In case people are not getting what OP means : It's not the same Orso.

u/Caravanczar 11d ago

But the good Orso is named after the morally dubious Orso

u/droppedpackethero 11d ago

Neither of them are the good Orso

u/MiseryGyro 11d ago

Leo dan Brock is in chat yall

u/droppedpackethero 11d ago

I'm not impressed with any of the characters in the second trilogy tbh

u/Keichavik 11d ago

You have every right to your opinion, even if its a poor one

u/snailguy35 11d ago

Interesting take. I liked Orso quite a bit. I think most of the other characters didn’t grow as much as characters in the first trilogy and ended up at the end of the story just a more scarred version of the person they were at the beginning so I guess there’s some merit there. Leo did, but his progression was for the worse and at the end of the day he’s still a fucking idiot and that makes him very hard to like. But honestly, people don’t completely change in a relatively short time, especially if they’re not young and ignorant of the world.

I think Savine became slightly kinder in the end

They're booing you, but you're allowed to have your opinion. Lots of fans dont like the later series, some dont like the standalones at all. Some are sure the first book is the worst, others think the third is such a spit in thr face of the reader tha thry never continue. Ive seen multiple compelling cases for why each seperate stand alone is the best and why the others are shit. I gwnuinely think its a testament to the wuality of the books that there can be so many dissenting ( but strangely all some degree of valid) views on the series.

u/droppedpackethero 10d ago

They are perfectly welcomed to boo. I don't really care. I've sort of stopped seeing internet people as being real people a long time ago lol. The internet, and social media in particular, is largely a mindless conformity engine.  So having an unpopular take means you're thinking for yourself.

I do appreciate the kind words, though.

I'd say with other first law characters in mind Orso at the end was one of the most good people

it's easy to be a saint in paradise.

It's a bit different when you've had your teeth chiseled out or your dad died when you were 12 and then your farm burned out from under you.

u/pitaenigma 11d ago

When I think of the world of The First Law, "Paradise" is often the first word that comes to mind.

7

u/emericktheevil 11d ago

This is what paradise looks like, is it? I've often wondered.

2

u/Caravanczar 11d ago

When I think of paradise, I think of Friendly. Everything is coming up sixes

11

u/FormalKind7 11d ago

The interesting thing is he was not a saint in paradise he only became good and willing to work hard and go through hardship when faced with adversity.

He was a lazy good for nothing in paradise.

2

u/RandomelioElHelio 10d ago

The first trilogy makes it pretty clear that it's not easy being a saint in paradise. Just ask all the kings of The Union. And in the second trilogy, the same thing happens to Leo.

It's been a while since I read any of the series. I can only remember Prince Orso. Who's the other Orso?

19

u/nobinibo 11d ago

Duke Orso of Styria. Arrived at the end of the first trilogy and featured prominently in BSC as the antagonist! :) he ordered the yeeting of Monza from the mountain.

8

u/Originalbenji 11d ago

Thank you. I forgot the prince was named after his grandfather. It's weird because I loved Best Served Cold the most out of the side stories.

3

u/nobinibo 11d ago

Not too weird! Orso was the antagonist but we definitely spent way more time with Monza and the crew. Orso's end was pretty straight forward and by that point the audience was focused on Shivers, Cosca and Shenkt :)

1

u/Originalbenji 11d ago

That's a good point.

3

u/Rmccarton 9d ago

I always liked the wrinkle that while he was undoubtedly a ballbag, he wasn't just concocting a reason to kill the Murcattos because they (Monza) were beginning to outshine him and it was a move to eliminate potential threats to his power (didn't Duke Orso also usurp his predecessor?).

Benna actually was doing exactly that.

40

u/Fabledshark 11d ago

🤣🤣🤣

75

u/The_Akrael 11d ago

Everytime I see Best Served Cold abbreviated to BSC my head jumps to Better Saul Call (Better Call Saul).

36

u/Fair-Pumpkin-8051 11d ago

Better call Caul

12

u/Peezus_H_Christ 11d ago

…Shivers

8

u/ArrrRawrXD 11d ago

I genuinely do not remember the names of most of the books, I just go by "first book, second book, standalone about the North, about revenge, second series first book, etc." abbreviations are far above me

2

u/Inner-Ad2847 9d ago

I find First Law has really distinctive titles. Series like Wheel of Time on the other hand…

17

u/Cipherpunkblue 11d ago

I fucking hate acronyms.

5

u/OTIStheHOUND 11d ago

Ikr

1

u/Cipherpunkblue 11d ago

I knew this was coming.

6

u/AgilityEnjoyer 11d ago

This website in particular is obsessed with them, if you're out the loop it's a pain in the arse to traverse!

5

u/No_-_you_are 9d ago

That’s an “initialism.” An acronym makes a word, not alphabet jumble.

2

u/Dependent_Line6159 11d ago

Same here fuck

2

u/Careful-Possible7189 11d ago

Ikr how much time did OP really save by typing BSC instead of Best Served Cold? I don't get redditors and their obsession with abbreviating everything. Especially since there are some pretty common abbreviations that could mean one thing in one subreddit and a completely different thing in another.

2

u/Cipherpunkblue 11d ago

Yeah, some chosen times of... I don't know, all of them, it can save some time and actually be clear. Most of the times it just makes communication harder.

