Megathread Frequently Asked Questions Thread [READ BEFORE POSTING]

If you've got a question, read this FAQ post before asking it. If it's a common question, it'll likely be on here, which will reduce spam and save you time. Do not encourage piracy of any sort.

(if you do not end up finding your question here, search the subreddit in case it's already been asked. please.)

Have the Light Novels ended yet?

No. They are currently on Volume 9 and releasing.

How many official English volumes of the LNs are there?

As of January 2022, there have been releases of licensed translations of the LNs until Volume 7. Volume 8 is scheduled to release on April 19th, 2022. (Expect a delay.)

Is there a manga?

Yes. There's the ongoing Mimimi spinoff Minami Nanami Wants to Shine.

There's also a serialized manga adaptation of the light novels, which ended with six volumes in April 2021.

Why are the manga so short?

Because the serialized manga adapts the LNs. The Light Novels are the official source material. Manga chapters were published slowly and aren't caught up to the LNs. The manga serialization also ended April 22, 2021.

As for the spinoff, it only began publication in December 2020.

Is there an official translation of either manga?

Yes. Both manga are now licensed. The spinoff is set to release March 22, 2022. As for the serialization, it's not out yet. And we don't know when it will be.

Where can I legally buy the LNs/Manga?

[JP] Official LN Website

[JP] Official Manga Website

[EN] Official Translated LN Website

An expanded selection can be found on the Tomozaki Discord.

Where can I get them for free?

Do not encourage piracy of any sort.

Google is also a resource that exists.

Where can I watch the anime?

Funimation

Who does Tomozaki end up with?

The Light Novels haven't ended yet, but as of now, Kikuchi & Tomozaki are in a relationship.

How many volumes did Season 1 cover?

It covered three volumes. Episodes 1-4 covered Volume 1, Episodes 5-8 covered Volume 2, and Episodes 9-12 covered Volume 3.

Where should I go after finishing the anime?

While the adaptation was fine for the most part (until Volume 3), the widely-held philosophy is to start from Volume 1 regardless. The Light Novels tell the story differently. It's an experience that varies from the anime, and one most of us prefer. However, if you wish to skip already-adapted content, I'd recommend starting from Volume 3 at the latest. Episodes 9-12 skipped a lot of content from Volume 3 for pacing reasons.

When do episodes come out?

They air live in Japan at 21:00 JST on Fridays, so expect Funimation to have it a couple hours afterward.

Will there be a Season 2?

We do not know yet. Edit: We are getting a continuation project! Details to come.

What are the OPs/EDs?

OP 1 - DIALOGUE+ - Jinsei Easy? (人生イージー?)

ED 1 - DIALOGUE+ - Ayafuwa Asterisk (あやふわアスタリスク)

Who is the best girl?

Participate in democracy. Vote in the weekly best girl poll, released on Fridays. Voting runs from approx. 11AM PT on Fridays till 11AM PT on Thursdays. You can find all of them, current and past, here. (These concluded with the end of the anime.)

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Volume 12.

The spoilers for volume 12 just came out, and what I read honestly made me feel ashamed. I’m genuinely embarrassed for the author, who has proven himself to be completely incompetent. I have no intention of ever reading anything written by this person again.

Nothing actually happens in the story — zero. And the “answer” is exactly the non‑answer I expected. Truly one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever read. At least based on the spoilers that have surfaced, the other characters basically disappeared like magic.

Light Novel Discussion 12th volume overview. Spoiler

fuka try to get the writing idea by talking to mizusawa and mimimi.

she keep writing until she hit the aoi part.

she realized aoi can not accept her story concept(aoi's character told her).because it would be the same as her mother did to her.forcing her to accept the reality by some ''story''.

then she went to the island for getting andy's unfinished hidden volume.

tomozaki also went there when fuka can't write anything.

then a lot of things happened(stuff like ''you should pay attention to any tiny thing, you as a writer should not only focus on your own intention.'')

fuka realized the story should be ''realistic''.

then aoi read the story while condemning the content was too arrogant for her then she found the same sentence she just condemned.told by aoi's character.

then nagisa(aoi's dead sister) also as a character came up in the story.fuka wrote the possible sentence nagisa might say when seeing her sister apologizing to her.

then tomozaki came by,said the same theory in the book and adding a detail.

''absolute correctness is not that perfect.just like the planet orbit.it have two focus.in the another focus, there was nothing originallly(lost her sister that always insist on the correctness).then you had already been absolute right.''

then describing aoi and tomozaki fight in the game as usual at the school event.

finished.

Light Novel Discussion -2 for the end. What was the shark‑jump moment for you?”

