Dr Manhattan is always a bit intimidating. Why would he bother wearing clothes when he’s watching subatomic interactions and seeing the future
One correction, Dr. Manhattan can't actually "see the future" as we think of it in a Paul Atreides or Dr. Strange using the Time Stone type of way, what Dr. Manhattan experiences is all of Time all at once as it appears from that moment, but because Free Will exists and he's only perceiving probabilistic events the details can change so he can still be surprised.
Though I would actually argue that this is also a better description of how Dune Prescience and likely the Time Stone realistically work, too.
It's also relevant that while free will exists, Dr. Manhattan has, for his entire life, had all of his major life choices made for him, by other people.
Ozymandias manipulated him into going into exile, but before that, every romantic partnership, his career and education, every meaningful event in his life was chosen for him by someone else. It isn't until the very end of the story that he actually make a choice all on his own.
The great thing about Doctor Manhattan is that he doesn’t get rid of his costume all at once; it goes from being full length to a sort of one-piece bathing suit to shorts to a thong to the full Monty.
she's especially good bc it's the first real titan you get a good look at. it was a nice way of making the audience get just how dreadful and terrifying these things are to the people in universe
honestly you can say what you will about aot, but the pilot episode was probably one of the best i've ever seen it sets the mood for the rest of the show perfectly, especially for when titans start showing up again
especially the death of eren's mom, i like how initially she's just trying to get her kids to safety, but her last words show how she really, selfishly, just doesn't want to be alone. she knew they needed to live and she was beyond saving but she just still wanted someone to be by her side
made it really sad to see even on a rewatch
then finding out that titan's actual identity and it kinda makes sense if i found my husband after alll that time and he married and had a kid with the first barista he met i'd honestly kill her too 🥀🥀🥀
remember the half-formed gigantic titan that had to drag himself to his destination and when he finally showed his front it was all worn off from the friction? horrifying.
Both things are true. It was DEFINITELY a show of power that created a moment of awe. And imo, it absolutely counts. A woman just casually walks out of a fire without even a singe? I'm noping right outta there.
GRRM’s A Dance with Dragons is the reason I’m now fluent in English.
I mean, I learned some English in school, but when the book was first released in Germany, they decided to translate the names into German… after having published all the previous books using the original English names.
So the German edition of the new book actually had a 20 pages index listing all the names they had butchered by translating them. 😂
That was the moment I decided: Fuck this. I’m reading and watching everything in English from now on.
Probably one of the best language-learning decisions I ever made. If he ever finishes Winds of Winter I'm gonna use it to learn Polish.
What jumped to my mind was Brienne when she was in the bathhouse with Jamie. I don't remember what exactly he said, but she got so mad that she didn't care about covering herself anymore.
Also, I may look like you, but my lack of anxiousness over nudity reveals I'm actually so alien/different in psychology that you can't rely on any familiar sense of humanity or morality to guide how I'm about to treat you.
Basically, "I'm not following the same "rules." You gonna get fucked up.
idk what it is but there's something about a stoic march that just isn't as scary as a bloodthirsty feral rage.
kinda like... the elves army from LotR, definitely scary and imposing, and the organization is intimidating... but now imagine a horde of World War Z zombies... goes from an "oh fuck" level of petrifying, to a full on wordless panic
Or the opposite effect where I think "This idiot's not even wearing armor. I can strike him anywhere and win, this'll be easy" and now he's got me right where he wants me
The terror of something like a berserker is the fact that if someone wants to hit you with a weapon to the detriment of their own safety it is extremely difficult to prevent them from hitting you. Any jackass with an axe charging at you in the nude has no fear of being killed in the process of trying to maim you, and make no mistake unless you're exceptionally skilled and decently lucky they will successfully maim you even if you kill them in the process.
I generally interpret it as a sign of "no more pretense of civility". The carnage that is to come will be savage, merciless, and primal.
I can also sometimes see it as "leveling the playing field". No armor, weapons, or gadgets, just whatever the gods saw fit to give the combatants at birth. It also means that when the fight is over the winner has proved that on a fundamental level they are better than the loser.
Samurai Jack (from Samurai Jack) Throughout the series, Jack dresses down on several occasions. Its played as stoic and practical. Even as a kid watching the show, it felt like things were getting serious whenever this would happen. Jack never adds dialogue when he changes, never gets embarrassed or even hesitates, it's always done with intent and again, whenever things would get serious
The pain and despair I felt when I looked up season 2 of Kaos coming off the high of completing season 1. I genuinely cant in good conscious recommend the show to anyone cause I don’t want them to go through all that knowing there will never be a payoff
For real! There was something about Kaos that was so unique and brutal and compelling, and by the end, emotionally moving, and id just grown attached to the characters and the plot coming together. And then it hit me like a slap in the face the abrupt cancelation. That one will always sting
In the 2007 movie, Beowulf fights Grendel unarmed and naked because Grendel fights unarmed and naked. It’s a combination of Beowulf’s code of honor, and as a way to show to the Danes that Beowulf is him. (Note: in the original poem, Beowulf fights Grendel unarmed, but distinctly not naked)
Polybius describes the Gaesatae, Celtic mercenaries who fought in the Battle of Telamon, as the following:
The Insubres and Boii wore their trousers and light cloaks, but the Gaesatae had discarded these garments owing to their proud confidence in themselves, and stood naked, with nothing but their arms, in front of the whole army, thinking that thus they would be more efficient, as some of the ground was overgrown with brambles which would catch in their clothes and impede the use of their weapons.
