Other (see on-topic rules first) Noticed several Swedes who slip into this nasal quality/sounds when speaking like this girl, what causes this?

Thanks to 46 of you who were kind enough to answer our survey, we have updated the subreddit rules to better reflect the members wishes. Those who are interested can review the survey responses here. If you are unhappy with anything, feel free to comment!
tl;dr:
These are the current subreddit rules:
Flaming, trolling, discrimination, personal attacks or bad-faith arguments are not allowed.
This is a language-learning subreddit, and all posts should be about the Swedish language, culture or studying Swedish. Posts about moving to and living in Sweden are not on-topic. It's okay to make a post asking for media recommendations to help you study, but any posts sharing media need to be about the Swedish language, not just in the Swedish language. Please give your post the proper flair!
Feel free to ask your questions about the language or culture, ask for learning tips or contribute your own tips or links to websites helpful for learning. However, we do urge you to check the FAQ and list of resources first. You might also find an answer to your question by using the search function. And when posting a resource, please clarify what it does and how it can help or be used to learn Swedish.
While tips and recommendations are always welcome, you are probably not reaching a new audience if you post the same resource after a few days or even weeks – even if there has been a new update to it.
Therefore, we ask that you please wait for at least two months between reposts, and even then they should only be made if there has been a notable update. Do not post the same thing every two months only to farm attention.
To prevent a flood of community links, we ask you to contact us via modmail before you post links to Whatsapp groups, Discord servers etc. We permit Swedish-oriented communities that we deem could be helpful to our members.
Users may ask for tips on niche communities. You are allowed to link to communities as comments to such requests.
In general, we recommend the Discord server "Svenska – Learn Swedish".
Please keep all chat and penpal requests in the dedicated megathread, as these would otherwise flood the main feed.
While we are happy to point you in the right direction, answer your questions along the way or check your grammar when you're done, we will not actually do your homework for you. This is a place for learning, not cheating.
This goes doubly for professional tasks: most users on r/Svenska are not trained translators, copywriters or language consultants. Feel free to ask linguistic questions, but don't crowdsource practical, qualified work. Contact a professional instead!
It is not permitted to directly exchange copyrighted material, including textbook pdfs, or link to places that illegally make these available.
We encourage all links and recommendations to places where such material can be legally obtained. A good place to start is our list of resources.
AI-generated content is banned. This includes LLM-written answers to language questions, LLM-generated study resources as well as apps that are mostly vibe-coded. We might give leeway to professionally developed tools – contact us via modmail to ask.
When posting an app or other language-learning resource, we urge you to clarify whether and how AI has been used (i.e. not at all), to avoid being reported or have your post unjustly removed.

Learning a new language is easier with the support of friends, be it other learners going through the same journey, native speakers to lead you along the way, or even less experienced learners that you can help out to help both of you understand things better. If you're looking for pen pals, gaming buddies, book clubs or just friends so you can practice the language – through immersion or studies alike – feel free to post a comment in this thread and tell us a bit about yourself, or reply to commenters you would like to get in touch with.
Suggested post format – add or remove headers as you like:
Name or handle: (whatever you want to be called)
Swedish level: (your approximate proficiency, expressed e.g. in A1 to C2, beginner to fluent or how long you've been learning/studying)
Language: (your native language and other languages you know or are learning)
Looking for: (Duolingo pals? Native helpers? Steam friends? People in your area? Someone who wants to discuss Swedish music?)
Presentation: (A more free-form introduction of yourself as a person!)
We recommend you do not include private contact information in your post; if you find somebody you want to keep in touch with, contact them through Reddit's direct messaging instead.
Please note that this thread is only intended for finding people for the purpose of learning Swedish or helping learners. Irrelevant posts may be deleted. Likewise, asking for pen pals outside of this thread is not permitted, and any such threads will be removed and redirected here.
As always, you are also very welcome to look for chat mates in our Discord server.
And if you posted in the old thread, feel free to make a new post here!

Hej allihopa!
Tack!

Do you use the word "prylsamhälle"? If so, what would the nearest English equivalent be - consumer society, throw-away society?

Is it just me, or is there a sense of a “ghost r” when retroflexes are pronounced? Examples: kort, bord, barn.
I came across a mention of something called r-coloring in my research, that is, an r that seems to be there, but isn’t. Anyway, I believe the r is deleted in these cases, but perhaps the movement of the tongue after the vowel creates this sensation.
Thank you all!