Post image
45 Upvotes

For those who don’t know, this term is used to describe the moment when a story becomes irrecoverable — at least subjectively. Setting aside the romance, which is awful just like every relationship in the series, I’d like to know what the narrative “jump‑the‑shark” moment was for you, and if you think there wasn’t one, why you believe that.

As for me, I’ve never hidden it: my breaking point was the entirety of volume 5, especially the ending. That’s when I realized the story had sunk completely, because from that moment on I couldn’t take anything seriously anymore. And the worst part is that the series demands seriousness, especially considering what happens in volume 11.

Light Novel Discussion The 1st Volume of Tomozaki-kun is Wierd

I'm finally getting around to reading "Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki" after watching the second season of the anime in 2024. I just started and finished the first volume today (shout out to the official ENG translator for this volume, Winifred Bird!).

After reading the 7th volume of SNAFU back when I was in high school, I came to realize I kind hate that specific kind of "coming-of-age" stories that tell you mind-numbingly obvious messages, but I'm really happy to say this series is somewhat different from that: this is just a kid that is genuine to himself and others from the get-go. He's just under the impression that things are defined in life and can't be changed (despite not putting any real effort in to improving it). Even though that's just as obvious as SNAFU's themes, I like the progression/gamification of getting to know what that exactly means for Tomozaki and his eventual difference in values with Hinami, and I look forward to catching up to where the second season ended and getting to the fabled volume 12 end.

With all of that being said, Yuki Yaku is such a weird author, man.

On one hand, this guy is really good at writing believable, thought-provoking, and sometimes hilarious high-school dialogue (I'm not even gonna include the unironic, frequent usage of "gamer" 😆 ) throughout this book alone:

Tomozaki: "I guess so. This [pasta] is delicious, by the way. That is kind of strange."
Hinami: "Why do you think you can tell them apart? ... Here's the answer."
[Hinami] pointed to her mouth. No way.
"... Pasta?"
"Idiot."
Yeah, that was dumb. Sorry.
- Vol. 1, Page 48 (ENG)

Then on the other hand, the descriptions of his character appearances are so underdeveloped and sometimes just wrong??

"Um, that's Fuka Kikuchi-san, right?
I could give a quick, generic description like "artsy type with fair skin and short black (??) hair," but that wouldn't do her justice."
- Vol. 1, Page 62

"Now I had to talk to Minami Nanami... She's a classic Japanese beauty -- pale skin, long black (???) hair, and even, defined features."
- Vol. 1, Page 65

I can only guess that Tomozaki is "ugly" because that is his perception of himself, because we never actually read a single defined body trait, other than that Hinami tells him he has an average build. But is that really all the physical details we'll be getting from them. You don't even know what Tomozaki himself (not his choice of clothes) look like until you see Fly's illustration on Page 103. The author does a really good job of giving defining temperaments, tones, and speaking styles for all of the girls, but that's not helping me create a good image of what they are actually supposed to look like. Fly is really doing heavy lifting with their illustrations, because if I hadn't watched the anime or even looked at their illustrations, I could not tell you an actual detail about any of them.

Don't even get me started with the tired LN author trope of having to point out that girls have female bodies 🙄. Yuzu Izumi has a mole on the corner of her mouth and has brown, wavy hair, but none of that is told in the book!?? Instead, we just get the following snippet:

"She's like a model cool girl. The kind of girl rumored to flirt with all the boys. She's got big big boobs, too. She's nice and tidy and cute, which makes her less intimidating..."
- Vol 1, Page 60
"Still, I could sense how bright and cheery she was just from the perky way she turned toward me. The little gap between her buttons gave me a glimpse of her boobs. The buttons were under stress from her large chest... In other words, her top was so tight I couldn't help picturing the curvature of her boobs. They were huge."
- Vol 1, Page 61

Don't even get me started on how the main character's little sister was introduced, because wtf. I know this is just par-for-the-course of LNs set in high school, but still!! It doesn't help that his entire afterword is quite literally dedicated towards Fly's illustration of Hinami's THIGHS on the cover. This guy needs to be stopped!! (xD)

What do you guys think, though? I honestly don't know if I've become the old man yelling at clouds, or does his ability to write detailed character descriptions actually improve as the series go on?

Volume 12 il piu grande problema: fumiya tomozaki

Post image
43 Upvotes

As we know, volume 12 will be the last one, so we can already draw conclusions about our protagonist — and I’m sorry to say it, but we don’t even need to read the final volume to state that this character has been completely ruined. At this point, he’s just a terrible character, one of the worst protagonists in the history of light novels. And he’s that bad precisely because he once had the highest human potential of all.

