Request for help Steam

I got a question a online Friend told me to redeem a steam code on my steam acc but i feel like its kinda sktechy can i get hacked when i redeem the code and not click any links?

If they are sending you a straight code and not going giving you a link to the code you should be fine. But did they say why they were giving you this code?

I know I've given friends codes from things like Humble Bundle and such I've had duplicates of but I believe worst case if they got the key from a sketchy site and steam might revoke the key and you lose access to that game.

is it an actual keycode? or a link to where a code is supposed to be?

You can't be hacked by pasting into the "Activate a Product on Steam" field... ... ...unless the game itself was compromised, and we have had that happen a couple of times...

You could redeem the code, then not download the game until you look it up and make sure it's not some Steam Greenlight Early Access game that hasn't been touched in 15 years except for a 100kb update 2 days ago.

well i jst used it and it was a game resident evil 5 so i think im good

if there's no actual reason to activate this code (cant think of any) dont. Theyve most probably been hacked, and the hacker is trying to broaden his attack to friends accounts.

If you really need to redeem the code, ensure you get it in plain text, not through a link. If you get asked for your credentials, to disable authenticator, or anything else that's not "here's the code: aabbccdd", dont comply.
