Discussion What's the game you're playing First with the Steam Controller 2.0?
86
u/DwarvenCo Feb 03 '26
Probably Aperture Desk Job... have barely held a game controller in my life, so might need to upskill myself.
14
u/Technical-Paper3882 Feb 03 '26
would that work? Haven't seen gameplay but its steam deck demo, touchscreen stuff?
5
u/DwarvenCo Feb 03 '26
I assume it would. Save for the touchscreen it should know everything that the deck's inputs know, so unless there is a necessary touchscreen part of it that Valve does not want to modify for it, I think it should.

The game already supports being played by a normal controller, because they knew people would want to give it a try just because portal is awesome.

u/Waste_Ad_7945 Feb 03 '26
It works with any controller, it just skips the part where it wants you to tap the back buttons and stuff if you don't have those (like on an Xbox controller)

u/kleovic Feb 03 '26
Valve did an interview with the youtuber SkillUp and they made passing mention that they'll probably update Aperture Desk Job for the new controller.

Elite Dangerous, I couldn't make the Steam Controller 1 work for me using only one joystick.
6
u/bc_odds Steam Controller (Dead) Feb 03 '26
ED for me too! I actually started playing it with the S1 and exclusively played it like that until it broke down ~2 years ago. Tried replacing my SC with the Dualsense but that got stick drift in a few months so I had to contend with the horrors of mouse and keyboard lol.

u/Exodard Feb 03 '26
Yep, I bought a Dualsense Edge and it works very well, except that I cannot grip it as I would like (use Bumpers and triggers at the same time, and the back paddles leaves only the little finger to hold the controller, and it is too slippery).
So I wonder if the SC 2 will fit my hands better... But I would then loose the advantages of the Dualsense: the HD haptics and the adaptive triggers.

It’s incredible on the steam deck. Smooth as butter 60-90 fps on high/ultra. Everything is readable, and the devs made controller support very decent. Obviously you want to tweak it a bit, but they built a decent settings menu and base layout. You can even bind “double inputs”like using L1 + B for supercruise.

Dishonored, where I will be absolutely amazed and happily eat my words if it is anywhere near as comfortable as the OG controller. I am already pretty confident that it will be great in a game like Elite Dangerous, though.

u/lululock Feb 03 '26
No Man's Sky.
I'm playing on my Steam Deck but I'd love to play on my 4K OLED but I just can't aim with joysticks only... So I'm waiting...

u/jojo_and_the_jojos Steam Controller (Windows) Feb 03 '26
Probably a heavily modded skyrim and/or fallout 4. All those mods that add extra features needing special hotkeys. And of course arc raiders.
2
u/DaryltheRigger Feb 03 '26
Skyrim was so good modded with SC1. I’m a huge fan of the track pads and I feel like I’ll be losing a lot of functionality not having them as primaries.
My track pad functioned as camera and 8 buttons simultaneously. I didn’t even use the joystick for movement, it was literally just a wheel menu for all the mod sub-menus.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Dolphin or Yuzu. Wanna see if I can get the gyro working straight away to collect them bits! After that, it's going to be Doom Eternal to really put the gyro through its paces. Already have gyro bound to grip on my dualsense (with conductive tape) to train my muscle memory.
7
u/dualpad Steam Controller (2015) | Steam Controller (2026) Feb 03 '26
Left 4 Dead 2 to test how the touchpads hold up for using as primary inputs used for movement and quickly turning the camera. The touchpads are the only inputs I care about, so it's pretty much going to determine whether I'll like it or not.
If ergonomics matches the level of using the Steam Controller (2015) then testing it out in The Finals. I didn't find the Steam Deck touchpads usable for extended use with it causing my hands to cramp up, so that's my main area of concern. Whether this will be a good dual touchpad replacement from the Steam Controller (2015) or another collection to add to my dual joystick controllers I already have.
2
u/raw_bean_uk Feb 07 '26
Similar story for me, but it'll probably be Destiny 2. Original Steam Controller has been great for D2. Not so much the Deck (although dual booting into Windows to be able to play it with crappy performance, or streaming it to the Deck both probably contributed to the poor feeling, as well as the trackpad placement).

Pretty much all fps/shooting games I haven't played yet because I can't stand aiming with a stick, but I really like the trackpads on my deck and gyro helps. So cyberpunk, kcd, mass effect, etc

PoE2 in WASD to see if it compares to SC1. I doubt I will switch over as I am an avid user of the dual track pad and not a fan of joysticks.
Pads look like they are hard to play with.

I’ll try some 2D fighters and platformers. I’m curious if the D-pad will need broken in the same way the Deck OLED one did. It felt awful for the first couple months. It’s great now that it’s broken in though.
I also want to use it as a multimedia remote to control my desktop streamed to the living room TV.
I really want this controller to be my “everything” controller. (Other than shooters. I’m a KBM man)

u/GetVladimir Feb 03 '26
I don't know if first, but I want to check how some mouse only strategy games would work.
They already work pretty decent with the Controller to Mouse overlays from Steam, but it would be even better with the Steam Controller

Cyberpunk 2077 and Arknights Endfield.
I've been using 3rd party addon hardware for the xbox controller to be able to use gyro with it, but it's been very janky.
In Endfield I wanna see how it handles all the million functions and controls. Maybe I can figure out a way to use it in a Kb/M configuration where I still have smooth analogue movement, since the game for some reason doesn't have fluid Kb/M and Controller switching. It always does a 1 second mini restart where everything closes for a second and the UI changes, and you get asked if you want to switch inputs, which is super annoying.
I basically just want Controller style controls, but with a mouse cursor on demand, instead of having to click or switch through all the on screen elements in the menu.
And of course, most importantly, I want trackpad camera and aiming controls, or Gyro.

