Question Thoughts on upgrading my deck

So I had my deck since release I preordered it when they were still in early launch. Love my deck works perfectly no issues. It's the original lcd.

I'm wondering if a new version would work better with games, do they have a better graphics card, motherboard and processors? Would it be worth the money to buy a brand new one or are they just slightly different with no real benefits compared to the original. I do know they have OLED screens. But I'm not very techy so that's the reason I ask

Ehh. If you have a perfectly good LCD, its not really worth the upgrade especially with the prices.

My coworkers have the OLED and I have the LCD. It’s not worth the upgrade. It’s marginally better looking, but the exact same deck otherwise.

to be fair... not the exact same. the oled gets better battery life, better temps, a little more overhead for overclockong if that's you're thing. the screen is a little bigger in size, and there's always the whole bit where oled just looks fantastic and if you're looking at them side by side the oled is the very clear winner in picture quality. plus the oled has wifi 6e and supports the 6ghz band, which if you have a router for it can give better performance when streaming

I also have the LCD. Up until which price point would you say "yes, the upgrade to OLED makes sense"? Effectively saying "more expensive than that and you're getting a bad deal".

It basically never makes sense. Unless you really, really care about the better and slightly bigger screen. And what you think you can resell your LCD for.

I'm guessing I could sell me LCD for $700-800 CAD. A new 1tb OLED is $1350 CAD. It's that very minor bump in performance and better screen worth ~$600 CAD? Nope. Not even a little.

I see. I have adjusted the Steam colour settings and also added Vibrant deck, so at least my LCD is miles ahead of what it was at stock. Maybe indeed makes sense to just enjoy what I have and save up for Steam Deck 2.

I will always be bitter at Valve for the rug they pulled on us LCD OGs😅

What rug pull??? It was 1.5 years later that they released the OLED. And well over a year after I got my LCD. And I wouldn't give up that full year of gaming. I played literally hundreds of hours in that year. That I would have never played otherwise.

Well I cannot see it like this. It was not a change in CPU so they could have done the screen and the battery from the get go. Instead , I was stuck with two options:

1) Sell the LCD at a steep discount and buy the OLED, meaning my total cost of 1x Steam Deck would be much higher than someone who only bought the OLED.

2) Stick with the LCD which i eventually had to do , if I wanted to remain financially responsible.

I would be ok with a new model 1.5 year later only if it was coming with a new chipset.

it's moderately faster but almost imperceptibly so. you can treat the oled steam deck as the same, but with a nicer screen and better battery life.

It's lighter which is also a plus

oled is like 2% better raw power wise just because the chip is more efficient

All the people here we love Steam Deck. I was changed LCD by OLED at launch only for the love to the machine. But now the price and the long wait for a future SD2 and the high price you can expect for the SD2 make me buy a great deal by Lenovo Legion go z1 extreme 32 GB Ram for 750 euro. I dont sell my SD Oled but enjoy the lenovo with STEAMOS and my SD. They are different approach, but the second USB port and the connectivity with EGPU and 25 W TPD are a game changer.
