Help with an Andúril Cirth inscription for a tattoo.

I'm getting Andúril from The Lord of the Rings tattooed down my shin. From my understanding the original blade says "Anar Nányë Andúril i né Narsil i macil Elendilo Lercuvanten i móli Mordórëo Isil" which is loosely "Sun- I am Andúril who once was Narsil, sword of Elendil. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me-Moon."

I'd like to shorten the original blade inscription to say Nányë Andúril. Lercuvanten i móli Mordórëo. "I am Andúril. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me." (I think) but I lack the understanding to know which runes mean which words. I know there are 15 "phrases/words" in runes but only 14 in the translation so I'm guessing its not as easy as just take some of the runes out.

Could someone please provide an accurate transcription of this shortened phrase using the Angerthas Eregion runes or point me in the right direction?

Please forgive me if any of this is incorrect, I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan but not exactly a scholar. This is for a permanent tattoo, so accuracy is very important to me. I greatly appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thank you!

Hy guys! I was planning to get a new tattoo, i just want to know what the translation of “my son, live your life with lightness” would’ve been. I saw a website that converts English characters into sindarin, should i trust that?

Trying to learn again and I have a few gaps in my understanding

I'm trying to pick up tengwar transliteration again and learning from Amanye Tenceli this time. Please help me figure out these pieces!

  1. First off - I know that I was wrong about the first assumption at the top of the list (open and closed), F and V don't follow it so it's clearly not a true rule. So are there any discernable patterns that match to the shapes, or did I just make that all up?

  2. The yellow on the right side is covering 2 other tengwar that I don't understand. Are they vowels, consonants, or neither?

  3. R (green) has 2 tengwar - which do I use when? If I'm just learning this for my own fun, could I just pick one of the two to use?

  4. S and Z have 2 tengwar each, so is there one in particular that I should stick with for each?

  5. Bue is for gh as in 'hugh'. So it's silent?

  6. How are the 2 orange ones different from each other?

  7. Bonus question! When I learned this over 10 years ago as I taught myself, I had an ending -y as 2 dots below the previous letter. Where the heck did I come up with that? Was that from my own brain?

First try at Tengwar writing (Proverbs 7:4, translated to Quenya)

Post image

Written by hand on an e-ink tablet.

Initial phrase: "Say to Wisdom: You are my sister! And call understanding your friend."

Quenya translation: "Á quetë Sailien: Elyë nésanya! Ar á esta handë meldetya."

Sailien (= "to Wisdom) is neo-quenya, made by extracting "saila" from the term "alasaila" (= unwise). I know there is also "nolwë" which also means wisdom, but from what I could gather that term has more to do with having deep knowledge of things, rather than the more spiritual connotation that the Proverbs passage has.

On that note, I was surprised to discover that Tengwar even has its own punctuation symbols! Very intricate writing system.

I'm very new to both Quenya and Tengwar. Was my translation roughly correct? Did I make any writing mistakes? Constructive feedback is welcome.

Can someone translate this Elvish letter?

A little bit of context. My friend got a letter for last year Christmas written in elvish language. She tried everything to translate it but was no success. As her last resort she gave it to me but little do I know myself so I came here to try to ask for help. You might say why not ask the person that gave the letter, well that person is not around anymore so it would be hard to reach them. If anyone might know it would be a huge help and hopefully it means something kind.

Amon Amarth - “Upphaf” in Cirth

Post image
18 Upvotes

I’ve been really enjoying Amon Amarth’s new album, “The Allfather Awakens”. One of the tracks, “Uphaff,” is an acoustic song which has lyrics taken from the first 5 stanzas of Henry Adam’s Bellows’ English translation of Völuspá. Amon Amarth’s name comes from Sindarin even if their lyrical content doesn’t reference Tolkien’s Middle-earth, so it felt appropriate to mix this bit of Norse mythology with Tolkien’s invented Cirth.

These are the lyrics as sung / growled in “Upphaf,” so there are a few very minor differences from Bellows’ translation such as the use of Midgard instead of Mithgarth and “cold waves” instead of “cool waves”.

Phonetic Transcription

I’m looking to transcribe the word Aeolorë, which is a coined blend of "Aeolian" (wind) and the Quenya “olor”(dream). The pronunciation is: ee-OH-loh-reh (IPA /iˈoʊloʊɹɛ/). The final ë is a short e, like the vowel in "red”.

I tried the english phonetic and quenya modes for tencil and glaemscrafu but am having trouble getting something consistent.

Do either of the above scripts read correctly to you?

Need Help With Tattoo

I know you guys get a bunch of these requests, so here's mine;

I lost my best friend 6 years ago to suicide, he loved The Lord of The Rings and the Silmarillion. I've recently been engulfed in a newfound love of Tolkien's works and the Peter Jackson trilogy. I've been wanting to have a tattoo to pay tribute to him, but I've never been able to think of a symbol or design that stuck. Untill recently

I want the words "May we find rest in the houses of Mandos"

In a circle above my heart about 4-5 inches in diameter. I'm unsure whether to get it as a transliteration or to have it actually translated. From what Ive seen, there could be a loss in translation (Not that many people can read Quenya or Sindarin)

Also if this is the wrong sub for this I apologize

Sorry for the long ramble but it is very important to me

Thank you for your time

Help with tehtar names

Hi all! I’ve been trying to familiarize myself with the names of the tehtar. I know that Tolkien didn’t necessarily name each one, but I’m curious about the "official" or commonly accepted names for different tehta/diacritic markers. I’ve found conflicting information online or only seen some terms in one place, so I’m looking for some clarity on their use and I'm hoping y'all have some insights. Any help is appreciated!

I'm using a picture here so I can show which tehtar I'm talking about - hope the quality is high enough!

Please check this transcription before permanent engraving (wedding rings)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,
I'm getting wedding rings engraved with Tengwar and want to make sure the transcription is correct before anything is permanently engraved — this is for a June 2027 wedding, so I'd rather double-check now than regret it later.
Source text (French): "Lionel et Maria vingt-six juin deux mille vingt-sept"
(= "Lionel and Maria, June 26th, two thousand twenty-seven")
Generated via Tecendil (tecendil.com), using what I believe is the General Use / phonemic mode (not sure if French mode was available/selected — happy to re-check).
[screenshot attached]
Questions:
Does the mode/transcription look correct for a mix of proper names ("Lionel", "Maria") and French number words?
Are the hyphenated compounds ("vingt-six", "vingt-sept") rendered correctly, or should they not have a hyphen mark in Tengwar?
Any obvious tehta misplacement or wrong tengwa substitution you can spot?
This will be laser-engraved on a ring band, so any correction now saves a costly mistake later. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Hello! Just want to check if this transcription of ‘Even darkness must pass’ is correct before I get it for my first tattoo next month - Thankyou in advance! :)

Is this okay?

Hallo! I have been learning Tengwar for 3 days, mostly from a handbook and a few videos.

The mode is English mode, since I am mostly interested at the letters.

Is this alright? Should I change anything? Any and all tips are welcome:)

(Text is supposed to say: A mountain walked or stumbled, God!)
