Cut Down the Demagoguery

We recognize that political discussion inherently gets heated. Yet the degree to which both sides are straight-up slandering the other is too far. This is a warning that we're going to start moderating this more strictly going forward. Examples include:

  • Calling Trump or Biden a "pedo"

  • Calling political candidates "evil" (if you ask me, apart from Christ they're all evil)

  • "Your party is ungodly"

  • "So and so is a bigot"

  • Etc.

Using emotionally loaded or morally condemnable labels to ignore facts and focus on slander as a way to win people's opinions is disgusting.

If you want to argue policies, argue policies. If you want to argue the morality of a policy, great, go do that THROUGH SCRIPTURE and not through your own humanly-fallible opinion. If you want to complain about the institution, party, or other political sect, focus on the why behind it and don't just skip to your conclusion. If you can't back up your moral judgments/condemnation through what the Bible says, bite your tongue or stick to logical argument against it rather than just tossing hate and slander.

Whether you like them or not, all political figures are still real people, loved by God, and warranting of our desire for their salvation and sanctification. If you're going to focus on the person instead of their conduct or policies, going forward I'm going to expect you to keep this principle in mind.

Use of "phobia"

Every now and then I see conversation come up about how using the term "transphobia" or "homophobia" is a form of demagoguery that exists purely to demonize one group of people through extreme-linguistics that aren't accurate to the meanings of the words. They are 100% correct.

From the research I've done on the topic, it's clear that these terms originated for socio-political agenda purposes. To cite the wiki on transphobia, we find that it didn't even exist as a recognized word until 2013 ...

Transphobia is not a phobia as defined in clinical psychology (i.e., an anxiety disorder) ... The words transphobia and transphobic were added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. (Source)

But I think everyone understands that the term "transphobia" is really an extension of the prior term "homophobia," which first entered the Oxford-English Dictionary in 1991 (to the best I can find). The word was coined in the 1960s by clinical psychologist George Weinberg as a genuine phobia for people who had "dread of being in close quarters with homosexuals." Notably ...

In his highly influential book *Society and the Healthy Homosexual (published in 1972), as well as in later interviews (Ayyar, 2002), he acknowledged the influence of the gay liberation movement on his thinking ... Positioning himself solidly within liberationist philosophy, Weinberg suggested that he "would never consider a patient healthy unless he had overcome his prejudice of homosexuality" (1972, p.1). (source)

Point being: the term was explicitly created for socio-political purposes by an activist who at first noticed what was perhaps a genuine phobia, but in a manner that led to an expanding scope of usage since then.

From there, it's unquestioned that the term has become part of ordinary socio-political rhetoric to the point that the dictionary has changed the term from its original use as a genuine panic-based fear to the point that a mere "aversion" to homosexuality now warrants the label.

CONCLUSION

It seems clear the terms themselves are plain examples of demagoguery. However, it's also clear they're here to stay. For purposes of moderation ...

  • If the term is used in a generic sense based on its current dictionary definition, we'll probably allow it.

  • If it is used in a manner that either directly or by insinuation is clearly designed to insult a person or people group, we will not allow that.

Simply put, "Rule 1" of r/TrueChristian still applies in this space, which is to treat others with respect. The fact that a term is dictionary-defined doesn't change how it's being used. For example, the word "moron" originally had a clinical psychological use for people with an IQ between 51 and 70. Yet I give 99.99% odds that even if you're factually accurate in your use, it's also intended as an insult. So, if you call someone on this sub a "moron," we're going to step in and take action on that. Same principle applies.

I don't want to contribute to misinformation, so I should explain the Ukrainian hit on the Yandex data center in Russia may or may not actually be impacting Russia's constant campaign of screwing with social media in other countries.

But if you're not offline because you have access to the internet, maybe there's a chance you're a red-blooded American or a Christian who cares. If you are, let us know!

Not a bot.

Columbus’ Writings Reveal How Faith And Conquest Were Intertwined

Columbus’ Writings Reveal How Faith And Conquest Were Intertwined

Like a magpie on a spiritual quest, Columbus transcribed portions from the Bible and scholars into a kind of commonplace book — a journal where he recorded parts of scripture and other writings, including his own notes. He intended the book for his queen and king, though it is likely they never saw it.

...

Columbus told a powerful tale in its pages. He believed that God had endowed him with remarkable intelligence, despite enemies’ allegations that he was “an uneducated man, an uninformed sailor, an ordinary person.”

Columbus compared his struggles with those of biblical prophets, saying he was like Isaiah, who “was not just a prophet, but also an evangelist” who called “all people to our holy Catholic faith.” He wrote about the discovery of islands and converting “all peoples and nations.” He reported that the Roman historian Seneca had prophesied that “a large landmass” would appear during “the last years of the world,” adding that a “new sailor” would “discover a new world.”

In this book, which was not published in his lifetime, Columbus recast the renaming and charting of Caribbean islands as a religious pursuit. He used Scripture to try to understand its geography, specifically seeking the Mount Zion mentioned in the Bible. He believed he had uncovered the Caribbean’s secrets because he had divine support for his task. The explorer wanted his royal patrons to see his role in history as something foretold by the ancients.

