Hello r/SyracuseU! This came up earlier than I thought so I was not prepared (I'm also abroad in France right now so my timezone is different than SU, so it's causing a slight issue.)
The time has finally come for decisions to come out for the Class of 2029 (and Architecture 2030 (that's a real year now).) This is the thread for r/A2C's (Applying to College) Syracuse thread if you want to discuss it more there, but I'm also opening this up as an overall thread for discussion and see if people have questions about Syracuse, admissions, etc.
Seeing a 70% upvote rate and minimal comments against, I've gone ahead and banned direct Twitter/X links to this sub using an automod feature. To be clear, we rarely get this content to begin with, but we may as well cut it off now. Please default to screenshots instead and link to other sources. For those who are not familiar with the reason for this change, switch your Reddit feed over to 'All' and you'll immediately see the movement-- first, Twitter/X requires an account to view linked tweets, and second, this platform has shifted from one of open sharing to that of a mouthpiece for extremist political agendas and deliberate misinformation.
A note on moderation in general-- this sub has rules that limit/ remove content from most brand new accounts, posts that are particularly spammy, and/or language that is similar to specific troll posts we've had to deal with in the past. If you try to post something that does not get through the filters, please contact the mods directly. Please help us moderate this sub by using reporting features as and when needed.
I finally wrote an article about Jason Arday and what it means to be a Black academic in this moment. It took me some time to process his passing and to step away from the public discussions as I worked through my own triggers and traumas from my 7 years on the tenure-track and many years as a disabled Black college student.
I no longer work at Syracuse University. I can't share any details about why or what happened yet. More to come, beloveds.
First, I apologize if this is in the wrong spot. Anytime I have taken my kids to events at the dome i’m usually able to buy a parking pass for one of the garages or lots close by. I’m taking my son to the football game on November 7 and I was unable to purchase any parking passes other than the sky top lot.
Again, I apologize if this is a dumb question, we don’t go too many events there, but do they have shuttles that run back-and-forth before and after the game or are we just making the long walk?
My daughter is considering applying EA or ED for Syracuse. It’s her first choice. However, I’ve heard that applying early basically takes you out of the running for merit aid because they feel they’ve got you hooked line and sinker. We can’t afford the school without significant non-need based aid. Despite what our FAFSA score is we don’t have that amount to shell out every year. Should she apply regular decision?
Wondering if anyone's carpooling/ride-sharing to the DC area for Thanksgiving? My partner and I are students at Upstate, not SU, but would be very grateful to any peers at SU makin the trip down 🙏 thanks! (Just one way is fine)
Hi everyone!
I’m an incoming PhD student at Syracuse University for Spring 2027, and I’m looking for an apartment near campus starting in late December 2026 or January 2027.
My preferences are: 1B1B preferred, but I’m also open to a 2B2B apartment.
Ideally within a reasonable distance of Syracuse University.
Utilities included would be a big plus, especially electricity and heating.
If you have an available tent, are looking for a roommate, or know of any good housing options, please feel free to DM me!
I’d appreciate any leads or recommendations. Thanks so much!
I’m looking for a place to watch the game since the bar I usually go to is pretty far, so I’m looking for a new place with an energetic crowd. I have heard it gets pretty hype for the SU games, curious if any of that energy is present for Bills games, if they play them? Thanks!
Hey guys, I signed my off-campus housing lease early thinking I'd be going abroad in the spring, but I there's been a change of plans so I'd need someone to take over my spot at my two-bedroom off-campus apartment next year in the fall. You'd take over my spot of the lease and there is already one other tent in the fall and two tenants in the spring.
The place is $875 / month plus limited utilities and right next to campus, so it’s a great grab. If you're interested or know someone who might be, please DM me I'd really appreciate it!
My name is Clara Mey and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware. I am conducting a research study about disabled students’ experiences with disability accommodation processes in higher education for my dissertation. As a disabled graduate student, this topic is particularly important to me!
Syracuse University was randomly selected as part of my analysis for my dissertation, and I wanted to make sure that students at the randomly selected universities/colleges had the opportunity to participate in my research!
