miscellaneous [Funny Trope] Clear nods to a character the actor previously played.

- In the early 2000s Scooby-Doo movies, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy the Vampire Slayer, played Daphne, and as such is made to be a lot more of a fighter part as a subversion of Daphne's role as a damsel in distress but also as a nod to Buffy.

- In Fate/Grand Order, the character of Kriemhild is played by Aoi Koga, who lately had played Kaguya Shinomiya in Kaguya-sama: Love is War, and as such during the Valentine's Day event, where the Servants give something for the protagonist, Kriemhild's segment is instead a Kaguya-sama skit with her panicking wanting to make something for Siegfried while the protagonist plays the role of Hayasaka.

Super recent example, in Invincible theres Agent Spider which is an obvious nod to Spider-Man and he is also voiced by Josh Keaton who voiced Spider-Man

His dialogue in Invincible Vs with Omni Man who is played by JK Simmons who is also J Jonah Jameson is this

"You're a criminal, a vigilante, a public menace."

"Nolan. You are a mass murderer."

I mean in the comic it literally is Spider-Man, it was a crossover. They replaced him with Agent Spider for copyright reasons in the show.

145

u/StormyBlueLotus 10h ago

The greatest part of that sequence with Mark going through the multiverse is when he's on a rooftop talking to a dark caped figure and says: "No, I mean you're a man who dresses like a bat, and your name is… Well, I mean, like, don't you think that's kinda lazy?"

50

u/isuckhips 7h ago

He also said the same thing about Spider-Man, which is hypocritical on Robert Kirkman's part. He has mfs like Monster Girl, Immortal, and freaking Robot. Like bro, look at yourself first.

11

u/KuryoTheDemonLord 4h ago

To be fair, he also had Spider-Man immediately tell Invincible that he was being stupid and didn't have a leg to stand on with a name like Invincible. He's aware that he's no better and that's part of the joke.

This goes harder as Agent Spider was Spider-Man in the original story. Agent Spider is an OC to take his spot since Amazon and Marvel didn't come to a deal to use an animated Superman in their show.

(Five Nights At Freddy's 2023)

William Afton does the Ghostface knife wipe while fighting Mike, since Matthew Lillard was one of the killers in the first Scream movie.

Also, Lillard said that it was just instinctual and not intended to be a reference.

36

u/King_of_Knowhere 10h ago

They easily could have saved the movie if Stu had just came back for real. They could have kept the whole movie the same and just revealed post credit that one of "Stu's" messages were real not deep faked and that he's been a hidden puppet master since 4. Would have at least set up something interesting for down the road.

I'd also point out them getting Skeet Ulrich to play Henry in the second one feels like it too. As Henry is meant to be the partner of Afton, and since Skeet and Mathew were Billy and Stu in scream it feels like a great little reference.

I love that Castle has multiple Firefly references throughout the series. For example, Beckett asking Castle where he learned to speak Mandarin, and he responds, "TV show I used to like."

Sonic singing about the movie Snow Dogs being the worst in the second Sonic film.

It’s a fun reference to his voice actor Ben Schwartz and his previous role as Jean Ralphio in Parks & Recreation, where he does the same exact line delivery and hand gesture about his sister being the worst.

They had actually started to ramp up her athletic abilities before that. In Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase they showed her using martial arts during the Japanese level of the game but that came out only a year before the live action film so I'm sure they already knew who was playing Daphne when they were working on it.

Solid Snake doesn't like Sonic the Hedgehog.

In Smash Bros Brawl, you can hear codec conversations about every character in Smash Bros Brawl, and Snake express clear rejection to Sonic despite Otacon trying to defend him. Snake doesn't elaborate or give more reasons that "there's something odd with him" and "i just don't like him".

That's because the japanese voice actor for Snake is Akio Ōtsuka, the real life son of Chikao Ōtsuka, who voiced Dr. Eggman in the japanese version of the Sonic Adventure games.

Men Who Stare At Goats - wacky movie, but the premise is George Clooney is part of a secret government program trying to harness psychic powers (but really mostly just doing LSD) and Ewan McGregor plays a reporter who starts uncovering this. There's an exchange along the lines of "We called ourselves Jedi Knights, do you know what that is?" and it cuts to Ewan McGregor deadpan and he says something like "I've heard of them"

And if you’re reading this and you’ve never seen Men Who Stare At Goats, go watch it now. A star studded cast, absolutely hilarious, and the opening tag line of “More of this is true than you would believe” is shockingly accurate.

