Hardware Repair Is my battery cooked?
Noticed a strange curvature on the back side of my deck yesterday, immediately shut off and just opened it up. Is my battery cooked?

Take it out ASAP if it doesn’t kill any warranty. Find a replacement online and make sure it’s the 41w. Sometimes people get a cheaper one and it ends up not being correct so just price compare.

That said, good luck getting this sucker out. I caught mine on fire trying to pry it for an hour, even with plastic tools.

Wow, really sorry, did it destroy you device? And how did you stop the fire?
22
u/J_ron Jul 02 '26
It did, but fortunately just before they went out of stock in January, so I was able to get a new one and salvage a good chunk of the parts. Moving forward I just never charge past 80% unless I'm leaving the house with it.
32
u/Ab0ut47Pandas 512GB Jul 02 '26
Just for anyone reading this-- Charging to 80 does increase battery health- and only partly accurate for preventing bulging.
charging to 80 percent reduces stress on the cells, because a high state of change means higher cell voltage and that accelerates chemical aging.
but bulging is not simply charging past 80 percent all the time. Heat, age, defects, over discharge, bad charging conditions, or even using/charging above 35 c can damage battery capacity and also push it closer to bulging.
4
u/J_ron Jul 02 '26
Yeah sorry, my problem wasn't bulging, just battery life. Its max % was at 38% after 2 years.

Whoa..... X_X That is fkn brutal. My god, that is extreme. That battery was cooked before it left the warehouse it was manufactured in.
You do mean it lost 62% of its original battery use yeah? What a pathetic little lithium raisen. whats that... 40wh x .38. 15.2 wh? Jeez

Obviously not the same battery.8
u/donkeyrocket 256GB Jul 02 '26
Terrifying. Incredibly lucky they could put it out and it was in the cabin, not checked bag.

u/xmBQWugdxjaA Jul 02 '26
Hold luggage in theory all have fire suppression. That said the one case where lithium batteries caused a disaster was on a cargo flight.

Yes. Same thing happened to mine recently. I have an lcd version. Contact steam. Even if it’s out of warranty they may still replace it for you

Had this happen to me a little over a week ago. Sent it to Valve for rma. It was out of vartanty but they offered to replace it for free!

3
u/Practical-Database-6 512GB OLED Jul 02 '26
If you send it by rma is it not risky by shipping it?
3
u/kazesh Jul 02 '26
I've shipped mine before for a repair. Their prices are pretty fair depending on the severity of the fix needed. Only paid around 150 iirc for a few fixes.
5
u/Practical-Database-6 512GB OLED Jul 02 '26
Oh neat! I was thinking in the context of a spicy pillow, could it blow up in shipping?
6
u/cryst_dmp Jul 03 '26
did an rma before. they gave me a huge box to pack it in filled with vermiculite so it was not that dangerous.
2
u/kazesh Jul 02 '26
That is interesting. I've never had the battery issue before, but that possibility is definitely not zero in OP's case. Depends on what Valve support says on this issue. They might have OP ship it as is (I would most likely believe) or take it apart first then ship for replacement.
3
u/Bnnanna Jul 03 '26
As cryst_dmp said, they sent me a box with vermiculite, an already paid for shipping label and specific instuctions on how to pack it.

The battery is failing but it hasn't completely failed. It is still hold a charge just not as well The problem is is that once it reaches this point each time you recharge it you're basically rolling the dice for something more catastrophic.
2
u/HankLard Jul 02 '26
How does it get to this point? Or is it just passage of time? I want to avoid this at all costs.
7
u/nord2rocks Jul 02 '26
Kind of random but there are factors that can cause it. Make sure you keep it within normal room temp, don't block the vents, set a charge limit (doesn't need to be at 100% all the time), charge it before it gets below 20%.
This applies to any Lithium batteries you have - computer, phone, charging bank
The swelling are vapors from the battery

That’s one of the spiciest pillows I’ve ever seen, I doubt that thing has even 5 more charge cycles left on it before it blows lol
7
u/Manixx0 Jul 02 '26
Yeah I'd look at getting that sorted. Even if it's not an imminent threat at the moment it certainly isn't gonna get any better

Contact steam support and stop using it. You just might get a free battery replacement or cheaper than replacing it yourself(and damaging the unit itself).

Yes, cooked. It’s a literal time bomb. Continuing to use or charge a swollen lithium battery puts you at a severe risk of fire, explosion, and toxic gas exposure. Swelling indicates trapped gases from a degrading internal structure. Charging or using it adds heat and stress, potentially causing a rupture, ignition or toxic exposure. Wear full ppe and back up your saves regularly and your golden

I don't understand how people's batteries are going like this in such a short space of time. I've had devices for over a decade that haven't done anything like this. Is it something to do with the newer style batteries?

The toothpick test should work. If you stab it with a toothpick and you don't die, it's probably fine. You'll need to fix the hole though.

Paid up health and fire insurance, bucket of sand, welders gloves, fine needle, Kapton tape, and a wild sense of adventure would be the definitely DO NOT do this ill advised attempt at a sketchy cosmetic and "case fit only" modification that is unsafe and does not address the source of the problem... Save up and order a new a new battery ( ? IFIXIT ? ) is the way to go...
