Season Four Finished the show for the first time šŸ˜©ā¤ļø

…and I wish I could rewatch it again for the first time for a few Jeremy Bearimys.

I went in totally blind, the max I knew was a random ethical consumption under capitalism meme and that it starred Kristen Bell (Frozen’s Anna) and Jameela Jamil (I mean who doesn’t know her) and I was blown away by the depth of research on the show! I’m also a reader, not that into hardcore philosophy but I love philosophical fiction, so when I realised what the premise of the show was I was excited and it just kept getting better and better! From Aristotelian philosophy to Sartre’s Existentialism? ARE YOU KIDDING ME! And all this in such an approachable and funny manner! I loved the ending as well. Ugh now I’m sad and content at the same time. This is definitely getting up on my top 5 shows of all time (atleast for now).

Shirtpost Is doing good for a reward actually good?

Post image
812 Upvotes

This one conversation is something I have been coming back to since I watched the show, how is morality actually judged, not only in the show but irl too..

Let’s say someone works at a meat shop to support their family. They’re doing something good by providing for their family, but their job also involves killing animals. If killing animals is morally wrong, how do we judge them? Do their intentions matter more than their actions, or vice versa?

This brings me to my main question now that I’m an atheist, and I’ve always wondered about the morality behind religious beliefs.

Most religions teach similar basic principles: don’t lie, don’t hurt others, help those in need, don’t be selfish, and so on. I believe these principles are important for society, regardless of religion.

But what if someone follows these principles because they believe good deeds will bring them good karma, prosperity, or a better afterlife? If someone donates to charity because they want to get into heaven, is that genuinely good, or is it just selfishness disguised as generosity?

Obviously, someone can genuinely care about others while also hoping for a reward. But if the reward is their primary motivation, does that change the moral value of their actions?

Sooo…
If the outcome is good but the intention is selfish, how much moral value does the action actually have? Does doing good for a reward make you a good person, or does it simply make you someone who does good things?

I’ve only ever watched the show and rewatched it on live tv and Netflix, so now that I’m rewatching it on peacock I’m having trouble knowing what’s been added or slightly changed on peacock.

So does anyone know what the extra three minutes are from in this episode?

Was Michael ever truly bad?

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

So I'm on my umpteenth rewatch when I have this epiphany. Before I start, this theory is a bit of a stretch and it's possible several of these things are because he didn't want them to find out it was the bad place. Either way, I think this is an interesting take and I'd like to hear other opinions!

Have you ever wondered if maybe Michael wanted the humans to become better all along? Or even just not enjoy torturing them to begin with? Because he genuinely liked them! Obviously we know that he at least believed that he enjoyed watching the humans suffer but let's look at a few things. If Michael didn't want the cockroaches to get better, why did he constantly bid them to confront the parts of themselves that caused them to go to the bad place? For example, In season 1 when Tahani is "unraveled" by the Neighborhood ratings, he asks her WHY that is. Causing her to reflect on the root cause of her behavior, and throughout the entire project they all eventually see their faults, almost as if by design. Michael himself even acknowledges this to an extent when he decides to join team Cockroach, telling Tahani that the reason she doesn't see why she's in the bad place is because she'd only been in that specific reboot for about a week. We already know that Michael LOVES Human stuff, at first I thought it was a bit for the sake of the experiment but as it turns out he did genuinely love it. Then, we have the fact that this was literally Michael's first neighborhood, and instead of doing traditional torture he creates an almost utopian environment where they are very comfortable. Yes they're being "tortured" but let's be honest, living in the fake good place would be much better than living in the real bad place. Through Michael's experiment, if it had gone as intended, they would have been able to build friendships and do fun stuff together for eternity. The mild discomfort caused by merely existing in the world together would have just been enough to keep them from becoming glassy eyed freaks, not make them miserable. And lastly, Michael has never openly stated that he ever actually enjoyed traditional torture. In fact, he speaks badly about it most of the time, calling it easy, boring, and even a "chore". The last word there really hits the nail on the head. Obviously he's a demon, he was literally raised to torture, so no duh he's desensitized to it, but a chore is something that no kid wants to do. It's like torture!! (Lol) I believe that even if Michael did not realize it until later on, he didn't truly enjoy seeing the humans miserable.

Sorry it was long😬 can't wait to hear your thoughts!!

It took me a second trying to place her. It doesn't help that she doesn't have an Australian accent. Anyway I recently finished Desperate Housewives (I watched it as it aired but just recently rewatched. It's fantastic by the way!) and moved on to this as a recommended show.

I'm still ashamed it took me a minute considering TGP is my favorite show of all time and I have watched it countless times. Like so many times I can quote most of if. Most of those are because it was my sleep comfort show. I'm catching up to TGP with how many times I have watched Modern Family. Currently rewatching Community with my husband and it will be taking the new spot for my comfort show.

Does anyone have any comfort shows I should add to my list? A comfort show for me is generally a sitcom/comedy that I've watched at least 2 times. So I can listen and relax to fall asleep. The at least 2 times part is because I have to know what's happening so I don't miss anything if I fall asleep.

For some reason no matter how hard I look I cant find any uploads of this scene that I could download to use, anyone here have it?

Mindy tells Eleanor that when she woke up the two sides (Good Place and Bad Place) had been fighting over her for a long time. From what we saw of the committee I can't believe they bothered to fight at all rather than just giving in. When Michael turned to them for help, they showed no concern for any human or the capacity to put up any resistance at all to the Bad Place. What changed??