In order to participate, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Have attended college or graduate school in the US within the last five years
Self-identify as disabled or having a chronic health or mental health condition
You do not need a formal diagnosis, and you can participate whether or not you registered or applied for accommodations!
If you agree, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey taking about 20 minutes. You may also choose to enter into a drawing for one of five $20 gift cards at the end of the survey. If you choose to enter, your email will not be associated with your survey responses.
If you would be interested in participating in this study or would like to learn more, please click the link here:Disability and Higher Education Survey. And if you know people who might be interested, feel free to share this information!
Good afternoon everyone! My names max and I’m looking for new people to join my band! The bands name is small batch and we have been around for a few years. We are looking for bass drums and keys. Text me if you want more details!
I'm a journalism student trying to collect some information for a story I'm writing about women in male dominated programs (engineering, computer science, business, etc. If anyone wouldn't mind sharing their experience to be included in my article that would be great! If you prefer not to share publicly you can also message me privately.
Does anyone have any insight into ANT 121 (Peoples & Cultures of the World)? I'm tryna take it during the spring semester but it overlaps with my psych class, which is a required class as well.
Update! Two amazing redditors have reached out to help and are in touch with the library. I don't want to inundate the librarians with this request, so I think we are good for now! Thank you, guys, so much for all the help! I can't wait to see the map! :)
Hi Syracuse! A bit of an unusual request from an amateur historian down in Erie, PA.
Background: I am currently researching the early history of a family property in western Erie County, particularly its connection to the construction of the Erie Extension Canal.
In researching historical maps of Erie County, Pennsylvania, I came across a reference in Penn State’s Pennsylvania Early County Maps and Atlases to an 1837 map of the county by Oliver Spafford that shows, among other features, the early canal system:
Map of the County of Erie Pennsylvania, published by O. Spafford, Erie, Pa., 1837 (OCLC: 28118597).
In searching for a surviving copy, I found what appears to be this map listed in Syracuse University’s “A Guide to Maps in the Gerrit Smith Collection” as Map 13: Oliver Spafford, 1837, Map of the County of Erie, Pennsylvania in the following inventory: https://library.syracuse.edu/digital/guides/s/smith_g_maps.pdf
I have been trying to locate a copy of this map but have not been able to find a digitized version online. When I (a non-affiliate) email the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) to ask whether the map even exists, I get an automated email saying they can't provide remote research services to non-affiliates and to check back in 2-3 months.
Request: Could you confirm whether this map is still held by the SCRC? If so, does a photograph or digital copy of it exist?
If not, would any student be willing to visit Special Collections and take a good photograph (or digital scan) of the map for me? I’d be happy to Venmo you for your time and trouble! I would also be happy to pay any applicable reproduction or digitization fees.
TL;DR: Syracuse Special Collections appears to have a rare 1837 map of Erie County (Oliver Spafford, Map 13 in the Gerrit Smith Collection) that I can’t find digitized anywhere. SCRC says they are not taking non-affiliate inquiries and to check back in 2–3 months. I’m hoping a Syracuse student can just confirm it’s even there and, if possible, get a photo/digital copy for me. Happy to Venmo you for your time and cover any reproduction fees!
Hey, I'm currently a freshman in college looking to transfer into SU next fall. I love theatre more than anything, but I'm not going to major in it. Does anyone have experience getting involved with theatre as a non major? Are there a lot of opportunities in theatre for non majors? I know about first year players but I don't know what I'd do junior and senior year after that...
Hey everyone, I’m not trying to spam the group, but I’m a grad student at Syracuse finishing up my degree asynchronously, so I’m no longer living in Syracuse and I’m looking for someone to take over my lease at University Village at Colvin.
I’m especially hoping to find someone who might be returning to SU during the semester, coming back from abroad for the spring, transferring, or just needing housing for the rest of the year.
The rent is $1,000/month and the lease runs through July 2027. If you’re interested or know someone who might be looking, please DM me. I’d really appreciate it!
Hey everyone! I worked with five other Newhouse students to develop an Uber campus activation that’s coming to Syracuse tomorrow (10/2) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Quad outside Sims Hall!
There will be interactive games, giveaways, freebies, and more! It would mean a lot to our team if you stopped by and checked it out! 🧡
