Collection/ Item Showcase Anyone have a guess on collection worth?

Hello folks, a friend of mine inherited a rather large collection from his father and we are trying to get a grasp on a rough estimate of what the goods are worth. Not trying to sell or anything. Just hoping to have an idea of what he has. Many, many thanks!

Im a collector with a very humble gathering of treasures, but I think my most treasured piece would have to be my arctic fox named kuflu, named such by the inupiak woman who gifted him to my. I have 1/2 of his hide too. Whats your most treasured piece?

I Made This! Ludo the Mantis Shrimp

I recently finished work on this wee peacock mantis shrimp, named Ludo. It was my first time working on any type of shrimp (I specialise in crabs, but I'm slowly broadening my horizons to all crustaceans) and it was not without its challenges! Pretty pleased with how it turned out, and his owner is over the moon with the result. Open to questions, thoughts or feedback!

Taxidermy MOUNT Help Taxidermy pheasant (80s) white powder/dust

Hi I have just acquired my first taxidermy (a pheasant) who I’m told is from the 80s. However upon inspection white dust keeps coming off from under the feathers when I was inspecting it and I’m worried is toxic/arsenic? It’s currently in my bedroom since I live at home and my parents don’t like it but any advice? The seller did say had previously been covered in plaster but I just want to know what more experience people would advise thanks since the dust is not on top of his feathers. Hes beautiful other than that. He was in postage for about a month or less in a box.

So my girlfriend bought this fox tail awhile back from depop and found these little things within the tail, we don’t know if it’s dirt or some kind of bug (we recently found a bug from the same seller unfortunately) so I’m just wondering if anyone here has any ideas what it could be
Me advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

"How Do I...?" How do I get old person smell out of thrifted fur?

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

Hello hello! I found this beautiful piece in an old plastic Halloween costume bag labelled “real fur for crafts” yesterday! I’m super pumped. Before I can do anything with it though, I have to deal with the smell. The old person smell is strong with this one. I have aired it out for a full day in our backyard and it has barely made any difference. I’ve read that maybe baking soda can help? Any advice would be much appreciated

Edited to correct myself. It’s been hung up outside for 24 hours. Guess it just felt like 2 days lolol

Taxiderpy / Just for Fun Extra rabbit head = doll, I guess

She's beauty, she's grace,

I bashed off a porcelain doll's face

I've seen folks make these before, and have clients buy heads for this purpose, but it's the first I made. They're so silly. I can kinda see the appeal 😂

Everclear-mummified meat rabbit head on a vintage porcelain doll's body, thrifted.

... I kept the doll's hair for science. And by science, I mean I gave my cat a mullet. He digs it

Oddities, bone, etc. help Any truth to the saying that a skinned cat and rabbit look the same?

Once I read that long ago it was good form to leave the paws on a skinned rabbit for sale since without them a cat looks the same.

It occurred to me that you folks might have firsthand knowledge of how much anatomical similarity there is.

Edit: I meant selling the carcass of a rabbit for meat, not the pelt, sorry for not being explicit about that.

It's been nearly a year and a half since I got my beloved boy back from the taxidermist and was finally really inspecting him. I noticed this...growth? Lack of bone? On one side of his maxilla (?).

I know losing a tooth could cause bone loss from my own personal experience, but is this what that bone loss actually looks like? Or is this something else that CAUSED the tooth to come out?

"How Do I...?" Pet fish!

My dad has an albino oscar fish and he’s quite large, the size of a grown man’s large hand, I wanna preserve him as a wet specimen once he passes away, as the fish is getting a bit old now, would I use ethanol or formalin ? :0

Feedback Appreciated Should I do anything with my dead snake?

My pet cornsnake just died today. Cats killed her, she must've gotten out somehow. She's got tons of wounds, and isn't really in a good state (I mean, she's obviously dead). I feel really guilty; it wasn't my fault. I know that. But all of the 'what ifs' always come to your head.

I'm wondering what I want to do. If anything at all. I probably will if my dad will let me. Do I just bury her and take her skeleton when she's decomposed? Do I try and see if anyone can fully preserve her despite her injuries?

So I keep coming across pelts that have their paws missing, as well as tails, and I’ve come up with a plan. Instead of going through the process of piecing together multiple damaged pelts to form one complete one, I could make them little prosthetics!

I feel like this is more budget friendly than searching for a 300$+ pelt that’s fully intact, plus cyborg taxidermy. Once I’ve pulled this off I’ll post it! What do yall think?

I have this big mofo in the entry of my home at the top of the stairs and every time I walk by him I have to say hi to him or I feel rude. Is anyone else like this? I have full blown convos with him when I’m vacuuming the stairs.

[Solved, kangaroo. Thank you] I recently inherited a massive bundle of pelts and would like help with identifying the one in the middle with the long tail. The white below it is half a sheep for size reference. It's obviously home tanned (U.S. likely) but age is uncertain. Let me know if there's more info that would be helpful

"How Do I...?" Moth infestation: how to remove eggs

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi,

I'm a very casual taxidermy owner so please forgive my ignorance on these matters.

I have an antique kestrel which is kept in a perspex case I didn't realise had a gap in it. Moths have got in and been having a whale of a time eating my boy. I've frozen him for a week and am keeping him in there for another week to make sure those eggs are dead.

He really is completely infested though and I'm not sure how to remove the eggs, or if he might just be a lost cause at this point. I've attached some photos for reference.

Does anyone have any advice of how I might get rid of these eggs, or if I should just give up? I'd be very sad to lose him but I must admit the eggs are really not nice.

"How Do I...?" teeny snake skeleton

Thumbnail gallery
44 Upvotes

I found this little snake skeleton by my home (Austin, TX), I don't know really anything about preserving skeletons but did look it up and am getting the sense that soaking a snake skeleton is risky for its little bones. There were a few ants by it when I found it and it seems to have been picked pretty clean. Do folks have recommendations on what I should do to best further preserve this, or should I just leave it be to not risk damaging it further?

Thank you!

"How Do I...?" Which glue to use for securing antler in the skull?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I bought this rack at an antique store in the middle of no where and I thought it’s the most beautiful rack I’ve ever seen. The left antler, right in this photo, is loose in the socket but not to the point where it comes out. I want to glue it or something so it’s secure when I mount it. is there a specific glue or something I should be using or is superglue good? I know nothing about any of this!
