Rigby2D: A Free, Open-Source 2D Skeletal Animation Editor
Hi everyone!
I’m a technical artist working in the games industry, and I’ve been developing Rigby2D, a free, open-source alternative to Spine 2D for character rigging and animation.
With the rising cost of professional animation software, I wanted to contribute something accessible to the animation community.
Current features include:
> Skeletal rigging, mesh editing, and weight painting
> IK, transform, path, and physics constraints
> Keyframe animation, dopesheet, and graph editor
> Skins, events, and mesh deformation
> PSD and PNG importing
> JSON, binary SKEL, and texture atlas import/export
> Built-in JavaScript animation runtime and WebGL renderer
🤖 Meet Rigbytron!
Rigbytron is Rigby2D’s robot mascot, fully rigged and animated using the editor itself. It’s included as a demo project, allowing anyone to explore the rig, bones, constraints, and animations firsthand.
Even Rigby2D’s animated splash screen is powered by its own animation runtime.
Rigby2D is currently in early alpha (v0.1.0), so it’s not intended to replace a complete animation production suite like Toon Boom Harmony.
The project is open-source under MIT / Apache 2.0, and Windows installers are available.

I’d appreciate feedback from Toon Boom artists, particularly those working with cutout animation and character rigs.
Thanks for checking it out!
