I’m gonna be starting university next year and considering whether i should be applying for accommodation or not.
Technically I only live around 40 minutes by car, but I doubt it would actually take that long to drive in with all the traffic on the motorway. Also I’ve heard that getting parking at ucd is impossible as well.
If I were to stay at home and not live on campus, the main method of transport i’d probably use to get in would be a bus that takes 2 hours to get into ucd. again because of all the traffic, i’m almost certain it will take longer.
The main reason i’d want to live on campus is because of that travel time. If I were to have gaps between my lectures (which i’m pretty sure everyone does) it would be so annoying to have to stay out if it’s raining or cold.
Another thing however is the cost. I’ll be applying for the cheapest options for sure, the ones that are around 700 per month. my parents probably won’t be able to help out with the rent, so i’d definitely have to get a part time job. I might try to get the susi maintenance grant (which i would probably qualify for in terms of income although idk what else they take into account) which i could use for the rent.
I’ve heard some stories of people absolutely hating accommodation and I’ve also heard people saying to not work or to work very little during your first year to focus on exams and stuff. If anyone has any tips or opinions they’d like to share pls do.
(also one more question… if i got the accommodation and moved in and decided i absolutely hate it after 1 or 2 months, can i move out?)
