I do get a feeling that the reason we didn't have good open source options was because people didn't want to get associated with what >90% of a VR video player use is... Good luck on doing Lilith's work, can't wait to see it come to fruition! Feel free to post a GoFundMe or something if you need help with the funds to put it on Steam (although IIRC the fees are fairly low)

Use it for whatever you want :P Like VLC or ffmpeg developers care what their software is used for! Not my first bout in FOSS so bring it :)
if you need help with the funds to put it on Steam
Lol, it's like $99, easy :) I'll probably provide a "supporter" edition via Steam, and free downloads via Itch, so basically if you want to support + get convenience, Steam version will be there, otherwise downloading and installing manually via Itch will still be there too.

Keep going. As long as Lepton doesn't support hardware decode, we're going to need a native arm64 solution.

u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Thanks! I'm pretty confident that regardless of that, having one application specifically written for the Frame hardware (both headset and controllers) and software, will be able to create an overall better experience on many fronts, compared to other existing VR video players :)

TempleOS edition is next up once the Steam Frame implementation is completed, of course.

Great work, got it installed on my unit just to try briefly.
I wanted to clarify the installation steps for installing directly on the Steam Frame:
Open Steam’s desktop client and choose Games → Add a Non-Steam Game → Browse. Select matineevr from the extracted folder and add it.
I'm not able to open like a Steam client window within the desktop on the Steam Frame, nothing seems to happen when I launch it. What I did instead was add as non-steam game by right clicking (click on thumbstick) and it's an option in the conext menu which then shows in the library.
Did you mean this as the step?
In the shortcut’s Properties → Compatibility, leave forced compatibility tools disabled.
I could not find "forced compatibility tools".
I'm assuming you meant Properties -> compatibility -> default?

u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Yeah, it's a big hassle to install right now from standalone, compared to from desktop to the device. I'm currently revamping the on-Frame installation experience, will be much better in a short moment, stay tuned! :)
1
u/NewCampaign 17d ago
nah it's not that bad from standalone, I just wanted to ask these to make sure those shouldve been the steps
2
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Want to try the latest 0.0.9 available here? https://embedding-shapes.itch.io/matineevr
It has a install.py script you can double-click, and that should be enough to install it :)
1
u/NewCampaign 17d ago
For future updates, will the python script also handle it? I remember seeing something about updates on the page but I think it got removed
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Yup, should handle with no sweat :) To start using a new version, download the archive, extract and run the setup.py from the new directory, and old Steam shortcut gets updated instead of now having two shortcuts!
In the future I suppose the Steam version will make it even easier, as it'll have auto-updates!

u/VapidLinus Soon™ 17d ago
Yeah I've also noticed it's not possible to open Steam from the desktop environment when I was trying to install Clone Hero. I also ended up having to right-click it and add it that way. Strange that we can't open Steam
2
u/NewCampaign 17d ago
I guess maybe cuz it's technically already opened, it's what you're using to view it. Different than Steam Deck

I can't wait to try this when I get my Frame. Thank you for this.

u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
I can't wait for you to get your Frame so you can try this too! :D No worries, let me know what could be done better! :)

Is the Steam VR Media Player not working on the Steam Frame? https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/250820/view/2898585530113876153
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Maybe in the future? I'm not able to find it anywhere inside of the UI at least.

u/VespBot 17d ago
any chance of adding passthrough?
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
If there is enough interest, anything is possible! I don't have any passthrough videos myself, and still waiting for my Arcturus camera, but once I receive any video samples (send via PM if you can, can be seconds short) and the camera, and there is enough interest, I can give it a shot! :)

u/VespBot 17d ago
great!, the current biggest issue is the frame cant provide passthrough when in steam streaming mode, so using all the current VR players via stream to a PC does not allow passthrough but as your player is native it should allow it.
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Yeah, the hardware seems suitable (with the extra camera) and MatineeVR runs like a dream currently, so I don't see any impossibilities with it, besides I don't have any videos to test with and I'm not sure enough people want it to justify the time spent adding support :P But, with both, I'll happily give it a try!
1
u/Svenare Soon™ 17d ago
Does it support MVC 3d files?
2
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago edited 17d ago
No, but definitely interested in supporting it in the future (unsure if hardware decoding is doable though, might not), I guess earlier if there is lots of people wanting support for it!
1
u/aaroncledge 17d ago
That would be awesome! MVC 3d would be the number 1 feature for me. I don't have a Frame yet though, so take your time. ;)
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Would really help a lot if you sent me a sample file via chat/PM or something, even just a few seconds would be very helpful to be able to support it the best!
1
u/Mamushi- 14d ago
Seconding this request as it is something I would like too. It may be a difficult ask though as ffmpeg does not currently support the format.
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 14d ago
Yeah, we'll see what could be done, I'm not sure, not a ton of options available for hardware decoding with the Iris decoder here sadly. I did find a software decoder (https://github.com/jens-duttke/edge264-mvc) that seems to be able to do GPU rendering, has multithreading and uses ARM NEON which might be interesting to see how it performs.
Time will tell :)

u/Trussyy 16d ago
Anyway to view SMB file share folders?
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 16d ago
Mount them with 'mount' or some other Linux utility/app, and browse to the directory in MantineeVR and it should just work :)

