I am in the middle of Gideon the Ninth... and I already caught enormous amount of spoilers to the next two books while trying to understand what's going on. I think part of the reason is English is my second language and some of the vocabulary is over my head, so I Google fan art to imagine the Canaan house insides better 😭😂 But okay, that's not the matter of this post.

Everyone is talking about tons of meme references etc, but I am an old 28 yo lesbian from Eastern Europe who lives under the rock, guys. So far I recognised "While you were busy [whatever], I was studying the blade" because I do fencing. That's about it. I do feel like a lot of references are to the type of media I rarely come in contact with. Do you think it influences the ehh experience from the book? Is there a reference guide for underrockers?

Does this have any relevance to the series? No. The only connection I can even make is the extremely longshot that a nonius is a measuring mark and our boy Matthias is the cavalier against whom all the others are measured. Which is a bit of a stretch, even for Muir. But there you go.

I’m loving the series so far, I’m currently reading Nona. Reading Gideon the 9th had me locked in, fun book! The lyctor elites and god were a nice power creep. My difficulty so far is that there’s a section in each book where keeping track of who is who, who’s in who, and who the fuck is this? Is that intentional? I’ve had to backtrack on several chapters sometimes because I get so confused. I usually just end up paddling through until things make a bit more sense. Am I just bad at reading? Is it a metaphor? Has anyone else had trouble keeping track?

Recently designed this Locked Tomb bookmark and finally got it listed on my Etsy shop here. I've had a lot of people admire it at recent events where I sell my work, but literally only one person has recognized what it's from 😭At least I know you folks will appreciate it, haha.

The babysitter we had on Monday night was the coworker whose love for the Locked Tomb prompted my rereads, so I was driven to get more of the houses done for her benefit.

I just spray-painted the petals of a fake rose silver for the Seventh, and I found something that might serve for the scrolls of the Sixth… getting all eight done this year is in play!

The skulls are sitting on a bit of pallet that I painted black, drilled holes in, and stuck bistro lights through.

They're my poor little meow meows(said with disdain and world weariness).....

What is the message? Life long question that only Alecto with answer. Personally, I think it will be the lyrics to Never Gonna Give You Up, or Tamsyn being cruel and its just "You Lost The Game" (Very sorry if you still play The Game)

I’m midway through the first book. Griddle and her necromancer are coming to terms with the criticality of trust in their relationship. I’m open to correction, but this is a thriller, is it not? Escalating plot, protagonist must face down internal issues causing conflict—the unknown still lurks before Nav and Harrow. Mid-book plot disruption when Magnus et al are murdered. Seems like a thriller all mashed up with horror and fantasy, maybe?

Sorry about the title, I wasn’t quite sure about the rules and didn’t want to spoil anyone who had only read GtN but my question is: Why does Gideon the First keep trying to kill Harrow?

To the best of my knowledge, that only time it is directly addressed is when it’s said that he is that he’s duty bound to keep an oath to protect Jod, an oath that was made a long time ago and can’t be broken. I feel like the reader is meant to vaguely interpret that as ‘Harrow is a distraction to Jod because of her weakness of being half a Lyctor, and that will lead to Jod dying during the fight against the Resurrection Beast’. But that seems a bit… vague? The other Lyctors were far more of a direct threat, especially given they actually do end up trying to kill Jod.

Gideon also knows almost nothing about Harrow and tries to kill her basically on sight, so his reasons must boil down to either something he can sense or see. The only relevant things I can think of are:

• The first time he kills her, he tells Mercy to pass him her longsword. It’s possible it’s something to do with the sword.

• He knows she is of the Ninth. Maybe it’s something to do with Anastasia? As she ‘failed’ the Lyctoral process, maybe she made him swear not to let any of her bloodline go through the same thing she did, and therefore he sees it as his duty to kill Harrow.

• He has weird powers and is a thanergetic void, so maybe he can sense something about Harrow that makes her inherently dangerous. It could be something about how she was created. As his duty is to hunt out Resurrection Beasts, maybe Harrow’s signature is similar and therefore he tries to kill her.

I have read Nona, but only once and I don’t remember it addressing this. It is entirely possible it was explained in NtN or HtN and I missed it so apologies if so!

Rereading Gideon the Ninth and I’m wondering where is our best assessment of who got what keys at Canaan House. I admit my scan of this sub was cursory - can anyone point me the right way? And/or drop your wild theories? 🗝️

I still can't work out exactly how this exchange would have been germane to a discussion about Dios Apate Minor. Anyone have theories?

The next two houses up are the Eighth (pending my finding silver cloth for the blindfold) and the Ninth.

The Sixth and Seventh are trickier because of the scrolls and the rose, respectively, but I’ll figure it out. I have the Second figured out, I just have to make, shape, and paint the face guard.

Had some fun making this cosplay. Bone corset and jewelery is made of aluminum foil and foam clay. I sewed the cloak and veil and painted patterns on the stole with nailpolish.
