u/Bronze_Granum May 07 '26
I think what makes this so interesting is that the moon is just sort of like a corpse. A body still moving/acting off of an idea of what it is supposed to do, but unthinking. Just a small trace of a god that left a long time ago
57
u/TheGuyfromRiften May 08 '26
actual rher was also a real asshole to humans too
→ More replies (1)33
u/Bronze_Granum May 08 '26
Oh, absolutely, but by the time of Termina, the moon is just a tiny trace. Rher is long gone
40
u/PuppetWraith17 May 08 '26
I do love that if this trace is acting off "instinct" or whatever, that it's main goal is to just drive people mad. What a guy... moon?

u/fightingbronze May 08 '26
Personally I have this theory that even his disappearance is another of the trickster moon gods tricks. Rher hates the idea of humans ascending to be true gods, and his actions in the first game, while subtle, all reflect that. Here too, allowing perkele to use the terminus festival at his pleasure could be a long con plan to try and stop the ascension of Logic.

As a game and as a story (Elton John), Dead Space 3 was completely mid all around.
As a continuation of the lore and the overarching plot of the series, it absolutely elevated the franchise to a ridiculous new height.

I'm a firm believer in the theory that Visceral, just prior to EA shutting them down, made the DLC for DS3 end in such a way that the story was outright over and so that EA couldn't puppet another company into continuing the series.
The Brethren Moons finding Earth is quite a thing to work around for a sequel.
77
u/inferxan May 07 '26
Believe in a interview some of the devs did state a concept for dead space 4. In which you play Ellie going from shipwreck/outposts and such to gather fuel, scrap and survivors to keep your own ship going, while finding out the origin of the brethren moon and how to stop them.
They did hint/state that sometimes finding out and knowing might not be the outcome you wished it would be.
56
u/TheGeckoWrangler May 07 '26
Yeh, weren’t they originally planning to have the Brethren Moon be defeated, only for it to be revealed that their presence was keeping an even more dangerous entity in line?

Man, Hive Magic is one of my favorite things to talk about to the uninitiated, and I’m near-delirious with a fever, so I’m gonna do just that. If someone reading is curious about how a magic alien death cult works, I’ll explain.
Basically, Destiny’s “magic system” consists mostly of two-to-three parts, that I need to explain before the space wizards. The first part is willpower, the supplanting of reality with what you choose it to be. But willpower doesn’t work alone. You can’t just wish something was the case, and have it be. You need the special sauce: Paracausality. The fundamental forces of nature, which can be split into two categories: the Light and the Darkness.
The Light is the domain of the physical. Constant, untamed chaos, the rushing of electrons of Arc, the Solar heat of the stars, and the crushing gravity displacement of Void. The Darkness is the domain of the mental. Instead of just creation, it shapes the creation into a fine, destructive knife, with the cold unfeeling control of Stasis, forcing the cessation of movement on an atomic level, and the collective unconscious of Strands that bind all living things together.
Now back to the Hive, originally a race called the Krill, they made a pact with what they thought were the voices in the Deep to save themselves from extinction, and in each of them was placed a Worm. A parasite (symbiote?) that feeds on the host’s violence, and gives them the ability to tap into the Paracausal, as well as an overwhelming bloodlust. Because of their connection to the Darkness (or in the Hive’s words, “the Deep”), the Worms essentially create a psychic web for the Hive that basically makes it so that, if enough of them believe something, it will happen. Because of this, their society is structured in the form of numerous master/minion relationships. The Thralls and Knights and Ogres kill to gain power, and give their belief or “Tithes” to Wizards, which use that belief to shape reality, and the Wizards, in turn give their Tithes to greater Wizards (or sometimes even Knights and Ogres), and so on and so forth all the way up to the Hive Gods. This act of besting another, and taking their power for your own is referred to as the Sword Logic.
Now, back to the Wizards, they have entire groups of Hive Tithing to them, giving them power on the forms of rituals and runes and songs. To the Hive, there’s no distinction between a word and the meaning of the word, whenever the words are invoked, what is said will come to pass. They chant of gaining strength from their Tithes, and so they become stronger. They etch words of corruption on stones around an abandoned moon base, and it becomes corrupted. They weave your very being into their songs of death, and so you die.
And then, it being Destiny, you find a way to encapsulate that song in the bones of the Wizards that sang to you, and turn it into a Rocket Launcher.

To be nitpicky, Erebus, who you fight at the end of The Answer/Episode: Aigis, is the one that actually is the representation of humanity's desire for death. The Moon is Nyx's body, who is an eldritch being that represents death itself. They're related but not the same.