Hej tillsammans,
r/Svenska • u/SpecificVictory3484 • 3d ago
I've noticed that the Swedish ö sometimes seems to sound more open before r, almost like an open e. Is this a real phonetic feature of Swedish pronunciation, or am I just imagining it? For example, does the vowel sound different in words like höra or röra compared with words where ö isn't followed by r?
I'd appreciate any explanations or examples!

Does ther word "griftero" mean anything to you? The peace of the grave perhaps?

Which foreign children's cartoons from my childhood (1990s-2000s) can I watch for free on YouTube with Swedish dubbing?
I'm learning Swedish and looking for full episodes with Swedish audio (svenskt tal), not English audio or Swedish subtitles. I've noticed that adult series and films are rarely dubbed in Swedish, so I'm focusing on children's shows.
Which series and channels do you recommend?
I'm bigginer

Do you ever use the word ”lank” (tunn, smaklös dryck)? I have found no examples. Does it occur in the indefinite form as in ”Usch, det var en lank!”? Surprisingly I can find no connection to English ”lank” (adjective used for example of long, dull, limp hair).

So now i'm learning swedish as my third language and my Level is good i'd say (B1) with a very natural accent, my Swedish friends always tell me that my Swedish is incredible for a foreigner
I can say i like German and Russian equally but i'm stucked between them, idk which one should i REALLY focus as my future language after swedish
So i can explain my reasoning for both languages:
Russian: i have tried learning this language before (lasted few weeks) i can read cyrillic (very slowly tho) i like russian and this fact that it opens doors to other slavic languages too so its pretty useful outside of russia too or maybe good job opportunities in slavic countries, for me the main reason isn't all of this main reason is my girlfriend which she is from ukraine originally and since she speaks russian i wanted to feel more connected to her (bcs she is learning my native language)
It was pretty much all i can say about russian
German: same as Russian i have tried learning German too i can say i wasn't serious that time ofc and i was just testing the Waters haha, i know german is very difficult but should mention this too i already know two Germanic languages so that may make it more easier,
i have already very good pronounciation in German as others said and swedish and German are pretty close to each other so when you know swedish a lot of rules and words automatically makes sense to you because they are the same in german, my love is for Sweden and i planned to move to Sweden for living and working but maybe Germany become my destination since it has largest Economy in the EU
I'm 19 years old and as my learning schedule, by my 20th Birthday probably i will be B2 in swedish (my goal is C1)

In "Circeln" from Engelsforstrilogi a mother says to her daughter:
Nej.
Folkets lexikon says that "duktig flicka" means "good girl". Not 100% sure why that's a bad thing, or why a parent would think that. It kind of seems to imply that she wants her daughter to do drugs and party.
Of course, on the other hand the English translation gives "overachiever" here, which would make more sense, but I'm not sure that's actually accurate to the Swedish.

In english, if there's a song we really like, we might call it a banger or a bop or something like that. What would be the swedish equivalent?
r/Svenska • u/anon33249038 • 6d ago
Specifically grandparents. Like in English the word is "Grandfather," but we call him "Grampa." Or in German, "Großvater" becomes "Opa." Or in Spanish, "Abuelo" becomes "Tata" or "Tito."
Does Swedish have anything like that? The most I can find are the actual titles of "farfar" and "farmor."

Is the Swedish /r/ a tap [ɾ], a trill [r], or something else? Does its pronunciation depend on its position in the word?
For example, what would be a narrow IPA transcription of:
I already understand that Swedish has regional variation. I’m specifically interested in the standard pronunciation, since I’m using SAOL and other Swedish learning materials as my main references, and I’d like to have a consistent pronunciation model to follow.

This is from Engelsfors, Cirkeln. The full sentence:
Thing is, a couple of paragraphs earlier there's this:
Jag ligger ju så långt efter dom andra.
That's with 99% certainty for "de" (or "dem"?).
So if "sen" for "sedan" is true, can anyone explain to me what this is meant to convey?
The second sentence is said by a schoolboy, so I can accept that he's supposed to speak colloquially (athough my understanding is that nobody pronounces "de" as "de" in that context). But the title is uttered by a school principal.
On the other hand narration uses the spelling "sedan", so it's not universal.

I obviously know that there’s a lot of children shows with a Swedish dub but I wanted the genre of shows that I already watch and like. I like glee, pretty little liars, any tlc reality show and anime. I also know Disney Channel has a lot of dubs that I’m down to watch to! I’m open to other options of course!
