Rod Serling biography updates

We're one month out from the October 13 release of my Rod Serling biography, Serling: A Journey Into The Twilight Zone with TV's First Visionary, which I wrote about here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwilightZone/comments/1stuml6/i_wrote_a_book_about_rod_serling_and_the_twilight/

You can preorder the book here: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alan-sepinwall/serling/9781538773888/ And if you preorder, you can get a free bonus essay about my favorite Twilight Zone episode: https://hachettebookgroup.formstack.com/forms/serling

I have a lot of interviews and reviews and other stuff coming up. Rather than flood the subreddit with post after post, I'm going to put links to all of that stuff in here, updating daily. I'm happy to keep answering questions about it, and I'll keep participating in other people's threads, too.

Reviews are starting to roll in. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review: https://www.publishersweekly.com/9781538773888 Kirkus Reviews had high praise, too: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/alan-sepinwall/serling-2/

Every day between now and October 13th, I’ll be doing a video countdown of the 31 best episodes of the show. I started out with a tricky case: “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” which on the one hand is incredible, and on the other wasn’t actually made FOR The Twilight Zone. You can see that video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/K-_1eKeZtXM?feature=share

I hope you like it. And, regardless, I'm here to answer whatever, whenever.

For The New York Times, I wrote about how Rod Serling create The Twilight Zone in part because it was the only way in the 1950 and 60s for him to comment on the subjects he cared about most, and how that's a good blueprint for contemporary media to deal with our surreal current moment: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/07/opinion/twilight-zone-tv-america.html?unlocked_article_code=1.G1E.r6FD.2Ml75fCaX-cR&smid=url-share

Episode Discussion Just watched my first ever twilight zone episode and OH MY GOSH

I have heard of the Twilight Zone (who hasn't) and have been on Tower of Terror but I never actually bothered or cared to watch any of the episodes until now.

Recently for a English class we were analyzing McCarthy's speech on communists within the US government and so we watched the maple street episode (sorry that I don't remember the exact name) and I was just blown away by how good it was. The plot, the acting, the looming sense of dread, the message, the build up, it was all peak. 9/10 would have been higher had the episode found a better way to convince the town that aliens were among them outside some kid's comic story.

Anyway the episode got me interested in the show so please lemme know the best episodes/shows in the comments.

Something Rod Serling said that I think explains perfectly why most of the TZ reboots failed.

I remember reading somewhere that Rod Serling said that one of the biggest mistakes a writer could make is to be so focused on conveying a message or moral in whatever they are writing that they completely lose sight of the story and characters and that once that happens the audience won't care at all about whatever message you were trying to convey. I couldn't help but think about that with the TZ reboots especially the 2019 Jordan Peele one. Does anyone else here agree with him and feel it perfectly explained why the original worked and why the most recent reboot didn't?

Night Gallery Does Night Gallery just... suck??

Recently finished watching all the way through the original Twilight Zone, and decided to get into Rod Serling's Night Gallery. Ive watched like 5 episodes and honestly im really struggling with it. Tone, pacing, writing... yknow, the original series definitely has its misses, but Night Gallery feels like a major departure from the tone of the original show, and not in a way that works.

Should I be aware of any particularly good episodes? Are there good qualities of Night Gallery that I'm not looking for? Please help lol

Episode Discussion Starting from Square 1

Having watched as a kid in the 60’s I’m giving the series a run from the beginning.

For anyone who experienced this when the series started, how was it presented or advertised as a show back then? Similar to how shows are hyped now? Curious as what might have driven people to watch it!

No Season 5 on Netflix Canada

So the twilight zone finally dropped on Netflix, but I’m noticing it only shows four seasons. There was some talk earlier that maybe not having season four, but that seems to be there but for some reason they do not have season five.

Best eps filled with dread

There's an old archived thread on this topic, but I would like to ask today's posters which TZ episodes, of any of the iterations, give you a sense of extreme dread the most?

I'm not asking "What's your favorite episode?," which so many threads devolve into. Not talking about jump scares. I mean which ones hit you in the gut with dread, where you watch but almost can't stand to watch, and you almost shout, "Stop! Stop it!"