Season Four Now that The Good Place is gone from Netflix, what joke was your favourite? Spoiler

Mine is definitely the Demon Con scene.

ā€œWe go way back, we used to be roommates but if you take another step, I’ll be forced to use this demon exploder on you.ā€

ā€œDemon exploder? Come on man. At least try to make that sound convincing-ā€œ

Blam

ā€œWow. TouchĆ©.ā€

I don’t know why but it’s just so humorous to me it gets at the very least a chuckle every time. Vicky exploding next and the crowd saying stuff like ā€œwow the production of demon con gets better every yearā€ is the cherry on top.

Shirtpost Whenever I'm Ready

Post image
745 Upvotes

The Good Place is without exaggeration my single favourite piece of media, ever. On the 25th of September 2026 The Good Place will leave Netflix. I and I'm sure many others on this subreddit experienced the show for the first time and many times after that on Netflix. I first watched The Good Place in the 2023 holiday season binging the whole show in a week, since then I have recommended it to everyone I meet as the best tv show ever made. I don't have to explain to anyone here why The Good Place is so good, everything about the show is perfectly hand crafted and human, and that's what the show is really about; being human, living life, being good. Rewatching "Whenever you're ready" was the closest anything has ever gotten to making me cry at any media, so that's pretty impressive. Never has any other show made characters feel so real. The episode is, of course, a 10/10 episode, quite possibly the best episode of anything. I will watch The Good Place again, I will watch it many times again, but the form in which I first fell in love with the show will be gone. Death is the finale of a life and this show portrays it in a beautiful way, in way that I will never forget. So I leave you with this, what do we owe to each other? We owe each and every person the pleasure of watching this show.

The show is finally leaving netflix in my country and heartbroken doesn't begin to cover what I'm feeling. This show is what gave me the strength to fight a brain tumor and the loss of my friends, and I still need that strength.

I've been looking online and haven't found where else I can watch the dub. So it'd honestly save my life if any of you knew where I can watch the dub.

I'm really hoping my post doesn't get deleted :[ not sure how to ask this

Shirtpost Questions about Tahani's godparent situation

Post image
79 Upvotes

Hi,

So I've rewatched the show many times now and one thing I've always wondered is that considering Tahani has been shown to speak the truth even when name dropping.

This is a genuine question cause I don't know how godparents work. So these are my questions:

- Does anyone know how many godparents she has?

- How did she get even the Big Ben as a godparent?

Like... I get the weird rich people stuff she did is purposely done by the show to make her sound unbelievable, but how would this even work? Are there people that have Big Ben or other buildings as godparents? Are there people with more than 1 couple of godparents?

Thanks all :)

Shirtpost Why I think the new after-life system actually is stupid (don't hate me) Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

For starters I've watched the totality of this show approximately 50 times atleast. And since it's being removed of Netflix (Stomach ache ) I watched it twice in a row. Therefore, I am not a hater, I am a reverse hater, I just have some concerns that may turn into outright fears... there they go, they're fears now!

As uplifting and "fair" the new after-life system is that they adopted, i have some serious issues with it. I do agree that the last afterlife system (everyone being tortured forever was absolutely mother forking bullshirt), I do not think the new system is fair. Its fair in the sense that all those good people who have been dealt a bad hand or never got the love they needed to be better, get another chance at passing a test (afterlife test) but that's considering they are just crummy and mean people.

The main example I have is, how about people who do unforgivable crimes, i do not see how they can be forgiven or reformed just by passing the test they devised at the end of the show. For example, if someone killed my mother and then I one day saw them in the good place, living it up with their own family members (even though I am also reunited with my mother) there is no world or afterlife where I would deem that fair or just. Or think about war criminals that have killed many many people, they get to take the test and end up in the good place with full villages that they destroyed.

The new test also doesn't take into consideration children, there are never any children shown in the good or bad places (I understand from a show point) but in general I think it's weird that that isn't addressed at all either. Thats just like a side qualm I have with the shows conclusion. Please don't be mad at me, I am not trying to bring down the show as something bad or not thought out because I'd argue that philosophically, it is one of the best thought out shows I've ever seen to this day. Thats why my issue isn't with minor plot holes or things that don't make sense, it's with the foundation of the new tests that they set up which just logistically doesn't seem fair for the reasons I've mentioned.

For anyone who is wondering well ehat would you propose, I am by no means a genius (pobody's nerfect) or as well educated as Professor Chidi but I do have one idea atleast. I think the test system is fine as it is for the majority of people BUT that those who commit horrible, irredeemable, unreversable crimes should either be punished how they used to punish OR if you wanted to be humane, then they should serve a sentence in their own medium place (which let's be real wasn't medium, it was so shirt) on their own UNTIL everyone they have caused harm to directly or indirectly, has walked through the door and are no longer in the good place. That way it's fair for the victims to enjoy their good place without their redeemed tormentors around. Some may say that tahani's parents came through and were better, and as bad as they were as parents, they didn't kill anyone or do severe irreversible damage (ofcourse you could argue they did, but their children forgave them in the good place so even though it was horrible, they were ready to forgive them).

If you think I'm cuckoo bananas, then please tell me where I am wrong or if you have a better suggestion. This is my first time posting here so this discussion may have already happened so apologies but I would appreciate some input, thank you very much.

Everything is Great!
