Things to Do I made a map of Halloween decorations around St. Pete

I’ve been walking around Old Northeast with my kiddos looking at Halloween decorations and started keeping track of the houses we liked. That turned into a microsite: https://frightthisway.com

It’s a map to help you find good displays, see what’s there, and get a sense of how scary they are before taking your kids.

Today I added Shore Acres, Crisp Park / Northeast Park, Historic Kenwood, and North Kenwood. Those maps are just getting started, so if you’ve decorated or spotted a good house, you can add it. Submissions work anywhere in Pinellas County.

Would love any feedback, submissions for new houses, and sharing with friends! Also, to be clear, this is a totally free site and I won't be adding advertising or trying to monetize. Just a side project for the community.

This baby was wandering at 15th Ave S and 24th St. Animal Services has it but I wanted to share here to maybe reunite but I and not so sure it’s from that area and maybe dumped dog. The dog was deaf too. A client of the rescue I volunteer with called me for advise or help so I went over and helped leash it and help him contact PCAS.

Local Questions Give me your local food deals.

It’s not affordable out there, so help me compile this list I can then share. I want to hear your favorite weekly restaurant & grocery store deals.

What I’m looking for

Non-National brand Saint Pete restaurants and their weekly food deals

  • A great taco Tuesday night, a pizza special, fish fry Fridays, looking at you Bier Boutique, great happy hours with solid food specials, Cheekys grouper sliders have my heart.

Local and chain store weekly food specials

  • Whole Food has a solid pizza Friday deal, Sunday chicken dinner deal at Fresh Market, St Pete Meat & Provisions has some solid weekly deals.

What I’m not looking for

You hating on a restaurant someone else likes sucks. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, this is a knowledge share.

Happy hours that are drinks only, no shame just can't sustain myself on alcohol alone. Prefer it to be a solid food deal as well if it's a bar, not just $2 chips and salsa or something.

The deal at the Applebee's across your street. No hate if that's your thing, I just prefer it to not be part of this list. Tends to be easier to support local restaurants than it is grocery stores.

Local News Anyone hear about the man and his dog found in Childs Park Wednesday night?

• Upvotes

Just came across this story about a man who was found seriously injured in the street near Childs Park Wednesday night. Apparently, his dog was with him, and police ended up shooting the dog when emergency responders couldn’t safely approach.
Sadly, both the man and his dog died. Preliminary reports mention severe dog bites, but it sounds like there are still a lot of unanswered questions about what actually happened.
Such a sad and bizarre situation. Has anyone heard anything more about this?

Local News Which congressional district are you voting in? It may have changed

Wondering why you’re suddenly voting in Congressional District 16 when you’ve always lived in District 13? It’s not a mistake by elections offices. A mid-decade redistricting session sliced Pinellas and Hillsborough counties up into new congressional districts. Among the biggest changes in Tampa Bay: Much of St. Petersburg and southern Pinellas County are part of Congressional District 16, which stretches all the way to Wauchula in Florida’s rural heartland. In April, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office proposed a redistricting plan that created four more red-leaning seats in Congress, imperiling four Democratic incumbents. State officials maintain that the map was not designed for partisan gain. Left-leaning organizations have filed lawsuits claiming the map violates Florida’s Fair Districts Amendment, which prohibits partisan gerrymandering. But the map is in place for the 2026 elections. For voters in Tampa Bay, the Times created snapshots of the region’s five reshaped congressional districts. Look for your district: https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/elections/2026/10/12/election-voting-ballots-midterm-hillsborough-pinellas-redistricting-luna-castor/

Remember, City Council elections are citywide, so voters across St. Pete have a say in both races.

Local Sports Why does Pinellas County produce so few top high school football players?

Given the population and number of high schools here, it's always been surprising to me that the St. Pete/Clearwater/etc. schools do not seem to produce starred prospects at the same clip as Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, etc.

I ran some quick math, and Pinellas produced only six of the 310 four- and five-star Florida prospects (per 247Sports) from 2021-2027. In other words, that's 0.6 prospects per 100k county residents, less than Pasco (0.7), Polk (1.1), Miami-Dade (1.4), Brevard (1.5), Orange (1.8), Duval (1.9), Hillsborough (2.1), Broward (2.2), Leon (2.4), Sarasota (2.6), and Manatee (12.3 thanks to IMG). We are ahead of Palm Beach, however (0.3).

Any ball-knowers have insight as to why this is? Just a lower relative youth vs. total population compared to those other counties? Less resources? Top kids choosing to attend IMG instead? Just less of a football culture?

Local Gaming Anyone interested in a free weekly backgammon night in St. Pete?

I'm putting together a free weekly backgammon game night here in St. Pete, loosely modeled on the NYC Backgammon Club. All levels welcome. We'll teach you in 5 minutes if you've never played this great game of skill and luck.

Thinking night one in November, then rotating through bars and breweries around town. Trying to gauge interest before I lock in a venue. Any spots you'd recommend?

I made an IG if you want to follow along. stpetebackgammonclub

Thanks!

Local News St Petersburg Hilton to be replaced by $300 million condo towers

The new owner of the Hilton Bayfront in downtown St. Petersburg wants to demolish the 56-year-old hotel and build two identical 44-story condominium towers in its place. Delray beach-based developer Kolter Urban filed applications with the city on Monday outlining plans for a 325-unit condo overlooking Tampa Bay. The project will also include 18,000 square feet of commercial space and a 519-space parking garage. It is estimated to cost around $300 million, according to plans filed with the city. The company purchased the 15-story hotel at 333 First St. SE for $67.2 million in March. Kolter’s regional president for Florida’s West Coast, Brian Van Slyke, said if all goes to plan, they will shut down the Hilton by mid 2028 to move forward with demolition and construction. Political What current city services would be explicitly blocked by amendment 3?

As per title. I don't mean "what would/could lose funding", I mean "what services would amendment 3 explicitly prohibit the city from funding" with it's restrictions on how local governments can use property-tax revenue?

Was debating the amendment with a coworker who doesn't really care about the lost revenue. When I mentioned that #3 also limits what services cities are allowed to provide, they asked the above question. I didn't have any real answers. A lot of the write ups on the amendment mention fire/police services, but #3 explicitly lists those as approved expenditures. So those statements are based on anticipated revenue loss? I don't know enough about what services the city/county provides, to determine what services will be prohibited by the amendment text. Will library funding be prohibited? Or is that just a question of funding loss?

Anyone here deeper in the weeds on this, who can educate me for my next debate?

Thanks.

Local Questions Strange sight over downtown

SpaceX launch from downtown. There were two lights almost framing the cloud. One faded to orange and drop off into the horizon towards the bay and the other faded north east.

Seems obvious now, but pre-coffee it looked like two lights hovering framing the cloud, nothing seemed to be moving. The sunrise is just amazing today as well.
