Texas Trails Hiking Texas’s Brand-New Post Oak Ridge State Park

Went in completely blind to check out the state's newest 3,100-acre park on the Lampasas/Burnet County line. 2.5 miles of dirt road to get in, no running water, and limited cell service, but the 300-ft bluffs overlooking Post Oak Falls are awesome. Happy to answer any questions about road conditions, trail terrain, or gate access for anyone looking to check it out.

The Stars at Night Safe spot to park SATX

I’m looking for a safe place to park my RV around San Antonio or nearby.

I’m disabled with Autism and ADHD, and I had to stop working because I was no longer able to keep up with the day-to-day demands of a job. I’m currently waiting on my disability and benefits cases to be resolved, but those processes take time, and I’m trying to keep myself and my pets housed in the meantime.

The RV is a 36–40 foot diesel Class A. I don’t necessarily need hookups. I mainly need a safe, legal place to park it and live in it temporarily. I can be self-contained, so water and electricity aren’t required if the location allows it.

I’m looking for something free or very low cost until my disability cases are resolved. I’m also willing to help with yard work, cleaning, maintenance, computer/IT work, or other things that might help.

I’m quiet, respectful, and would take care of the property. I’m not looking for anything fancy. I just need a safe place to stay out of the way and have a little stability while I get things sorted out.

If anyone knows of a private property, rural spot, church or community connection, or anything similar, please send me a message. Even a few weeks or a good lead would help me tremendously.

Thank you.

Texas the Beautiful I mapped Texas swimming holes, hot springs, and waterfalls, with fees, reservations, and closures

Hey y'all,

For the last few months I've been chipping away at something for Texas swimming: a single place to see the named holes, springs, and falls, whether you need a reservation, what it costs, and if it's actually open.

I finally got it live and wanted to share. It's called swimholesmap.com, and the point is simple. Hill Country swimming is a maze of state parks, city pools, and private springs. Figuring out if Hamilton Pool needs a booking, if Jacob's Well is swimming or just looking, or what Barton Springs costs usually means five tabs and a Facebook rumor.

Here's what it covers:

  • 12 named swimming holes, 4 hot springs, and 4 waterfalls on record
  • An interactive map of all of them
  • For each spot: access, fee, whether you need a reservation, and any closure or hazard note on file
  • The swimming-holes list is at swimholesmap.com/tx/swimming-holes, including Hamilton Pool, Hippie Hollow, Krause Springs, Blue Hole, Devil's Waterhole, Garner / Frio, and Blanco State Park
  • Hot springs (Barton Springs, Balmorhea, Comal, San Marcos) and waterfalls (Gorman, McKinney, Pedernales, Caprock) are on the same hub

I started building this because I kept getting burned showing up to a hole that was reservation-only, bacteria-closed, or not swimming at all. So I built the thing I wanted to exist.

It's just me working on this on the side, no team.

Would love for you to poke around and tell me what's missing or wrong. This is the named, documented set, not every limestone pool on Barton Creek. If there's a public hole near you that should be on here, I'm all ears.

Let me know if you have anything you would like to be added!

Texas Hunting Sam Houston National Forest

Looking to camp in the sam houston national forest during thanksgiving. However it’s hunting season, any tips you can give so we can hike and bike safely? Anyone know if there a lot of hunters around that time? Lots of ticks? Etc..If there’s somewhere else you recommend for this time of year we would be happy to look into it! We will have dogs with us as well.

How open typically are Lake Meredith’s first-come, first-serve campsites this time of year?

I’m gonna be up in the Pandhandle for a weekend pretty soon for some camping and hiking. I saw Lake Meredith National Recreational Area has some free campsites that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. I’d like to go with that as a first option, but I don’t want to be caught with my pants down with no campsites available after driving for several hours to get there, so my backup plan is to pivot to Palo Duro and pay for a site there. Is this a bad plan? Should I just reserve a site at Palo Duro?

Big bend ranch state park

Hey everybody, after falling in love with the National Park I’ve decided to try out the neighboring state park! Does anybody have any camping recommendations? I don’t want to book a site and not be able to get there because of road conditions. I drive a Subaru Outback no special tires or anything. We would love to camp in the interior but if the roads are too rugged the river campground would be fine. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone! we recently set up a dedicated subreddit for texas master naturalists - r/TexasMasterNaturalist . A lot of people going to state parks go there for birding, herping or mothing and this sub would be a great place to get recommendations on places to visit near state parks or parts within the state parks. Please free to join and ask questions and connect !

Recently stopped by Boykin Springs and the old Aldridge Sawmill and got trapped in a rainstorm. Trekking out of the wood I got some 4K shots of the lil falls on Boykin Creek. An under rated area of Tx in my opinion.

Hey y'all,

I finally got pulled for a drawn hunt, enchanted rock SNA, antlerless deer. What should I expect. I've obviously never been pulled before. What does the hunt look like? Can I drive to my blind?

Llano River Paddling

I'm interested in doing maybe a 3ish hour paddle trip on the Llano, either in the Mason to Llano stretch, or the South Llano around Junction. I've explored other hill country rivers but I'm not familiar with this one. What stretches do you recommend?
