Wait steam has streaming and a recording tool???

35

u/Vici0usRapt0r 10h ago

You can even stream and play from your own computer onto your TV or smartphone if you want. It's the Steam Link. Performances are a bit finicky though but it's getting there.

u/GrandmasterTactician 10h ago

I've used steam link to play Granblue Fantasy Relink before lol it's great

5

u/dr4kshdw 9h ago

Don’t mind me as I play DD2 on my phone.

2

u/schweddyballsac 8h ago

I’ve done this too, but with a bluetooth controller connected

2

u/IndicaPapiGaming 5h ago

300 hours in project zomboid from my phone when my daughter was in the hospital. Thank you steam

2

u/Vici0usRapt0r 5h ago

Bruh that's crazy. Hope your daughter is okay btw.

2

u/IndicaPapiGaming 4h ago

She is! Spent 4 months in nortons children’s in Louisville ky. when she was born, because she was born 14 weeks early. But she’s a healthy 4 year old chaos gremlin now lol. Thanks!

2

u/senindekorundan 4h ago

does the 4 years counts the premature 14 week? or she is 3 years 9 months old

2

u/IndicaPapiGaming 4h ago

Counting. She was born 07/07/2022. She was due 10/13/2022

Metroid Zero Mission got me through the 53 hours it took from my wife being induced to my daughter being born.  I was really good at speed running it for a bit.

1

u/GrandmasterTactician 8h ago

Same, the button layout on my screen would distract me I feel

2

u/schweddyballsac 8h ago

That and my fat fingers couldn’t possibly find the precision to hit the correct shoulder buttons

1

u/Sw00p10 7h ago

Criminally slept on game

2

u/Lasers4Everyone 10h ago

I got a dongle that lets me connect an HDMI cable, a USB controller, and a charger to my phone all at once. I've played through Dragons Dogma 1 and 2 and a bunch of Crimson Desert that way.

2

u/the_axemurmurer 9h ago

I stream to my Retroid Pocket 6, absolute best setup for portable PC gaming outside the Steam Deck (and a lot smaller).

2

u/donmuerte 10h ago

my AndroidTV can install the Steam Link app from the Play store and connect a controller via Bluetooth. It runs fine for me.

1

u/Vici0usRapt0r 5h ago

Yeah I did that but the performance were crap, like unplayable. Much better on my phone though, I might have to tinker with it a bit more.

1

u/lemonylol 8h ago

Then you should run Moonlight/Sunshine instead. Gamestream is significantly better bitrate and lower input delay than Steam's version.

2

u/Somepotato 6h ago

With pyrowave, Steam blows moonlight and sunshine out of the water.

0

u/lemonylol 4h ago

I'm sorry I wasn't up to date on a month old software

1

u/catwhowalksbyhimself 5h ago

I think they meant the other type of streaming, but it's hard to tell. Either way, Steam has both.

1

u/theBarra 4h ago

I use steam link to play slay the spire 2 when im in bed.

1

u/Adaphion 3h ago

I like using it to play couch co-op games with my gf. Give her my Steam Deck while I play off the main screen. A lot less latency than using the online "play together" feature for couch co-ops.

1

u/1d3333 39m ago

Have you used it recently? I don’t even notice input lag anymore over wifi, over ethernet is pretty much perfect anymore. Sometimes I just steam link my laptop to go be lazy on the couch

19

u/Visible-Reality2492 10h ago

Yeah it’s neat

1

u/GrandmasterTactician 10h ago

How do you do that?

6

u/Academic-Proof3700 10h ago

Shift tab, settings, recording

1

u/GrandmasterTactician 10h ago

Ty!

3

u/LogComp 9h ago

I use it for my content!! It's awesome I swapped over from OBS and use steam record for clipping.

1

u/MarcusTomato 8h ago

So Steam just integrated a feature you had to use a 3rd party app for?

That's the opposite of what Sony and MS do, they love farming features out so they don't have to do jack shit themselves. Gives them scapegoats for days, too.

1

u/LogComp 7h ago

Idk what the point of your reply is

0

u/Suitable-End- 7h ago

You mean fucking garbage.

1

u/nugs-_- 7h ago

Well its garbage but its like your only option on mac and its okay ig

0

u/LogComp 4h ago

What specifically is wrong with the recording feature? In your opinion.

1

u/Suitable-End- 4h ago

Lack of basic features that even Xbox had for almost a decade.

There has been input lag caused by its built in screen recorder that still hasn't been fully fixed.

OBS is used by anyone that wants to use screen recording. Steam recording might be good for users on inferior OSs like Linux or MacOS.

0

u/LogComp 1h ago

Interesting, I don't have any input delay and I can create clips very easy, what features specifically? OBS clipping had been far more finicky for me.

8

u/Kamzil118 10h ago

Yep, I used a good chunk of it to record my gaming sessions.

The max is 120 minutes. If it also helps, you can get OBS on Steam for free.

4

u/aggravated_patty 10h ago

It’s very useful, replaced Shadowplay for me

5

u/Lesschar 10h ago

For some games (more so their own cs and dotas, maybe others) it can even time stamp events for you like kills, etc.

3

u/M4rt1m_40675 10h ago

I mostly use the record feature for clips but it even lets you record all audio from your pc

1

u/Crashman09 10h ago

The streaming feature is great!

Playing games at max settings, high fps, raytracing, and hdr on my OLED 120 hz phone in a grip is awesome.