For me, I'll start with the "Nightcrawlers" segment of S1/E4 of the 1980s TZ.

Where To Watch I can’t find Shadow Play on prime!

The episode labeled for it plays the stupid one with Dick York instead (penny for your thoughts). I checked the episodes before and after as well as the episode labeled “Penny for your thoughts”

Where to watch 'The Big Tall Wish' in the UK

Dear all,

I would like to see 'The Big Tall Wish'. However, I can't seem to find a full version of this episode anywhere. Is there a place that I can watch it. I'm happy to pay a reasonable cost to view the episode.

I'm in the UK.

Franklin and The Fever

Was anyone else absolutely terrified of this episode? I searched and I was surpirsed to see how many people thought it was bland and boring.

I saw it when I was like 13. I know the machine at the end was tacky but by that time, 13 year old me was scared out of his mind. It was the buildup of "Franklin" voices with that creepy tone that was repeated throughout the entire episode that creeped me out the most. I still hear it To this day and I wont watch it lol

Episode Discussion Look for the name of an episode

I remember an episode where recently dead people are waiting at the gates of heaven. However, there is only room for one less than the people waiting to get in. They argue back and forth until one man gives up and agrees to go to hell.

The next scene is a baby being born.

Personal Experiences Apologies for my rambling: it's insane just how good the Twilight Zone is

People generally think that Television has gotten progressively better and better each decade, and that may be true, but the Twilight Zone exists as a complete anomaly to that notion. The Twilight Zone doesn't just "age well", to me, it still holds up as having better writing, better acting, and better camera work than any science fiction/horror show presently or since. What amazes me is the originality in each episode. I can't even say the show has any particular "feel", they did such a good job with setting an original tone for each episode. It just blows my mind how good the show is. Sorry for the rambling!

I recently got the Blu Ray set of the original series and am so impressed. I highly recommend it to fans of the show. It is definitely worth getting!

I don't own a lot of shows on Blu Ray (I think the only other two I have are Avatar The Last Airbender and Gravity Falls) and was a bit hesitant due to the cost of this set($70) but I decided I had held off on getting this long enough so I didn't want to wait until it eventually went out of print so I finally ordered the Blu Ray set and I'm glad I did. The picture quality is so amazing! It absolutely blows the complete DVD set out of the water. And unlike that cheaper complete DVD set this has all the extras from the previous definitive single season DVD releases. You not only have all the documentaries and director/writer commentaries, but actor commentaries, too! As an actor myself I love that this was included because I always love hearing how an actor approached a role and what they thought of their work especially on a series like this that I greatly admire.

I'm going to work my way through re-watching the show and plan on watching as many of the extras and commentaries as I can. To other TZ fans on here Do not hesitate to buy this especially considering what a great, high quality and timeless series TZ is. Yes I know TZ still plays on TV and is easily available on streaming, but this is one of the few shows I feel is worth owning a physical copy of.

Series Anniversary 67 Years Ago Today, Lightning Struck The Television World With A Simple Question ...

October 2, 1959, 10/9 Central CBS

Where Is Everybody?

"Mike Ferris finds himself walking into a town utterly devoid of people, with no memory of who he is or how he got there, the only clue to his identity being the Air Force jumpsuit he's wearing. Thus began the first episode of The Twilight Zone, the pilot, the half-hour that sold the series.

484 hours and 36 minutes later he laments:

"Hey! Don't go away up there! Next time it won't be a dream or a nightmare. Next time it'll be for real. So don't go away. We'll be up there in a little while."

https://twilightzone.fandom.com/wiki/Where_Is_Everybody%3F

And 67 years later, here we are. We haven't gone away.

The Prime Mover

I never understood the gambling scene with the gangsters. Was Phil Nolan's only strategy to wait for Ace to throw a bad toss? I mean, by the time they line up to "shoot the works," Ace has already taken Nolan to the cleaners. What makes Nolan think that Ace's next throw would fail? Why would he stick around that long assuming he'd eventually come out on top?

I know, suspension of disbelief. Still cracks me up every time.
