Discussion Just started reading Spawn
I just recently started reading Spawn for the first time. I bought compendium volume 1 to read the first 50 issues. Going into it I was pretty hesitant cause I read a lot of people crapping all over it. But I gotta say it's pretty decent so far. I am on issue 15. The writing isnt phenomenal but the artwork and premise is pretty awesome I find.

If you like it don't let other people's opinions deter you. I love Spawn. The writing...the art...the story...all of it. A lot of people online here aren't fans of the writing but like the art and action. That's fine too. If you like it and want to keep going awesome. But there's also a chance it's just not for you.

I know what you're saying. It gets better, promise.
Just so you know, continuity will get kinda off with retcons and whatnot. The first 250 issues will throw you off. To my eyes, continuity wasn't really set until after 250. I just wanna prepare you, because I actually almost stopped because I was so discouraged.

The first 18 issues are probably the best the series ever was. You’ll see in the second half of the compendium.

It was the last of the “guest writer” issues (Grant a Morrison in this case).
Todd is a fantastic artist. But he writes like an angsty 12 year old. It says a lot that the best issues of this series were written by work for hire guest writers.

for me, I'd say stick around till about compendium 2. I got 3 and 4 and I feel like I'd revisit the earlier stuff first.

I read the first 100 issues as a kid and just re-read them again about a year or two ago and still came away thinking that they’re excellent books. The hate that they receive is so over the top, it’s hard to take seriously. I find the writing to be pretty standard for that time period honestly. Maybe people were expecting something more deep or thought provoking, I don’t know. I don’t even think it tries to be the edgiest comic either, so that critique is a bit overstated in my opinion as well.

I'm up to Issue 100, its been honestly amazing! This comic never gets enough praise for the story. Yes, the first few issues spend a lot of time working out the pacing/ plot but as it figures out its strengths it really takes off! What adds to it is reading the extended universe issues such as Angela, Sam and Twitch etc, I couldn't recommend them enough.
I follow this reading guide and so far its been pretty spot on. https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/11i91JQNlfxKwxr4yV1S35444mO0wIsTHgXxm7lMGUCc/mobilebasic
