Actually in manga, gyro surprisingly know well about dinosaurs. Especially considering they're in the 1800's

The term exists since 1842 by Sir Richard Owen if I remember correctly, with the early 19th century having a good amount of progress in studies.

But above all, the Bone Wars began in 1877 (big competition between two rich scientists); they lasted until 1892 and led to the discovery of around 150 species (maybe a bit less, can’t really remember) but also received significant media coverage and made the average person more aware of those creatures.

So with SBR happening in 1890, it’s isn’t as surprising as someone might think

Yeah, it's actually very period appropriate. Dinosaurs captured the imagination of people at the time, and so did vampires. Diego is mirroring Dio by becoming a monster from contemporary pop culture. It's actually pretty clever, and not as random as people often make it out to be.

yeah dinos in the us were discovered in 1858. 32 years before steel ball run takes place. it was roughly as new to the them as the human genome project is to us (lasting from 1990 to 2003).