Remind me what makes Oedon so stong? All I know is it (she?) is formless, but how does that equal power?
118
u/ThatKaleidoscope3388 May 07 '26
Oedon is generally represented as a masculine presence, so he or it. Regardless, unlike the other great ones, Oedon has transcended to a level beyond the great ones we see. He's like the DnD Ao of Bloodborne kinda. He's at the point where he starts to represent part of the fabric of reality rather than existing within it.
44
u/notnotDIO May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26
He is also one of the only great ones to have children that aren't surrogates, Mergo and (I think) Arianna's baby.
→ More replies (2)46
u/alphafire616 May 07 '26
So basically Oedon is omnipresent. He (Hes rhe only specifically Male Great one. Ebretias, Kos rhe moon presence and Rom are female and the rest arent specified) Exists everywhere and interacts with the world through blood. If i remember correctly he is the source of the Healing churches blood and as such in some ways he exists within and is worshipped by EVERY Yharnamite. In Bloodborne power will always lead to transcendence as shown bt the hunter changing form in the true ending so it stands to reason that since Oedon transcended even the need for a physical form hes the most powerful
30
u/Robdd123 May 07 '26
Ebrietas is the source of the Church's holy blood; the Tomb Prospectors of Byrgenwerth found the Isz Challice which granted them audience with her access to her blood. The description even states this challice became the cornerstone of the Choir and the Church was basically a front for the Choir to conduct their experiments. Presumably moving the challice below the Grand Cathedral is why Ebrietas shows up down there.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)19
u/corpserella May 07 '26
I don't think so. Oedon exists only as a voice and has tried and failed multiple times to bring a child of blood into the world. The entire Cainhurst clan was wiped out, and they are strongly implied to be unknowing servants of Oedon. I'm not aware of anything that points to Oedon being on a power level beyond the Moon Presence, for instance.
28
u/alphafire616 May 07 '26
Oedon failing to have a kid is not a comment on his power though. Every Great one fails to have a child.
→ More replies (9)13

u/Robdd123 May 07 '26 edited May 08 '26
Oedon is the formless Great One and thus he exists on an even higher plane than the rest of the Great Ones who all must take some physical form. He's presumably the only male in the pantheon of Great Ones (or at least is the only one that's implied to be male) and is responsible for many of the pregnancies we encounter in the game. Fake Iosfeka and Arianna are both impregnated by him as they're good vessels for a child; Queen Yharnam years ago as well.
28
u/aromanticairhead May 07 '26
It’s also important to note that Rom, an individual that ascended to become kin of the great ones, is the only thing holding the moon presence and the other great ones back. Killing her allows them to begin infesting reality more directly, especially Oedon
→ More replies (1)32
u/Robdd123 May 07 '26
She's not holding them back as much as she's obscuring their presence from the residents of Yharnam. Case in point, the Amygdala hanging off the side of Oedon's Chapel is still present before killing Rom and having 60+ Insight allows you to see them anyway.

In the 1990s Beast Wars cartoon, the transformers crash land on a prehistoric earth, though at the time they might not be entirely certain that's where they are. The world at that time has two moons, one of which is actually the Planet Buster, a contingency plan that other aliens using Earth as a science experiment set up to destroy the planet if things went wrong. And sure enough, due to the interference of the warring factions, things went wrong.

The background for this is hilarious and genius. The writer's were waiting for approval from (I think) Hasbro as to whether they could set the show on Earth. As the response came so late into the writing process, one of the writers figured they'll just give the planet 2 moons, and if it turns out they can set it on Earth, they'll blow one of them up.

It's actually by Nissa and Tamiyo, Sorin was busy having to gnaw himself out of a giant rock cylinder Nahiri put him in.
Yes, it is implied he had to use either his fangs or his own blood as magic fuel to get himself out.
Also Tamiyo was being mind-controlled by said Eldritch Space Jellyfish to use the scroll that was supposed to kill everyone on the planet to power the spell that would put the ESJ into the moon. Why didn't the scroll kill everyone on the planet? Oh, that would be because the ESJ projected into Jace the telepath's brain as an angel when he tried to fix Nissa's brain which was going crazy after grabbing a leyline that had got jacked up by the ESJ, somehow produced said scroll inside his head, edited said scroll to function as an uber-battery instead of killing everyone, and somehow had those edits sync across to the real thing.
Yeah, Eldritch Moon was a wild ride.