In the end, what we’re left with is a character who is victim‑minded, hypocritical, shallow, idealistic, morally inconsistent, and childish. You can feel it especially in his internal monologues in the light novel, and in his fantasy‑filter worldview — which apparently everyone has forgotten about, including the author himself. He even forgot about Fuka’s hair, because if you look at the two illustrations that were released, tell me if the first one looks anything like Fuka. She’s supposed to have black hair, but whatever.

We’re talking about a protagonist who never truly impacted anyone’s life in a meaningful way. If anything, he only created problems through manipulation — like during the sports festival, or during the period when he had to choose between Fuka and Minami. And that part is laughable, because he deliberately created typical rom‑com situations without either girl knowing, meaning he never had to face the consequences of his actions. He’s so incompetent that he’s now relying on someone else to solve the Hinami situation — and even there, there’s a lot to unpack.

Apparently even the author is mocking him at this point, considering he doesn’t even appear on the covers anymore. So Fumiya, I’m sorry, but I’ll address you directly: you really could have been the number one protagonist, but unfortunately you were conceived by a completely incompetent writer, and you ended up looking pathetic as a character.

P.S. And I’ll repeat it: nothing he does in volume 12 matters, because all of this remains. It doesn’t magically disappear. The only ending I consider acceptable is one where Fumiya and Aoi emotionally isolate themselves from the group in a bittersweet conclusion, and where Fuka — as a necessary sacrifice to resolve everything — gives up on him. Otherwise what are we doing? She gets everything, sings her own praises, and sacrifices nothing? To me, that’s the only card left to make this character even remotely likable to anyone who isn’t wearing blinders — but that’s another discussion.

Goodbye, Fumiya. I’m sorry for the fate you ended up with (metaphorically, of course).

Anime Discussion Tomozaki kun:The possible true meaning of the series and how it should be interpreted.

Post image
58 Upvotes

When I first saw the cover, the very first thing I felt was discomfort.

It seemed completely out of context, and it immediately raised a lot of questions — especially: why are certain characters missing? And above all: why is Fumiya missing too? After thinking about it with a clear mind, I tried stepping outside the usual narrative interpretation.

I tried looking at it symbolically instead.

And once I did that, not only the cover but the entire story looked completely different.

Here’s a summary of why.

Theology: The Cover That Changes Everything

If we look at Tomozaki-kun in a linear, realistic way, the series is a narrative disaster: static characters, superficial dynamics, surreal interactions, no real consequences, and a protagonist whose “growth” feels artificial and full of contradictions. But if we read the series symbolically, everything shifts. What seemed incoherent becomes intentional. What seemed shallow becomes allegorical.

  1. The final cover isn’t a drawing — it’s a theological painting

When I first saw the cover, I felt a strange discomfort. It didn’t look like a typical light novel illustration. It looked like an oil painting, the kind you’d find in a museum, depicting religious or Christological scenes.

Even the kanji on the cover (“God”, “purity”, “blood”) reinforce the idea that this is not a normal illustration — it’s a symbolic, implicitly religious composition.

  1. The series must be read as “narrative theology”

In this framework, Tomozaki-kun is not meant to be realistic. It’s a symbolic parable, where events don’t need rational or linear explanations.Everything exists to represent concepts, not to build a coherent plot.

  1. The characters in the painting represent religious archetypes

Each character embodies a symbolic role:

Minami → The CommunionShe is emotional, naïve, and never questions Aoi.She avoids conflict and accepts whatever “truth” is presented to her.The chalice she holds is a classic symbol of communion — accepting the new sacred truth.

Mizusawa → The WitnessHe has always observed Aoi as if she were a divine figure. Now he observes Fuka, the new prophet. He represents the rational witness who validates the shift in truth.

Yuzu → The ChorusA background figure who reacts emotionally rather than intellectually. She symbolizes the community that receives the revelation without analyzing it.

Fuka → The Prophet / The New DeityDressed in red — the color of sacrifice.Through her writing, she spreads the new truth. She replaces Aoi as the “divine” figure of the sacred plane.4. Why Minami, Mizusawa, and Yuzu are built for Fuka’s new truth

These characters were never designed to withstand Aoi’s harsh, perfectionist truth.

Minami is emotionally driven and conflict-avoidant → perfect for a soft, narrative truth.

Mizusawa is analytical and detached → ideal as a witness, not a follower of Aoi.

Yuzu seeks harmony and stability → she fits the communal, gentle truth of Fuka.

They are not “empty” characters — they are constructed for the sacred plane, not the human one.

  1. Fuka’s sacrifice: giving up Fumiya

If Fuka becomes the new prophet, she cannot remain on the same plane as Fumiya. Her ascension to the sacred plane breaks the stasis between Fumiya and Aoi.

