Saturday (Oct 17), myself and few others will be going to the Outer Banks and staying around mile post 20. We do this every year for a week and drink and fish near the cottage or go to Coquina Beach and fish. One of the trips participants doesn't want to go further south than Oregon Inlet so fishing that area may not happen. I've got good rigging and am no stranger to fishing the surf but we typically punk out if the surf is too rough. I grew up being told if we have to throw more than 3oz then we ain't going to try. The weather next week looks a bit rough, I'm seeing some decent NE winds up to 30mph (only on certain days, not the entire time) and rough surf for what looks like most of the week. During the Nor'easter that blew through a couple weeks ago I was seeing people catch some amazing bull reds, which is our typical target. I'm planning on grabbing a few more larger weights, frog tongues, sputniks, and maybe triangle snag claws.
My questions are these: would you fish the upcoming weather, knowing it could be miserable? Is there anything you would for sure take to ensure you can fish? Should I just have the attitude of "fuck it, hand me a beer and some mullet and watch this cast"?
My gear is a 10.5 Speedmaster MH rod. Daiwa BG5000 reel with 50lb braid. Ive got fish finder rigs, bottom rigs, hi-lo rigs, pompano/bluefish/drum specific rigging, lures to throw with my inshore rod if we fish sound side or if the surf calms at all.
Thanks for any advice.

Buddy and me are looking for a trip next year for our annual get together tournament, I was thinking mid September in jersey around island beach or long beach for albies, bonito, Spanish and blues, seamed like the best time to have a run at all of them at once.

Iām headed down to obx next week for the red drum tournament and need a way to light my rod tip up at night to detect bites. I tried those little clip on lights last year with limited success, I think I ended up taping them on so they wouldnāt fly off mid cast. This year I was thinking of getting some of those neon Halloween braclets and just taping them to the rod tip, I found some 8ā on Amazon. Iām just curious what everyone else uses or if there is another product I should try.

My brother-in-law got me into surf fishing earlier this year when he took me out to Assateague National Seashore, and I think itās safe to say Iām officially addicted.
We picked up our OSV permits and have been driving out onto the beach to fish the spring and fall red drum runs. This past weekend, we spent 57 hours out on the sand, sleeping in our cars, fishing through the night, and pretty much living on the beach.
We managed to land two beautiful red drum, a ray, a shark, and a handful of smaller fish along the way.
Thereās just something about being out there for days, waiting for that rod to bend, and finally getting a big red on the line. I came off the beach exhausted, covered in sand, and already thinking about our next trip.
Safe to say Iāve found a new obsession. Nothing quite like the feeling of landing those reds!

Was reeling in this croaker then I felt a brick wall on the end of my line, thought a ray hit my other hook or something until I saw the root ball in the surf.

Why am I able to cast my line further practicing at a football field than at the beach into the surf? Iām able to get my line out 50-70 yards on a football field but when Iām actually at the beach it doesnāt feel like Iām able to get close to 50 yards at all?

Hey All,
My brother-in-law keeps a surf casting rig at his MILās place near Bucerias, MX and spends time down there around the end of Dec and beginning of Jan
Looking for some recommendations on lures to give him for a gift. I dunno anything about the sport, so any suggestions are much appreciated
Thanks!!

I recently introduced my girlfriend to saltwater surf fishing in SoCal and she would love to catch more Leopard Sharks and other medium sized sharks and rays. I'm trying to get my girlfriend her own saltwater surf setup so she could go surf/pier fishing with me in Orange County or by herself when she's up in the Malibu/Santa Barbara area every now and then. She told me that she doesn't need the most expensive strongest setup, just something that's fairly priced, will last her long enough, and will land her most of the medium-sized sharks and rays in the SoCal surf. I have already found the perfect surf rod for her, a PENN Battalion II 10 or 11 ft medium heavy surf rod that I am gong to purchase on discount sale from PENN's official website, I just need a spinning reel.
I was about to purchase her a Pursuit V 5000 or 6000 size reel at my local tackle shop today, as I myself own a Pursuit V 6000 size reel that I absolutely love and I'd recommend for first-time beginner saltwater fishermen. While speaking to my local tackle shop owner, he did show me the recently released Fierce V 5000 and 6000 size reels that he has in stock. Admittedly, I thought the Fierce V reels looked great, but I'm not really familiar with their performance as they're recently new products, and I'm only familiar with the previous Fierce IV generation (which I still own and regularly use for my pier and surf fishing).
Has anyone here recently owned and bought a Fierce V reel that they can tell me about their performance, and whether or not they're worth the extra money over the Pursuit V 5000/6000 size reels? I would like to know if the Fierce V's upgrades of the CNC Gear Technology and closed aluminum spool from the previous generation and its full metal body and 25 lb max drag compared to the Pursuit V's graphite composite body and 20 lb max drag are worth it for my girlfriend.

I legitimately thought this was a small Albie. They come bigger, but a 3+ lb Spanish from the surf was a really fun fight, surprisingly so. The fact that she filmed it for me makes me even more proud of my woman lol.

Hey everyone!
Iām looking to invest in one good-quality rod and reel setup with a budget of up to $1,200 for the combo. Iād rather buy something reliable and well-built that I can use for years than buy multiple setups right away.
Iām mainly planning to fish along the New York and New Jersey coasts, but Iād also like to use the same setup when visiting Florida.
Ideally, Iām looking for something versatile enough to handle different fishing situations, including
Live bait for surf fishing, and Lures.
Different beaches, surf conditions, and fishing spots in NY/NJ, with the flexibility to use it in Florida as well.
I realize there may be trade-offs when trying to cover everything with one setup, but Iād like to get as close as possible to an all-around option without sacrificing too much in performance.
What rod length, power, action, reel size, and specific models would you recommend? Iām open to both spinning and conventional setups, although Iām leaning toward whatever would be the most practical and versatile for my needs.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Iām split between getting the gosa and the TP, I know the gosa is a tried and true reel but the lighter and more refined Twinpower is calling me name, it has a better color scheme as well. Should I just buy the gosa or save up for a Twinpower if itās worth it? Iām aiming for a 6000 size to pair it up on a 9ft rod to launch some plugs

Iām fishing down at the Jersey Shore this weekend and was wondering if the fish have migrated down to the surf here yet. If so does anyone have any recommendations of which beach tends to be better for fishing?
r/SurfFishing • u/leung19 • 4d ago
For the background info, I will only use this wader a few times a year. It needs to be easily packed in my luggage. It looks like a stock foot would work better for transportation, but I am worried about sand getting in.
But a boot foot looks to be very difficult to pack in luggage.
Also, if I go with stocking-foot waders, what lightweight shoe option do you recommend? I need to have all my gear in one piece of luggage, including my rods, reels, sand spike, etc.
I currently wear Crocs and take them off at the beach; sometimes I bring rain boots if the water is too cold.