Pictured: the Dying Gaul sculpture, possibly dating to the 200s BC.
I can't help but feel if you're worried about brambles catching on your clothes, naked is actually going to make things a lot worse in a different way.
Trying to explain this to my wife as she watches me haul ass across Caelid running from a guy with just a Reduvia and otherwise naked after watching me stomp multiple bosses was like trying to explain quantum mechanics to an ant.
"In this game any player can enter another's world full of giant toys with the only goal - to kill him. And if the toys were made with thought that player eventually will beat them by his skill and experience, other player will not be so fair: he will get all possible upgrades and equipment to stand higher than his prey only because of the quality of his armor and sword..
THEN, HOW EXPERIENCED AND SKILLED MUST BE A GUY WHO WILLINGLY ENTERS MY WORLD WITHOUT ANY ARMOR AND WITH ONLY A KNIFE IN HIS HAND?!" - that is similar to how I explained it in text to my friend after similar moment.
Bunch of lairy Celts nuding up, getting a bit of ríastrad going and being so angry that the Romans spend a couple hundred years making up stories about how mental they are.
(Arcane) Ambessa used this in a meeting with jayce. He came in thinking he was going to play hard ball and she had him avoiding eye contact and then basically doing exactly what she wanted by the end.
Claymore is absolutely full of nonsexualized nudity and I love it. For another example of this trope (of many), I'll put forward Riful of the West specifically.
She deliberately takes off her clothes if she has the chance before fighting, purely because they'd be destroyed otherwise. For those unaware of her scale, she's about the size of a two-story house in this picture, but her human form looks like a regular teenager.
There's just something about the casualness of preserving her clothes because she's so strong she doesn't need to hurry.
I love the unspoken idea that this only works because Verso was a child when he created the painting, so he was still in a mindset where a strong man could achieve literally anything.
The fact that they have a diegetic explanation for the absurdity makes it so much better.
The fact that most, if not all of them, are pushing 60 just adds another layer to the absurdity. Has got to be to be up there with expedition 69 and 70 as the GOATS.
I was a peak horny teenager when I first watched that movie, and even I found that scene far more awe-inspiring than titillating. Kusanagi is so damn cool.
Also in Elden Ring, as well as other Souls titles, there’s an unwritten rule that if you come across a player wearing nothing, they’re going to either whoop your ass in PVP, or effortlessly solo the boss you’ve been stuck on for the last week.
The most famous example is the legendary Let Me Solo Her, who became famous for placing his summoning sign outside of Malenia’s boss arena. He only wears a jar on his head.
In a world where 80% of humans have superpowers, Mirio Togata/ Lemillion has the power to phase his body through anything. It was an incredibly difficult ability for him to master. When first demonstrating his powers to his underclassmen, his clothes fall off due to the nature of his powers. Everyone is initially weirded out by his nudity until he proceeds to beat the shit out of every single one of them.

Not sure if im allowed to show his whole body considering it is as long as my leg and swinging about
They wear some clothes, but ultimately don’t care about what they look like. They’re divine beings, and any human that sees them in any way ultimately doesn’t matter to the Tensen, because Humans are below Tensen. (Also because they’re probably gonna kill the humans)
This is usually male nudity, but fear and hunger is full of this trope. Sometimes it’s purely a case of “this person is savage or nuts”, sometimes it’s “the corruption is effecting EVERYTHING”, and sometimes it’s “do NOT lose here or your body is getting fucked up even if you live” but in all cases it’s intimidation and horror focused, not erotic.
Supposedly Celtic warriors in IRL history fought wearing only woad (a body paint) and a type of choker necklace. Though there is some suspicion this was not done entirely for intimidation as it was because clothing could have trapped more filth in wounds and it was an attempt to mitigate infection when they would not have likely had armor decent enough to stop an attack entirely except for a shield. (And in fairness, shields work pretty damn well)
That one YouTube short film where the guy looks through his rifle scope and sees a naked dude screaming and wandering in field, but when his digital watch accidentally makes noise, the scream suddenly stops and the next time he looks through the scope the naked man is suddenly bounding toward him on all fours.
