To be clear, he isn’t allowed to attend the wedding. He’s getting ready to stand in the parking lot outside the temple with all the other “unworthy” people. It doesn’t matter if the couple getting married is his family, he is not allowed into the temple to witness the wedding.
Absolutely NOTHING in the LDS church is “up to the couple”. Clearly you were not married in the LDS church, I’m glad you haven’t experienced being in this cult, I have. Your LDS wedding is about the church, not you. They would be publicly shamed for having a civil wedding outside of the temple and could lose their callings over it. It would be an embarrassment to their families and a statement that they do not value god over their selfish desires to include “unworthy people”. I would bet you $10,000 he’s going to stand in a temple parking lot and there is no civil ceremony outside that.
I "went" to a LDS wedding for my friend and it was this. Her Dad wasn't even allowed to go inside to see the ceremony because he wasn't LDS. And it was like a factory situation. Evey fifteen minutes a different couple would come out for photos by a reflecting pond and then move as the next couple came. Like an assembly line
Talk to some other ex-mos… there’s entire subreddits just about us and the reality of being in that cult. My experience is not unique or uncommon, its standard issue LDS programming.
Dude, you can think whatever you want, but if you never knew anything outside the US I don’t think you have any grounds, because things in this country are freaking weird.
