On one hand, you’re right.
On the other: what could possibly shock you about a school for teenagers with extreme mutant powers that is also a major superhero headquarters, the direct enemy of all forces of evil in time and space, especially Magneto.
So again, this house, a training ground for extreme mutant powers, in open warfare with flying robots, enemy mutants, and time travelling cyborgs with super weapons: would this seem like a mild insurance risk compared to a regular mansion?

Sunnydale, California (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
A small cali town with disturbingly cheap housing costs, sits on top of a Hellmouth that draws vampires, demons, and other dark forces
By the series finale, the final battle in death causes the entire city to collapse into a crater. Every citizen basically did an exodus out a few episodes before just feeling something was off

Man Destiny and Destiny 2 are so fucking stupid. Literally not letting new players experience the whole story because it straight up can't be played anymore.
155
u/Turnbob73 Jan 04 '26
I’m always confused by this since I played Destiny 2 back when it released. Does that mean the game doesn’t even start with the attack on the tower/city anymore? Do you just get dropped into the farm at game start or something?
209
u/JNAB0212 Jan 04 '26
Destiny 2’s opening is just a modified version of Destiny 1’s opening then there’s a short story thing afterwards.
The entire base story of D2 is gone now, there’s just no story anymore

u/Atsilv_Uwasv Jan 04 '26
Who the fuck thought that was a good idea? Sure, it could get people on with FOMO, but what about after that? That just absolutely kills how long a game is relevant because why would I play a game that I technically can't even play anymore?
→ More replies (6)92
u/Epsilon_Final_Mix Jan 04 '26
If i remember correctly, It's not so much about FOMO as it is that D2's engine was such an example of a house of popsicle sticks on a foundation of ice cream (in Texas, in the summer) that it made Helldivers 2's engine look stable, combined with the game managing to somehow have even more tech debt than the Total War: Warhammer trilogy, that caused them to have to take that stuff out to prevent the game from getting too big.
Not too big for our hard drives, even, but literally to big for the game to function.
Cause technology is a fuck.

u/McHenry Jan 04 '26
Wait... so the first Destiny's code was so wildly poorly optimized that a bunch of stories were written about it and how miserable the team was when it came to having to push out updates and Destiny 2 just kept up with the same thing? Shit. I've loved what I've played of both, but never got into the Destiny 2 community so much as I just played around where I could. I always just assumed there would be some way for me to get back to the story, I just wasn't doing things right. How many hours did I waste on that game?

Honestly Bad Batch was fantastic. Ending was a bit lack luster but also not the worst.
Dr. Hemlock is a fantastically menacing character plus I love how foreboding they made Project Necromancer.
Like… thanks to Rise of Skywalker (or rather Fortnight) we all know WHAT it was but seeing Dr Hemlock walk into a room, tell everyone what he wants and then tell the he was going to get it because his project was even more important than the DEATHSTAR?!
Oh that was good!
18
u/archonmage2006 Jan 04 '26
Yeah, I rewatched it recently and TBB was surprisingly well done. All the villains and antagonists are genuinely threatening and I'm really happy that they didn't walk back Tech's death (Honestly one of my favourite examples of character deaths in media).
I actually liked the ending enough, the only thing I have a real issue with is Scorch being done so incredibly dirty.

I guess not exactly within the scope of this trope as it’s written here, but: Carl watching his and Ellie’s house float away.
His refusal to give up the house and his wish to fulfill the promise he made to his late wife Ellie that they would go to Paradise Falls kickstarted this whole adventure. But after saving Russel, Doug and Kevin from Carl Muntz, he watches his house float away into the clouds, having lost too many balloons during their fight to be able to fly anymore.
Carl letting go of the house also symbolizes him letting go of Ellie, and he goes on to embrace his new life and adventures with Russel, with joy that he never had before.
We find out in the end that the house actually wasn’t destroyed, but it landed near Paradise Falls, still fulfilling his promise to Ellie

Tristram in Diablo II.
In Diablo I, it was the only safe haven for our character, and we would not know its fate by the end because the ending cinematic in Diablo 1 shows our hero becoming the next vessel.
In Diablo II, it was confirmed that all of the heroes had fallen and become corrupted, and the village was overrun by demons, with the only survivor being Deckard Cain.

Villa Auditore in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.
You spend a majority of the 2nd game building up from scraps, putting thousands of florins into restoring it only for it to get complete destroyed during a siege in the opening hour of the next game. Its a super effective way to reset Ezio back to nothing and really motivate the player into wanting to kill Cesare.

The final battle when Spinel launches the attack and Beach City starts to get destroyed. After 100-something episodes where even the smallest side character gets some sort of development, this city feels completely lived in. Like they're our own neighbors.
So watching it get destroyed and watching all the people in Steven's circle going around saving as many of the townies as possible was really emotional 😭

Titans Tower in Season 4 of Teen Titans (2003) after Trigon arrives on Earth. Yeah, it got fixed immediately after they defeated him, but seeing the planet fully covered in lava, seeing the Tower used as a mere throne, with Raven gone for good, and knowing that there would be no help for them because they are basically the only 4 people still alive, really sold me the stakes the whole team was against. I knew they would win somehow, but I even thought even if for just a fraction that ‘it’s truly over, isn’t it?’

Critical Role/Legend of Vox Machina. The city Taldo'rei, home base for the protagonists, is obliterated by a group of dragons, the Chroma Conclave, led by Thordak the Cinder King, who happens to be the same dragon that destroyed the home village of Vax and Vex when they were children, killing their mother in the process. The cast comments out of character about the destruction. It's such a great episode.
Final Fantasy IX, the city of Alexandria is destroyed by...also a dragon, Bahamut, who was stolen from the mind of Princess Garnet and summoned by Kuja against the city. In the same game, we also lose the city of Lindblum to Atmos but imo the first example hits harder. It's the city you start the game in, Garnet's home city. Poeticly tragic in such a beautiful way.