(IRL myth) Blood moon specifically, is this fella from Maori stories, Whiro.

God of sickness, disease, ex death-God, and God of general evil things.
Lizard are his servants, is why Maori feared them.
The normal moon is also a cunt in Maori mythology, straight up kidnapped a women for eternal imprisonment just because she sweared at him a bit.
(Whiro is the lizard/screaming face thing, the women between the legs is a different deity)

He used to be the God of death, but another Goddess (and first human to be born) Hine-Nui-te-Po, took his job as death God. And its a good thing she did, my understanding is that under Whiro the afterlife was like this, place of forever suffering. Or at least it just really sucked having Whiro as the death God.

Final Fantasy VIII takes place on an unnamed Earth-like fantasy Planet but the moon of the Planet has all the craters and such to evoke the Earth's real moon.
The moon isn't alive or sentient but it IS the original home of the many horrifying monsters that populate the Planet. Every so often, the Lunar Cry happens, and thousands and thousands of monsters literally fall from the moon to the Planet,

Final Fantasy likes doing creative evil-adjacent stuff with the moon. It doesn't always, and even when it does, it's never the same as the last time, but using the moon as a harbinger of doom or connecting it to the villain in some way is a recurring thing in the series.
In Final Fantasy IV, the moon is actually another planet. A dead planet, whose people have been mostly wiped out. The main villain and his second-in-commans are from there, and the protagonist turns out to also be from the moon, but his parents pulled a Superman and sent him away to save him. Not from a calamity, but from the villain.
In Final Fantasy IX, Gaia has two moons, but one of them is actually the moon of another planet transposed on Gaia's spacetime, and the last living people of that other planet have been slowly terraforming Gaia to be more like it for the last few millennia, which is the source of the mist that covers the Mist Continent, and that mist creates monsters and also drives people insane and makes them crave war, and eventually kills them if they breathe enough of it. The mist itself also happens to be the souls of the dead, being artificially prevented from naturally moving to the next stage of the life/death/rebirth cycle, so that the people of that other planet can replace the souls of Gaia's lifeforms with their own.
In Final Fantasy XIV, one of the moons is a prison for Bahamut, and he eventually breaks free and destroys the entire world (which is the in-universe explanation for why the original version of the game was shut down and rebuilt from the ground up as FFXIV: A Realm Reborn), because he's not a nice dragon in this one.

In Destiny, while the moon itself isn’t evil, the entire thing has been infested with the Hive who are pretty damn evil.

minor gripe, but how can it be analog horror, when the whole thing is digital

u/Life-Excitement4928 May 08 '26
Technically speaking, most of what we consider analog (tapes and such) are digital as well; they’re just less advanced forms of digital.
10
u/abadstrategy May 08 '26
okay...better question. Analog horror is supposed to draw appeal from the artifacts of their medium. Static, aliasing, noise, blocking, scan lines; all of these make what you're looking at feel authentic and analog. another key thing is that while postprocessing is obviously a thing, analog horror is supposed to be just that, analog, not reliant on 3d rendering for every single element. None of that is present in Mr. Friend's videos

Does it count as analogue horror? I watched it and felt it didn't really feel like an analogue horror. Found footage at best imo and even then it uses character POVs a lot from what I remember

I think the term “analog horror” has been so watered down that people use it to refer to any indie horror project on the internet lol

I remember in one of the DND 3.5e books, Elder Evils, they included a campaign ending creature called Atropal. Atropus was an eldritch moon that slowly approaches your planet, making necromancy and resurrection spells more potent. Your players would have to go to the moon and kill his avatar, destroying the moon and saving your world. It was crazy.

The End, Sonic Frontiers. Supposedly it's not a moon but a form perceived by the player.
"Mortal, you have served your purpose. Now face your End. I am the all-consuming void. What can one mote of golden light illuminate within the abyss? Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me, all brought to nothing. All the teeming chaos of creation? Brought to order. To neutrality. To nothing. I saw your mind as you ran through my prison. You have fought machines and gods. They were mighty? They were finite. I am infinite. I am nothing. You struggle as so many have done before. You will be consumed like all those before you. I saw your mind. Your courage never wavered. Why? Arrogance? Ignorance? Stupidity? I was contained once. Once. Is that why? My captors bent time and space. My captors built a whole reality, to contain me. My captors burnt their souls away to fuel their engines. And you? You glitter. You fly about me like a gnat. I am inevitable. I cannot be denied. You strike this incarnation with all your might. It changes nothing. You are not brave. you are not victorious. No matter what form I take... The End comes for you all!"

u/Nassuman May 07 '26
The End taking the form of the Moon is some interesting fridge logic when you consider that most of his most dangerous adventures involved the Moon or a moon-like structure, so when Sonic thinks of death, the first thing he imagines is the moon.