"President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel amidst Putin’s ongoing and brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine makes no sense and is a betrayal of the legacy and leadership of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. While Ukraine fights for its survival, Putin’s war machine continues to prosecute his terrorist war on civilian populations and innocent Ukrainians are dying every day. Now, Instead of implementing the tough sanctions Lindsey Graham fought to his last breath to enact, President Trump has announced the United States is lifting sanctions on Russian energy, fueling the Putin’s war machine. As I saw firsthand in Ukraine last month, Putin is losing this war. Ukraine has fought the Russian military to a standstill and reinvented warfare with drones taking the fight into the heart of Russia. America should not be throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine. Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression as we did during the first Trump administration..."

Alaska, the Last Frontier of untrammeled wilderness and old school petty political shenanigans

Since this is a sub that occasionally discusses politics

Incumbent Alaska senator Dan Sullivan is currently in a fight for his political life despite the state's heavy Republican lean (+13 for Trump in 2026). Mr. Sullivan faces headwinds not only from the tough national environment, but has also drawn an extremely strong challenger in Democrat Mary Peltola, who has already once defied Alaska's partisan bias to serve as their sole member of the House of Representatives from 2022-2025. Further compounding the GOP nominee's problems is that, thanks to Alaska's top-four, non-partisan jungle primary system (where all candidates compete in a combined primary and the top four candidates advance regardless of party affiliation), Dan Sullivan additionally has to fend off two lesser known challengers including one... Dan Sullivan.

We should at this point carefully distinguish between incumbent Republican senator Dan S. Sullivan, and unaffiliated candidate Dan J. Sullivan, Jr.

And if you know anything about Dan J. Sullivan, Jr., know that Dan J. Sullivan, Jr. gets very offended if you suggest, as many Dan S. Sullivan supporters have alleged, that Dan J. Sullivan Jr. is in the contest merely to siphon off votes from unwary supporters of the much better known Dan S. Sullivan. Indeed, Dan J. Sullivan, Jr. takes pains to insist that his candidacy is indeed very serious, pointing to the fact that he received nearly three percent of the vote in the primary.

...

Let's now move on to the House race for Alaska's lone seat. Here, the two front-runners are Nick Begich, who ousted Mrs. Peltola in 2024, and independent Bill Hill, who has coyly declined to answer who he would caucus with. However, rather notably, Alaskan Democrats have largely cleared the field in favor of Mr. Hill.

Let's take a moment to appreciate this amazing pattern that has been repeated throughout many other red states. Democrats, realizing just how toxic their brand is, are fleeing headlong from races deep in Republican territory and are instead backing independent candidates who may be able to escape the Democratic stink- Dan Osborn in Nebraska has the best chance, but there are also much more longshot candidates in Idaho and South Dakota. This has invoked a scad of hilarious lawsuits where Republicans angrily insist that the Democratic candidate must be on the ballot, while the Democrat vociferously insists that no, please take me off. In contrast there's Montana, where the Democratic candidate stubbornly refused to clear out of the race despite the urging of her own party's leadership.

Anyways, back to Alaska. Unfortunately for Mr. Hill's candidacy, there was one Montana-esque Democratic candidate who didn't get the memo and remained on the ballot- one Eric Hafner. However, unlike what went down in Montana, as far as anyone can tell Mr. Hafner has absolutely no ties to Alaska. Remarkably, Mr. Hafner has also not spent a single second on the campaign trail. This fact will make a bit more sense once I inform you that Mr. Hafner is currently incarcerated in New York state, which begs question of how exactly Mr. Hafner got on the ballot in Alaska in the first place. So just like in the Senate race but in reverse, Democrats are furiously alleging Republican chicanery. Indeed, Alaskan Democrats are taking the remarkable step of educating their voters not to vote for the sham candidate on the ballot with the D next to their name.

So dear readers, which is the worse/funnier underhanded political tactic? Duelling Dual Dans, or the New York Manchurian Candidate?

In closing, I will note that Alaska has wisely implemented ranked choice voting, which diminishes but does not completely eliminate the possibility of a spoiler candidate.

There are 31 days until the midterms.

Livestream the execution of a mass shooter

Aside from the issue of death penalty, there is a lot of talk about live-streaming Fort Hood shooter’s execution by firing squad.
I find this utterly disgusting that the powers that be suggested and approved of this! What is wrong with them?
I appreciate that VP Vance said he will not be watching it. But my issue is it shouldn’t even be an option!
This is so wrong! Humans killing humans is bad for us, and I see a lot of Christians using OT scripture to justify this.
I am also seeing many people talking about him in very inhumane ways and talking about how they are going to celebrate this.
As a Christian, I can not understand ANYONE wanting to see someone else be killed by others, and then turn around and celebrate this.
If they do this, they are going to open doors of evil they will not be able to reverse. I hope this gets shut down.

“The capabilities of today’s frontier systems do much more than imitate or automate discrete aspects of human intelligence.  They increasingly amplify human ingenuity and unlock new forms of creativity, empowering Americans to achieve what was previously impossible across science, medicine, and nearly every other domain of human endeavor.  As these capabilities continue to improve, they increasingly represent not merely artificial intelligence, but a new era of Super Intelligence.”
