Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Updated Subreddit Reporting Guidelines

Hello folks!! It’s your mod team here with a request to you all regarding reporting of content.

Reporting of content is crucial to keeping the subreddit safe, and healthy. In addition, it also helps protect the many artists, and creators that post here. We appreciate you helping us by submitting reports when needed.

What we need from you.

Please make sure you’re reporting in good faith. Don’t report something simply because you don’t like it, or you find the particular subject matter offensive. Make sure that when you report something, it is actually in violation of one of our rules, or Reddit’s site wide rules.

Lastly, this is how you can REALLY help us, and the sub. If you suspect that a post contains stolen content, please send us a report using the new rule “Original Content Only”. Follow that up with a modmail to the sub with detailed information so that we can verify. OR, if you would rather remain anonymous in your report, feel free to use the ‘Custom Report’ and include any information you have to help us in the comment section of that report.

Thank you all, and feel free to ask questions in the comments.

Open to feedback and constructive criticism!

I added the glass opal eyes to the bird skull pendant. Used czech glass flowers & beads for the rest. I was inspired by the toggle clasp, mostly!

Found a Shawl at a thrift store. But I don't wear shawls.

DETAILS:
While out thrifting I came across this yellow embroidered shawl, and hot damn I couldn't stop myself. It was whispering to me. What was it saying? 'Drink some wine and make something. Ignore your responsibilities'. And that's just what I did. My electricity might be off, but my fashion is ON!

My shirt pattern comes from an old shirt that I deconstructed. Honestly the easiest and cheapest way to get a pattern. I cut along each seem, take mental notes (and promptly forget them, due to the wine), and boom! Pattern. I recommend tracing it onto some butcher paper. I don't know why, but like my old manager says, "extra work is fun. But don't feel joy. Joy is for the elite."

Unfortunately there was no way to match the patterns symmetrically due to the nature of the shawl, and my own laziness and impatience. There are some construction mistakes (mostly unevenness and symmetry) that I wish I'd corrected but if we're talking past regrets and mistakes, that one doesn't even make the list.

Total time was roughly 4.5 hours of sewing, or roughly 6 episodes of the show 'Carrie', that are confusing because you're sewing and not paying attention to the plot, and your husband gets frustrated because you keep asking questions about what's going on with the 'Psychic Laura Ingalls Wilder', and also because there's a Singer Heavy Duty buzzing away on the other side of the living room, but you refuse to take it upstairs because you simultaneously want to spend time with your loved one and also completely ignore him in pursuit of crafting.

I don't know exactly what the fabric is, but it feels and looks like a Gaberdine. I started with maybe 2ish yards of the fabric and 3/4s of a bottle of wine and used both in their entirety for this shirt.

Finally got around to making a stand for this thing - an Enco 40030 that I got for cheap a while back. Not tall enough to be a floor unit, but not light enough for a cheap old table, at 300lbs. Was proud of the angled cuts on the back - made with a diy skill saw jig, and first time trying that out. I think it turned out alright!

Have sculpted this abstract lamp. In it I’m looking for the form and composition for the big project.

I have used the handbuilding technique and stoneware ceramic clay to make it. It is always a competition to make such kind of constructions in big scale, so I have made this small scale form to find it.

Peggelino Sprinklehelm was once a tiny harbour pup who lived for ice‑cream festivals. During a chaotic summer storm, he slipped on a fallen scoop, crashed into a crate, and wound up with his trusty wooden leg. Later, a misfired sprinkle cannon crowned him with the splattered scoop he still wears proudly. Now he roams the harbour, one leg, two cones, and a forever‑sticky helmet — the sweetest little hero in town.

Really happy with how these hazel plaques turned out. Love when a finished craft keeps it's rustic vibe.

Mother and Baby Nursing Paper Cut

I am a fulltime nursing mom of a 3month old baby and I finally found my creative mojo back to create this papercut. I am thrilled with the outcome and cozy vibes. I could really put my emotions in this one after these past 3 crazy months. Are there nursing moms out there with more ideas that show the beauty or struggles of nursing? I'd already love to work on a new idea.

I used thin carton. I lifted some parts with sticky cushions (what are they called??) for a bit more depth.

I built a pool out of wooden pallets in my driveway so I could film a scene for my short film (with final still results)

Hi All wanted to share this undertaking of building a pool for my short film. The script was only 6 pages but required the actors to be in the water for a scene and I settled on the idea of making a pool to film this in my driveway. I choose this idea for 2 primary reasons -

I felt it would give me more control over the safety of the crew and actors instead of finding a natural body of water to do this in. Second, I admittedly was intrigued by the challenges I would face to pull this off.

In efforts of being budget friendly the pool was framed in by some pallets ($20) I found in FB and lined with a black pond liner ($60) off eBay. I fastened it all together with some additional 2x4x10 lumber ($25) and decking hardware I already had from other projects. Lastly I utilized 3 2 ton racket straps (already owned) to handle the lateral forces once the water was in. The finished pool was roughly 8’x8’x4’ with a water depth of 3.5 feet.

When it was all said an done, I was really pleased with the results. This was my first time building something like like this and it was such a great opportunity and learning experience.