Brunested the Crimson Moon from Tsukihime

It's an eldritch god like entity that is the moon itself, who sent down an avatar containing it's soul to create the original Vampires, the "True Ancestors" to give Earth a valid defense system, cause Earth just tangled with an alien and it's main defense force, the Gods, were all killed. Eventually, it also sucked the blood of humans, creating "Dead Apostles", who while having a similar existence to True Ancestors were also capable of acting on their own will beyond that. After that he kinda went around killing any strong opponent he could find so he could take over the earth.
Crimson Moon eventually had a fight with a weird old man named Zelretch, and nearly crushed the earth by creating a mirror image of itself to slam into the earth, only for the dude to pull some bullshit by drawing power from infinite universes to create a laser beam that pushed the moon back and thus killed Crimson Moon.

The moon from Don't Starve Together. It's referred to as "Them", the Moon is essentially a sleeping Eldridge God that uses the power of Lunacy from moon magic to horribly mutate animals, bosses and plants. A little fact to add is that one of the playable characters in the game, Wormwood, is a sentient plant given life by a magic moon crystal that fell from the sky

In the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh Yugi's Giant Soldier of Stone is trapped on a tiny but of land and surrounded by sea monster infested water because of the Mystical Moon magic card he played earlier. By destroying the moon the tide washed away trapping the monsters on land allowing for Yugi to take the win.

Dalamud from Final Fantasy XIV (1.0, but prominently referenced in ARR)
A lesser red moon of the world Hydaelyn, the plot of 1.0 centered around the Garlean Empire's 7th Legion working on a project to use it as an orbital weapon. Those involved in the project fell to fanatical madness, with the 7th Legion's commander Nael van Darnus in particular becoming obsessed with bringing Dalamud down from the sky.
This is because Dalamud is a "that's no moon". It is, in reality, an ancient prison for an elder primal (a false god created by faith), designed not only to contain it, but also to sustain it through the faith of imprisoned dragons while the ancient empire that created it could draw power from it. Exposure to Dalamud allowed the elder primal within, Bahamut, to twist mortals to its will.

In the Elder Scrolls franchise, the moons might be the torn-up corpse of an evil trickster god. Depending on who you ask. And by that, I mostly mean “according to the high elves.”

In Zoneless Zone Zero the world has been mostly taken over by "Hollows," highly dangerous reality warping areas that corrupt all life and even machines. If you look up at night you'll see that the moon has a massive Hollow on it. We don't know much yet about the origins of Hollows though. My theory is some kind of meteor collided with the moon sending a chunk to Earth carrying the catalyst for the Hollows.
In any case Hollows are bad and the Moon seems to be half of one

It’s heavily implied in Elden Ring that the moon and other celestial bodies are sentient evil gods.

u/flying_fox86 May 07 '26
I can somewhat see the idea of the moon being an outer god, but why evil?

It's an interpretation (that i disagree with) based on Ranni's words in her ending having a sinister tone. From what i understand that's actually something that was slightly lost in translation, she was more so implying that she was creating a world order without godly interference in mortal lives, something that ties into her antagonism towards the Fingers and the backpath nature of her questline, which has a very "walking off the path of fate" vibe

I wouldn't call them /evil/ exactly. Sure the Fallingstar Beasts are big hostile bugs but I wouldn't call a scorpion evil.
I do think the moon(s?) though are largely benevolent, inasmuch as we can tell if it(they?) even has(have?) a motivation. Each Carian Princess witnessed their own moon, and the moon they sighted served as a source of inspiration and a source of their own unique magic as well. And in Ranni's order under the Dark Moon, no outer gods are allowed influence in the world, letting mankind determine their own fate for the first time without outside influence.

Not sure if this counts but dalamud, final fantasy 14

The giant artificial moon housing the elder primal bahamut, which was eventually destroyed when the garlean empire brought it to crash down upon eorzea, freeing bahamut in the process which was the event that destroyed the original game and led to it's reboot as a realm reborn (the above image being a screenshot of shortly before this happened)
honorable mention also from final fantasy 14
The real moon: Final fantasy 14 endwalker spoilers it also houses an elder primal, that being zodiark. Albeit a little less evil since it's also literally a giant space ship built to carry humanity across the stars if needed