Rocket League. It's the only game I didn't like on the first Steam Controller, and it's the main game I play, so that was a major point of friction.

Probably Portal/Portal 2. When I played the game on switch, I really enjoyed the motion controls, but my xbox controller doesn’t have those functions. Playing it on steam deck, the one thing I disliked was the motion control sensor, ‘cause that messed with my adjustments and I didn’t feel like I could properly hold the deck while relying on those motion controls. I know you can just turn it fully on or off, but it just doesn’t feel right to me while handheld 😭

At this point nothing because valve won't release it for some reason and they refuse to elaborate beyond "the frame and steam machine aren't ready so we're gonna delay all 3 for kicks" they never should have announced any of them if they weren't ready. Hype is 1 thing but this is just stupid. Months of dead silence from them and the first time we hear anything it's extremely vague and also a delay? And then we immediately get conflicting reports from AMD on the same damn day?
The PR department is failing hard! And they all need to get as transparent as possible real soon before the hype turns to apathy. At the bare minimum they need to clearly explain to us wtf is actually going on so we can at least plan for the future release.
A firm price on the controller would be a great show of faith. Even better would be a price and pre order period with a release date. (preferably before the spring sale)
Honestly anything would be better than the absolute nothing we have gotten so far, beyond leaks and speculation that have no backbone.
The dream scenario would be a release of the controller first, to give us all something new to play with while we wait for the main hardware to drop later in the year(no later than June). Drop the controller right before the spring sale in mid/late March. But give us the pre order ASAP.

probably kingdom hearts 2, sure maybe not the best showcase of the benefits of the controller but i cannot begin to express just how much better the game feels when the command deck is mapped to a 4 way dpad mode right touchpad, no need to remember to pull a trigger to switch the right stick from camera controls it's just right there when you need it

Monster Hunter Wilds. That game really makes you use gyro and paddles (especially on Insect Glaive).
It has very good native gyro support.
I also want to bind a trackpad to the item wheel if that's possible. Normally they're only available through LB + right stick.

Stardew Valley. The game plays great on the Steam Deck, but it benefits a lot from high resolution because you can zoom out more. And the track pads are great for this game. I will get my 100% achievement badge from this game when I get this controller.
I will actually use it with the Steam Deck docked in this game.

Exanima. It plays damn well on the Steam Deck, and i can't wait to play it relaxing on my computer with the controller. The game is way beyond easier with the trackpad and using the left thumb stick to move compared to using mouse and keyboard. I was blown away when I first got the Steam Deck and seen it was approved for the Steam Deck.

Pretty much any TPS / action game that has aiming (TLOU, ME2, etc). As a couch PC gamer I prefer controller but my aim with the control stick is atrocious. I want to use gyro when the aim button is pressed to fine tune my aim. For hardcore FPS I'll probably stick with my TV tray + KBM setup.

u/Believeinsteve Feb 03 '26
Elden ring. Its been my benchmark for a comfortable controller for me as I strictly use the right or one of the right back buttons for the B button so I can run while also controlling the camera. If its not comfy doing that I usually drop the controller, so far nothing has quite beat the elite series 2 but it fails in other ways. I'm hoping the steam controller succeeds in every way.

u/Lara_0925 Feb 03 '26
World of Warcraft, probably. It’s the only game that comes to mind that is able to push the controller to the limits of its capabilities. Trackpad - Gyro to mouse trying to navigate the game and the entire MMORPG menu interface, using all the modifiers, mode shifts in order to bind 30-40 spells and abilities to buttons.

A fighting game to see what the d-pad is like. It looks a little sus. Then, a mouse based game like Portal to test the track pads. I'm definitely going to play mouse based games on my main PC still, but I'll at least try it. If it doesn't pass the test, I'll probably stick with the Xbox Series X controller. I just hope it's user friendly on the Steam Machine outside of powering on the device.

Minecraft, it's a pretty solid test of what the steam controller is capable of and I'll want to see how it feels for a long building session. Hoping it feels at least as good as sc1 but I love that thing and it's gonna be hard to topple the king of my heart

I used to really enjoy doing Warframe not just on PC controls but on the SC way more than the regular pads the gyro and other stuff was a game changer. Though, DE has toyed around with steam input trying to 'fix' things in more recent history and broke more than they fixed, so I'm not sure I can actually mix mouse into pad with that and have it work right anymore.
My two SC1s have been on the fritz for a while now and each one has something a bit off with it so I only play fairly basic games on them at this point, but definitely would see if I could give that another try if I thought I was gonna have an SC2 at launch. Would love to but doubt I will have the bucks to do it

no man's sky. touch pad on the menus, gyro for aiming, analog trigger for both flying the ship and incrementing speed at the last part of the trigger, and if possible, pause the game when i take my hands off the controller.