This interaction between T-1000 and Peacemaker in Mortal Kombat 1:

The reason Peacemaker says this is because T-1000 is based on Robert Patrick's performance of said character, both through voice and model, and Robert Patrick plays Auggie Smith (Peacemaker's dad) in the show.

68

u/Nerus46 9h ago

Oh, there is also one in MK11

When Shao Khan, who looks like a brutal barbarian king, faces T-800 he asks "What is the best in life?" T-800 answers "To crush the enemies and see them driven before you"

40

u/Accomplished-Big-740 9h ago

Good catch! There's actually a similar one in MK1:

There's an interaction where T-1000 tells Conan The Barbarian he looks like the T-800. This is because both Conan and T-800 are played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. (in their source material at least)

Quantum Ranger- Battle for the Grid.

Daniel Southworth reprises his role as the Quantum ranger from when he played him in the early 2000's. Between then and the release of Battle for the Grid, Dan's most prominent role became Vergil from Devil May Cry. So when Battle for the Grid added the Quantum Ranger, his first line is saying "Foolishness Lord Zed", mirroring Vergil saying "Foolishness Dante". He also says "I need more quantum power" and Vergil says "I need more power" before the final fight in DMC 3 but I think that one is more of a coincidence since at least the Foolishness one was said in a similar cadence to Vergil.

It’s still uncertain whether this was intentional or not, but there’s actually a case where an actor’s role in a film actually FORESHADOWS a character they play in another show later on.

As in, before he got cast as the next Doctor in Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi acted as a Doctor in World War Z, and is literally credited as “W.H.O. Doctor”

Even if it is just a massive cosmic coincidence, it’s still my favorite bit of actor trivia.

As a reference to that role, they cast Frank Welker (most known for playing Fred Jones in Scooby-Doo, also Megatron) in the role of Emperor Argall (right), who gets killed by Thaedus.

Tokusatsu does this a lot since many toku actors stay in the business but a recent example is Kousei Amano, known for playing Tachibana from Kamen Rider Blade, returning to Kamen Rider Zeztz as Sieg. The last episode of Blade ends with a shot of a bench which is notorious in the fandom for how heartwrenching the scene is and Kousei Amano recreates that with his new character

Ray Park plays the villainous mutant Toad in X-Men. During the final fight scene he kicks a bar of scrap metal into the air and spins it like a staff before ending in a dramatic guard post.

Park previously played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I...who is most famous for wielding a two-ended lightsaber in which he used the same moves.

In Excel Saga, there is a scene where the main character, Excel, fights some bad guys in America by quoting Sailor Moon's speech, "In the name of the Moon, I will punish you!" This was funny on its own since Excel Saga is supposed to be a brutal takedown and parody of anime in general (at the time) but also because the voice actress who plays Excel was also the the same person who voiced Sailor Moon.

Nathan Fillion does this quite a bit in Castle. There are at least two nods to Firefly in it. One when he straight up wears Mal's costume for Halloween, and a subtler one when he's wearing blue gloves and does the 2 by 2 gesture in reference to the Blue Sun group.

There are probably more that I'm forgetting.

N (Murder Drones) is wearing Purple Rabbit ears, a nod to Jax (The Amazing Digital Circus) who are both played by Michael Kovach

Another FGO example from the same chapter with Don Quixote and Sancho, one is an aggressive fighter with his NP being a charge to impale his enemy that damages him too while Sancho is his ever-faithful female companion who will tend to him after said attack

The nod is to Zeta Gundam since Nobuo Tobita and Arai Satomi voice the protagonist Kamille Bidan and his childhood friend love interest Fa Yuiry respectively. In the finale of said series Kamille impales the main villain with the nose of the plane mode of his Gundam in an attack known as Waverider Charge and also ends up mindbroken with Fa having to take care of him

In Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Mike Myers plays a record label executive who says the label wants

...the kind of song teenagers can crank up the volume in the car and bang their heads to. Bohemian Rhapsody can never be that song.

This is a nod for the audience to Myer's famous scene in Wayne's World (1992).

15

u/scavengercat 7h ago

Not just for the famous scene - Myers said he wouldn't do Wayne's World without Rhapsody. They were going to use a Guns n' Roses song. At the time, Queen was not particularly relevant, but Myers' fight to include the song made their catalog sales soar and boosted their popularity off the charts. He is considered to be the reason they had a second resurgence, so this is a massive thank you to Mike.

He described the irony of this scene as like "a snake eating its own tail".