Will this support spatial audio / surround sound? edit: i realize this might be designed for 360 video, so my question is expanded to wonder about SBS video within a rectangular viewport
2
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 16d ago
Yeah, this seems doable and supported by the hardware! We'd route surround audio through Valve’s spatializer essentially, then it'd become virtual surround through the stereo speakers if I understand it correctly. Right now I'm just downmixing everything to stereo, but I'll add this as a task to do, thanks a bunch for the idea, feedback and input! :)
1
u/sunshinestreak WAITLISTED 16d ago
Hell. Yes. Spatial audio is the one thing I haven't experienced yet in other VR video apps
1
u/zoglhaha 13d ago
after running the setup.py, i do see it in the steam interface. However, it doesn't do anything when i try to launch it. any idea?
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 13d ago
I think you're the second person to mention this, is this the 0.0.10 release of MatineeVR you're on, and what SteamOS version are you on currently, the Beta channel?
Looking into it right now.
1
u/zoglhaha 13d ago
Thanks for being so quick! Yeah, i am on the 0.010 version, and i just got the latest steam frame beta software. I just got the steam frame today :). Anyway, i did enable developer mode (but only after it failed the first time and told me to enable it). Have not set a password or anything else. Only have balatro and firefox installed for now, as my internet is slow and my pc is downloading alyx. If there is any other info you need, please let me know!
1
u/zoglhaha 13d ago
also i tried that gantry software but it keeps crashing my entire steam vr layer lol.

u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 13d ago edited 13d ago
Can you try the previous 0.0.9 release and see if that works? https://embedding-shapes.itch.io/matineevr/devlog/1680261/009-easier-on-frame-installs Download, extract and re-run the setup.py from that new directory, then launching it from SteamOS dashboard.
Edit: If it's possible, and not too much to ask for, could you possible send me logs from
/home/steamos/.local/share/Steam/logs/on the Steam Frame? It should have a clear reason for why it crashed on startup. There should be axrclient_matineevr.txtfile in there that would be the best, but alsosteam_output.log,gameprocess_log.txt,vrserver.txtandvrcompositor.txtwould be helpful to receive! You can send a link via PM or something if you're not comfortable sharing publicly, receiving these would make it a lot easier for me to track down what has gone wrong!1
u/zoglhaha 13d ago
when i try to download it it just downloads the latest one anyways, so i cannot really do that
1
u/zoglhaha 13d ago
Also, i couldnt fiend xrclient_matineevr, but ill send you the other logs over dm
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 12d ago
Awesome, got them, read them through, and now we know exactly what the issue is!
You're missing to first extract the archive, then run the setup.py from that extracted path. It seems you're either double-clicking on the .zip file, or something else, so the SteamOS shortcut ends up using a temporary path, instead of a static path. When you try to launch it in Steam, that temporary extraction point won't exists any longer.
Fix: fully extract the ZIP into a permanent folder, then run install.py from that extracted folder to update the shortcut. After doing this, it should work! :)

Installed and used 0.0.10 on my frame through RDP from Windows and it was really easy. Its still early in development but it just works. The file select menu is a bit hard to use since its moving with your headset.
Thank you very much!

u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 12d ago
The file select menu is a bit hard to use since its moving with your headset.
Yeah, new version which is ready any time now will include configuration for addressing this!
Thanks, and thanks a bunch for giving it a try and reporting back, glad it was easy enough! :)

u/egregors 11d ago
Holy moly, it just works! I spend about 2 days to find the way just play BIG vr videos, and this one is the first one which is actually works. Thanks man!
1
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 11d ago
NICE! Yeah, the ones I tried initially didn't work any well either, so here we are! :D Glad you found it useful!

u/xamindar 11d ago
Is there a github or gitlab link for this open source project? A place we can see and submit issues and PRs?
2
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 11d ago
No, the source is delivered to you via the same .zip file as you find the binary in :)
I expanded a bit more on why here: https://old.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1wsxvz6/matineevr_0010_vulkan_rendering_fisheye_flat_3d/pcvl38h/

Hey nice work. Can you specificy if some of it is vibe-coded through AI or not?
7
u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
It's disclosed on the Itch page already! :) Says "AI Disclosure: AI Assisted, Code" there, but to expand further since you asked:
Nothing is "vibe-coded" in the sense that I'm running some sort of "software factory" that automatically produce all the code and it just releases whatever it comes up with. My process is to work side-by-side with a LLM to bounce ideas, help read documentation and browse code, then we essentially pair program together and I review the code as we iterate on it, based on my design/architecture, and finally I'm the only one who tests and verifies that everything was implemented correctly and works in the Frame itself.
TLDR: Developed with the help of AI? Yes, as a pair-programming tool, everything initiated and driven by me. Vibe-coded without a single glance of the code? Nope, I take too much pride in my output as a software developer to do anything like that.

u/Balthxzar 1 TB 15d ago
Wonderful, thanks for clearing that up, IMO this is one of the best possible uses for AI (and most people don't realise a good proportion of IDEs etc had features like this before the AI boom)
When my frame gets here I'm really interested in trying it out

u/YouKilledApollo 1 TB 17d ago
Shaping up to become something actually usable, which is nice to see :) I'd be happy to hear any sort of feedback, good or bad or ridiculous or just pure hatred (if that floats your boat), love to hear what people think! :)
