i've noticed a couple of things, from direct experience, with people who get clean/sober. it's not everyone, but there's a subset of people in recovery whose primary instinct is to turn this achievement into a hyperindividualist pivot into some kind of self started leadership play.

i know two people directly, who have done really well getting clean, staying up, and turned that into an extremely isolated path, as in, no instinct to get involved in the process that helped them out in a, for lack of better word, "worker" capacity. one has rolled sobriety, indigeneity and his role as a father into a play to start a nonprofit food cart rental scheme for marginalized chefs. the other has been organizing pickup hockey games through benchapp making profit off per game fees and now as at least three app based "addiction expert" and (unqualified) therapist consultant plays on the go.

i've struggled with drink and drugs and have lots of friends who have too. most of my actual friends have either got straight in the regular course of life, or have done it and then moved into harm reduction, food programs, nonprofit work with existing projects. i'm encountering more of these sorts of people though who don't seem to see themselves as part of a supportive community bettering each other, but as "success stories" who now have something unique to offer (for a price).

having never worked the steps myself, i'm sort of curious if anyone has any insight into why some people end up this way? there were threads here recently about predatory behaviour in NA/AA and the sort of autonomous nature of groups. and of course addiction is a selfish disease that comes with that built-in alienation that perfectly complements entrepreneurship. does the nature of recovery not deal with that? just remove the substance part without changing the underlying social/historical/material nature of addiction?