1

u/AgilityEnjoyer 11d ago

Better than me, my brain went straight to Bachelor of Science.

1

u/Mention_Patient 6d ago

Bachelor of science or bronze swimming certificate comes to mind

20

u/MrTrashMouth7 11d ago

Took me a minute to remember his namesake lol

19

u/Significant-Text3412 11d ago

How's the leg?

3

u/Inner-Ad2847 9d ago

I just read this today :(

1

u/Significant-Text3412 9d ago

I had to put the book down for a while after this.

-8

u/Dekipi 11d ago

Dude you should change this it’s a spoiler

1

u/kaipetica 10d ago

It doesn't say which character this could be referring to. More like iykyk kind of thing

1

u/Dekipi 10d ago

It’s one of my favorite lines but it’ll be clear if op see this and then reads it

48

u/Speedwizard106 11d ago

To be clear, I’ve read/listened to the entire series

17

u/The-Bloody9 11d ago

These might have worked out better if the post flair was meme instead of no spoilers.

6

u/pestilenttempest 11d ago

Have you finished the Age of Madness trilogy?

1

u/[deleted] 11d ago

[deleted]

8

u/Speedwizard106 11d ago

The meme is from the perspective of someone who’s only read up to BSC, not knowing there’s another character named Orso later on.

4

u/Speedwizard106 11d ago

I wasn’t going to at first, then someone commented to just keep reading the series and I’ll get it.

12

u/AstonMac 11d ago

Ngl I would've done the same as Orso once I heard what Benna was up to.

8

u/Just_Roll2995 11d ago

All my homie hate Orso. All my homies love Orso.

22

u/Steris56 11d ago

Lemme answer seriously bc I love my boi - Orso is a standout because he goes on to become one of more psychologically mature characters in the trilogy.

He exhibits a strong capacity for mentalization, maintains empathy for those who oppose him, is cognitively flexible, and patient. One of the primary things holding him back is poor self-worth and that's something many readers can connect to.

15

u/BangThyHead 11d ago

Wrong Orso

5

u/Steris56 11d ago

My brain hath pronounced there is but one Orso. And he hanged for having too much game.

2

u/BangThyHead 11d ago

I hated and loved that ending. I wa so hopeful, but it had to happen.

4

u/ArrrRawrXD 11d ago

The ending made me hopeful Bayaz would win in the end (which is my headcanon in case there's no new books which I doubt). Anyway, hope the last chapter is Bayaz inventing Facebook to have new control over people through its algorithms

6

u/BangThyHead 11d ago

Pretty sure Bayaz is the ultimate villain. Khalul is on one side of the coin, Bayaz the other. But it's the same coin. Perhaps we have been reading different books.

1

u/ArrrRawrXD 11d ago

Yes but Bayaz just wants control, as most rulers, he just happens to be an immortal wizard. Of course he also sorta kept the union in a debt trap, but if it wasn't him it'd be independent banks the union would be paying interest to. Also Hildi's on his side, and against him are Ricke (not too bad but I'd prefer Calder) and a treacherous crippled dictator, so I can't not be against them, and the only way to topple them is through Bayaz it seems like

1

u/Analogue_timepiece 11d ago

Never thought id ever root for bayaz again.. but that ending in Wisdom of Crowds makes me hope bayaz burns them all down.

1

u/Newiiiiiiipa 11d ago

He presided over some awful shit, though, never gave a fuck beyond becoming the new juvens no matter how many kids he steps on. Personally hoping he dies in the most embarrassing way, would be really funny seeing him actually lose everything after all the effort he's spent.

4

u/Moon_and_Sky 11d ago

OP you sly dog.

6

u/zeek609 11d ago

Just keep reading. You'll get it

6

u/Sabot2theknee APOLOGIZE TO MY FUCKING DICE 11d ago

Because he’s a POS, who knows he’s POS… he wishes he wasn’t, sometimes, but he is.

And that connects with me lol

29

u/Zacherius 11d ago

The Orso in Best Served Cold was the villain, that the protagonist strives to kill the whole book. The Orso you're thinking of is named after him.

2

u/Sabot2theknee APOLOGIZE TO MY FUCKING DICE 11d ago

You’re right lol saw orso and skipped the rest.

1

u/Steris56 11d ago

We call this The Good Orso Effect.

1

u/Grimdarkian 11d ago

Hilarious lol

1

u/Metroid_Whisperer 11d ago

Hilarious! 😂

1

u/Alkakd0nfsg9g 11d ago

I swear, I had the same experience and was waiting for the whole book for some kind of reveal of his character

1

u/Smart_Freedom_8155 11d ago

I think it's because other characters are even less likable.

It's an issue with the "new" trilogy - besides Rikke and Orso, they're all kinda garbage.

And I don't mean ethically; Glokta for instance is one of the most self-pitying villains in modern literature, but he's an amazing character.

But yeah the new bunch don't hold a candle to the OG trilogy MC's.

u/TeoS9099 10d ago

The first son I sire will bear name Orso

1

u/uberdoppel 10d ago

This is a strong sign you might not sire children^

0

u/TeoS9099 10d ago

Yeah, probably