Battery life, display, weight, and thermals all better than a steam deck, quality and game support better than game native.

1

u/Dogstile 10h ago

Yeah its great, it autorecords a couple hours for me so if there's a cool thing I wanna show someone I can usually find it and snip it out/send it over.

1

u/biosim500 10h ago

Yep, and its light.

1

u/SalesmanWaldo 10h ago

My controller opens the recording tool by default on a hotkey and it keeps messing up my hollow knight boss fights because it lags the input for like a second and a half. Most other games I play a second and a half isn't a huge deal.

1

u/Reasonable-Dingo2199 10h ago

The recording tool is new you have to go to settings and turn it on

1

u/ThekillerguyYT 10h ago

yeah I've been using the recording device to save funny clips, it doesn't take much performance and just records the last 3 hours of current gameplay, it's a lot more nifty then game bar and easier then stuff like OBS, it just records in the background, obviously you can record normally too

1

u/GearboxTheGrey 9h ago

Mine is setup to capture the last hour of game play. I can hit shift tab and go back and watch it and grab clips.

At work I just pull up steam link and play a controller friendly game.

1

u/vegetarian_ejaculate 9h ago

For a long time. The reason why you don’t hear about it is because it’s meh as fuck. I’m sure someone will chime in with an “actushuallly” to my comment though.

1

u/Hi-man1372 9h ago

Yeah you can set it to stream only to friends and they can just pop in and watch randomly. People watch more than you’d think.

1

u/Girthmasterlite 9h ago

Steam legit has a fuckton of features

1

u/Aknazer 9h ago

Steam Link is over a decade old by now. I used to stream Doom 2016 to my TV so that my kids could watch instead of crowding around my laptop. I'd boot up the game and next thing I'd know I had a kid on each side and a third hanging on the back of the couch so that they could all watch. Steam Link to the TV and problem solved.

I wasn't a fan of it, but I also had the OG Steam Controller and could have left my laptop on my computer desk, had it stream to the TV, and used my Steam Controller (or really any wireless controller given where my laptop was) while playing on my couch.

1

u/aVarangian 9h ago

the only thing missing from Steam is a kettle

1

u/igotshadowbaned 9h ago

Yeah youve been able to stream what you're playing for friends to watch through steam for at least as long as I've been using it, which is at least 14 years

1

u/TheTerrasque 8h ago

Steam has everything

1

u/KickBass2155 8h ago

Hello fellow caveman how is winter

1

u/bassbeater 8h ago

You have to enable it and of course if you turn it on it will use more resources.

1

u/Moose_0327 8h ago

You can even stream couch co-op games for someone to play split screen with you online (for games Steam supports it on)

1

u/Accomplished-Lack721 8h ago

Steam's in-built streaming has never been quite as good as the various Sunshine/Moonlight versions/forks/reimplementations (or GeForce Experience before them), but it's been a viable option for a long time. And they've recently made several notable improvements (probably to support a better experience on the Steam Frame and Steam Machine as client devices), including introducing (in beta) the Pyrowave codec that many of the Sunshine forks are now implementing themselves.

If Steam integrates a proper on-demand, first-party virtual display option, it would become a very attractive alternative to the Sunshine forks for many people, because of the integration into its own UI (though many of the forks and reimplementations have their own unique benefits).

1

u/paymepleasss 7h ago

It does but the UI is a bit clunky. However it’s great if you use the capture option and set it to save the last 30-60 seconds of gameplay as a way to manually save highlights in real time.

1

u/LlorchDurden 7h ago

Babe, there's people live on Steam 👀

1

u/Sw00p10 7h ago

Yup, valve is even releasing a new local streaming codec that’s supposed to be insanely fast with low latency. I think it’s called pyrowave is I remember correctly

1

u/seventysevensevens 5h ago

I've played Dark Souls 3 on my phone with an Xbox controller, runs incredibly well actually.

1

u/tauspin 5h ago

I was late to discover it but you can have Steam continuously record the prior x minutes of your game play. So it never takes more than a fixed amount of space… a few GB for 2 hours in my case. Then if something cool happens you can shift-tab any time in the next 2 hours and go back to watch, or clip a segment to export to a video file that you can keep or share.

1

u/cosmichierophant 4h ago

yeah i added a switch emulator to my steam list and used steam link to play it on my phone in another room and it worked great. i tried Steam Linking a program i used for work to my tablet but that didnt go so well though.

1

u/Ushinon 3h ago

Yes, you can stream from steam as well. I don’t think it works for twitch its more so you stream on steam platform for that specific game you’re playing at the time.

1

u/KrustyKrabFormula_ 1h ago

this is most peoples reaction because no one uses it

1

u/Hetares 1h ago

Yeah. It can also work in-line with OBS to record and stream, though for some games it doesn't work and gives a black screen capture.

1

u/stinkingyeti 20m ago

Inbuilt to the platform to stream games to your friends list. They've had it for like a decade now? Longer probably.

0

u/DeltaBlast 10h ago

I think they meant streamed gaming. I have a pc dedicated to steamlink: it's only connected to ethernet (no keyboard/mouse/screen/anything) so I can play games on my tv from my couch. Dualsense controllers connected via Bluetooth to my tv for the controls.

1

u/Soulstiger 9h ago

Steam can do both.

Developers can even add flags to their games to add timestamps to the recordings for events.

E.g. Dota will flag kills

1

u/GrandmasterTactician 8h ago

When I heard stream, I thought like Livestreaming on steam or something, I've known about steam link
