syncspirit v0.4.7 release

I'm glad to announce v0.4.7 release!

Syncspirit is continuous peer-to-peer realtime syncrhonization tool. It implements BEP protocol and provides seamless interoperability with existing syncthing nodes and clients.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/basiliscos/syncspirit/refs/heads/master/docs/fltk-overview.gif

You can download ready-to-use binaries for Linux x86_64 (AppImage), Windows 32 bit (WindowsXP is supported), Windows 64 bit and Mac OS X (Apple silicon).

Notable changes (since previous v0.4.5 announce):

  • [core, fltk] allow to use file patterns (PCRE-syntax) accept or ignore local files into cluster
  • [core] add start offline option
  • [fltk, win32, os x] add system tray icon
  • [fltk] use menu instead of toolbar
  • [core] introduce services layer (allow stop/start/restart of networking)
  • [core] dns resolver actor: randomly choose ip address of resolver server
  • [core, fix] more reliably connect to relays.syncthing.net
  • [core, win32, bugfix] use utf8 for displaying error messages
  • [core, win32, bugfix] allow to use long file paths (260+ symbols)

Syncspirt source code uses GPLv3 license.

Any feedback is welcome!

WBR, basiliscos.

Maybe you could add what is better/different to syncthing or how both could work together? From this post alone, I don't know WHY I should change anything with my Syncthing setup and therefore wouldn't do it.

There is nothing wrong with syncthing, if it works perfectly and fits you your needs, you shouldn't of course.

syncspririt is about x14 times faster* (on a small files, on big files the throughput is limited to your network, and it is the same), supports a bit different platforms, has a bit different UI (matter of taste, of course)

Also I plan to do selective sync (asked for decade) in the next syncspririt release.

* it should be noted, that syncthing does fsync and other heavy I/O synchronization to save data when power is abruptly off. syncspririt does this not, but may be some option will appear in future.

syncspririt is about x14 times faster

Well, maybe you should lead your original posts with that?

How does it accomplish such a huge jump in speed?

Hey nice work! So what reason would someone have to change from syncthing to this project?

I feel myself a bit uneasy with that design

... From the developers GitHub page.

I do not. Syncthing is great. Trust is my immediate concern about a new, random project self-promotion on Reddit with my files.

EDIT: Source clarification

Huh? What are you quoting?

Developer GitHub page. Apologies for the lack of a source.

Good work! Syncthing's BEP protocol is great, but the all-in-one reference implementation in Go is the opposite of lean, quite noticable on low-spec devices and with many peers, folders, or files. Syncspirit is a very good contribution to this ecosystem.

Feedback: For me, the best addition would be the untrusted device mode, which allows the client to sync with an instance sitting on an untrusted server.

Thank you for kind words, I'll think about adding untrusted device mode, seems not too complex to do.