This is why:

Fumiya does not appear on the cover

Fuka and Fumiya are never shown together

Fumiya belongs to the human plane, not the sacred one

Her “sacrifice” is symbolically giving up Fumiya.

  1. Aoi: the fallen deity

Aoi appears, but outside the sacred painting. She reads Fuka’s writing — the new truth.Symbolically, she is the deity who has fallen and ceded her place.

She is no longer the guide. She is the one who observes the revelation from the outside.

  1. The absent characters (Nakamura, Takei, Tama)

They were never part of Aoi’s doctrine. Each follows a different “disciple”:

Nakamura → Yuzu

Tama → Minami

Takei → Mizusawa

They belong to the social plane, not the sacred one.

  1. The author’s words confirm the theory

The author explicitly said:

“I will close the story of Fumiya and Aoi.”

Not Fuka and Fumiya.

This means:

the central theme is the fall and the revelation

Fuka’s story does not end here

the sacred plane continues

the human plane closes its arc

  1. The ending: not romantic, but symbolic

I don’t think Fumiya and Aoi will become a couple explicitly.More likely, the ending will hint at a future connection.

The important part is not romance — it’s closing the thematic arc.

  1. The characters in the painting are the ones the author may write about later

Fuka, Minami, Mizusawa, and Yuzu represent the new world after the revelation. They are the ones with potential for future side stories.

Conclusion

The final cover is not promotional art.It is a theological painting that closes the parable of Aoi and Fumiya and opens the sacred plane of Fuka.

Even though I’ve built this theory, I want to be clear: my opinion of the series hasn’t changed.I still think it’s a poorly written story. And honestly, if this symbolic interpretation turned out to be true, it would make the series even more irritating to me — because everything feels exaggerated, overly complex, and pretentious.

But at the same time… this interpretation explains everything.

It explains why everything felt artificial — the dynamics, the relationships, the lack of consequences, the absence of real conflict.Simply because the story isn’t meant to be realistic. It’s meant to be symbolic.

Obviously, we’ll only know once the final volume is released.

But I admit:if things really do go in this direction, I’ll feel some fascination for the concept.Because when you look at it symbolically, that cover becomes chilling — in a good way.

The first thing to say is that the art style is genuinely beautiful — I really like it. But the characters are completely unrecognizable; it doesn’t even look like Tomozaki-kun. Especially in the first illustration, I struggled to understand that it was Fuka. Still, as I said, the drawings themselves are great.

That said, let’s move on to the negative points, which — at least for me — only confirm the disaster this finale is going to be.

  1. Fumiya is nowhere to be seen, and honestly that alone is enough. You’re telling me that in the final cover, the protagonist isn’t included? Not even on the back cover? You know, the character whose name is literally in the title and the one we’re supposed to empathize with? He gets discarded by the author himself — which tells you everything about how well he was written.Nakamura, Takei, and Tama are also missing. For Nakamura and Takei I have nothing to say: it just confirms that they’re completely useless as characters, and all the sections involving Nakamura were a total waste of time. But Tama? That’s unjustifiable. She’s the only genuinely positive character, and she’s not included?

  2. Aoi is no longer treated as a character — she’s treated as a problem to be solved. The cover focuses on Fuka, even though the narrative focus should be on Aoi and her issues. And even when Aoi appears, she’s shown reading Fuka’s novel.

  3. Am I the only one who finds the second cover out of place and unsettling? It doesn’t even look like Tomozaki-kun — it feels like something completely different. And on top of that, it seems to reference religion. If I’m not mistaken, the kanji on the sides refer to purity and God.So how did we end up talking about religion now? Are they seriously trying to convince me that the “answer” will be a mix of Fuka’s novel and religious symbolism? That’s insane. This author wasn’t even able to write grounded, believable themes, and now he’s throwing in supposed Christ-like references? At this point I’m expecting him to romanticize the death of Aoi’s sister and call it a day.

I told you guys 15 days ago that Volume 12 was going to be the final volume

Now that it's actually confirmed, I'm genuinely disappointed.

I've been following Tomozaki for 7 years, and I really hoped the story would have more time to develop. It's not that I wanted it to continue forever, but ending it like this feels way too soon considering how much still feels unresolved.

And personally, I want Hinami.

I've wanted Aoi from the beginning, and I know not everyone wants the same ending. That's fine. But after following this story for so many years, I really hope her character and everything between her and Tomozaki isn't reduced to simply “Tomozaki helps her, she changes, and they remain friends.”

I don't want a safe or flat ending for Hinami either. I want her to actually make meaningful choices for herself, and I want the relationship between her and Tomozaki to actually go somewhere.

I really hope Volume 12 proves me wrong about my fears.
