Workshop The Landlord's-Opoly release
By now, many of you likely have heard that Monopoly was originally a game that was rather against Monopolists and was known as The Landlord's Game. This game was created in 1904 by Lizzie Magie and featured the unmistakable building blocks for modern Monopoly.
Just about every component and the rules for The Landlord's Game can be found online, and on TTS already, however the art on those (while good looking) may be a bit busy for some people to quickly play, so the goal of this little project was to preserve the gameplay/rules of the original Landlord's Game but use the visuals of modern Monopoly to help those who are familiar with it quickly slide into it.
I tried to keep things as accurate as I could when it came to both game-text and flavor text (preserving the quotes that were on the original cards). This should pretty much only be a visual change from the original Landlord's Game, not mechanical. That said some things were re-worded to make them a little more clear, but any of these changes should NOT affect gameplay.
For those of you who have played Monopoly a bunch already, there are some interesting mechanics I think you'll want to check out that have not been preserved through the years by its many iterations. To name a few:
- No Bankruptcy/elimination mechanic.
- The Single Tax Rule
- The Speculation! space
- Rolling a Railway Pass
- The pre-game purchasing round (one of my favorites).
To make this easier, in the rules I have highlighted any of the big changes to the rules in yellow, so it should be new to both Monopoly veterans and newbies alike!
