after a false start on 4th-and-1, giving the Orange the ball back at their own 38 with a timeout and 1:36 on the game clock. But the 44-yard field goal attempt was no good as time expired in regulation.

Osborne found Cornist for a 25-yard touchdown to open the overtime and UConn kicked the extra point. But Odom answered with a touchdown on 4th-and-17 and dove in for the 2-point conversion and the win.

UConn will be back on the road next week for a 3:45 p.m. kickoff at Temple.

Game Recap Reframing today’s nail biter loss

This will be a good learning experience for the defense. Too many penalties and mistakes can make a difference. And it is probably better to look towards the rest of the schedule to be hungry for more than it is to not fix the fundamentals. These losses are arguably a necessary trade for more wins next year.

The coaching needs to instill more confidence in these guys and created too much of a hole in the first half. It’s time to let it rip.

Game Thread: Syracuse Orange vs. UConn Huskies

* Date: Saturday, October 3, 2026

* Time: 12:00 PM EDT

* Location: Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field — East Hartford, Connecticut

* Coverage: Regional Sports Networks / ESPN+

Team Overviews & Records

| Team | Record | Last Week | Key Note |

| Syracuse Orange | 1–2 | L 13–27 at Pittsburgh | Looking to snap a two-game skid after road conference play. |

| UConn Huskies | 2–2 | L 21–24 at Miami (OH) | Returning home after a tight road loss, seeking a signature regional win. |

Key Matchups to Watch

* UConn's Dual-Threat Ground Game vs. Syracuse Front Seven: Quarterback Kalieb Osborne and running backs Cyncir Bowers and Kenji Christian have driven the Huskies' rushing production. UConn needs sustained, clock-draining drives to keep the defense fresh.

* Syracuse Passing Attack: Quarterback Steve Angeli and Amari Odom will test the Huskies' secondary outside. Wide receiver Justus Ross-Simmons and tight end targets will be focal points in intermediate passing situations.

* Third-Down Efficiency & Red Zone Finishing: In tight contests, both squads have struggled with stall-outs inside the 20-yard line. Finishing possessions with touchdowns rather than field goal attempts will likely decide this regional rivalry matchup.

Thread Guidelines

* Keep discussion civil and focused on the game.

* Upvote quality analysis, stats, and highlights.
