  1. A solar-powered Meshtastic node providing free, off-grid text messaging to anyone in range.

2 and 3: My mini-server rack made out of an old CD organizer, with my Raspberry Pi devices stuffed inside. I self-host most of my own tech infrastructure.

  1. My barrel composter. Food and yard waste becomes plant food.

5 and 6: Rain barrels. I almost never use city water for my yard. Also, raspberries and grapevine.

  1. I upcycled an old car speaker into a Bluetooth radio rather than buy a new one.

8, 9, and 10. I replaced the entire front lawn with a pollinator habitat, hosting over 40 native species (and a couple non-natives to appease neighbors).

To me, the self-sufficiency and going-against-the-norm are what make all of this punk.

EDIT: This gallery is basically a “practicing what I preach” companion post to this one about how to start living a solarpunk lifestyle now. https://www.reddit.com/r/solarpunk/s/dNQPHnEIhe

More at: https://storyseedlibrary.org/tags/2026-collab/

The works below are a selection of illustrations created for the 2026 Solarpunk Art Collab ran by the Story Seed Library and Andrewism.

Even in the most optimistic scenarios of carbon neutrality, the XXI century will be full of climate disasters our civilization, culture and infrastructure are not prepared for. Let’s step away from clean, utopian Solarpunk worlds and roll our sleeves to face the consequences of our past.

How can a better Solarpunk world react to the coming disasters? How will our daily lives change? What new or repurposed infrastructure will keep us safe? What new traditions will we need to guide us? What stories will we tell ourselves to make sense of the world that has changed so much?

Let’s imagine more than just the rising waters: the droughts and fires, the sudden floods and pandemics, loss of infrastructure and supply chains we take for granted.

Finally, for the Disaster Relief, how can we step away from our colonial habits and imagine giving the survivors agency instead of handouts? How can we empower communities to rebuild after a catastrophe, find solace in each other and grieve those lost?

You can read more about the initiative at its event page. All of the works are available on Andrewism’s tumblr.

Original Content Honestly cities are chaotic and I think they should be that way forever. No "master plan" because cities are too diverse with so many moving parts you cannot simply plan it all

Ive been playing cyberpunk and everything is so crazy. Yeah you have residential buildings, commercial spaces, recreational, clinical, educational, industrial, and whatnot. But its all so chaotic. I love. The chaos is beautiful. Like a forest.

Sure you can plan cities but like you can't master plan every small detail and such. I like the chaos of everything. I wanna just buy a suburban plot and build those gigantic cyberpunk towers as a "fuck you" to NIMBYS . just because i can.

Technology I'm currently unsupervised and thinking, always a interesting combination.

I was Thinking and unsupervised, Always a interesting combination.

If you have made it this far I promise I'm trying to get to the point. I was talking to a guy in Alabama trying to help him feel out starting an on-site welding company. He was showing me a sway bar he was thinking about trying to fix had torn loose. If you don't know what is required to do that safely without the right equipment it's a lot. After i raddle off a laundry list on what might be required to fix it.

It occurred to me that I don't have a clue why the south isn't into solar or wind energy. But more importantly farmers and ranchers were adverse to alternative energy. I mean that salt of the earth folks that apparently just realized the Sun is real. But I really was thinking about the problems everyone is facing with fuel and feed costs. I started wondering if the reason they object to Solar and Wind sites on their land. It's not designed to be functional for farming, it's Big city ideas that don't make any sense in the country. The way it's presented.

I think it was China that figured it out, they installed thousands of acres of desert and mountains with Solar panels. They were mounted maybe 10-15' off the ground and they discovered that life started blooming in the desert where nothing has grown in hundreds of years. The shade and tilt created an environment suitable enough to restart life. Enough life to support sheep and other small farm life. In the middle of nowhere while they are making energy enough to support city's.

There might be a test later.

There's also a similar theory called ago-voltaics using solar panels for shading agro culture. Beans, tomatoes, peppers leeks and a long list of other foods. By using the path of the shade they could protect the plants, make energy and reduce water consumption in a baren area. The plants topping under the panels would draw some of the heat away making them more efficient.

Which brings me back to Alabama and the guy I was talking with was trying to figure out how to fix what's broken and make some money in his area. I was trying to think with all the different ways I've seen to make electricity. All the homemade windtubines, solar porches and water conservation ideas I've seen in 40 something years. I'm a bit of a fabricator and have an ability to see the way something works. Then manage to put something together with a couple of sticks, a bit of string and a rubber band.

So, as I said, thinking why can't the ideas mesh into something that would actually help farms work better. I've long had the belief that if every single building could support it's own needs at least in part. That would take tons of stress off the grid lowering the residual energy price. So I've been playing with the designs, buildings and needs and I think I have parts of a solution. I've seen in some parts of cattle country rest stops in the middle of fields a quarter mile from anything.

So the idea starts with a pole barn of almost any size. If you extend the roof like a porch using Solar panels on the East, South and West sides about 10-15' . It would allow the inner shaded areas another couple degrees cooler. Then if you installed a wind turbine sized to the building or a couple motionless turbines . Could you then also catch the footprint of the building to catch rain in gutters. Saving cleaning and oxygenating it for the animals. With underground maybe or on the north side. From that underground would be a fantastic place for a battery bank to collect the energy.

In theroy a design similar could collect energy and water year round and have a charge station at every building. Provide a rest stop for animals to get out of the summer sun and weather protection reducing water loss helping get and keep weight up for cattle. It could be a small workshop or charging area assuming we can figure out how to build electric harvesters. H I'mow to keep it charged is solved.

I think if we could be open source plans like that, you could get everyone that doesn't understand. It's technically a new industry with lots of potential for cross training with older skills. It would take a degree of stress off the ranchers and cattle. By keeping them covered safe and watered. But most importantly be a blueprint for real sustainable housing that's self sufficient.

But I think part of what brought me to all of this is, I understand the space saving design of rooftop solar. But frankly it's an imbecilic design flaw to put Heat sensitive equipment on a surface that depending on the type can become 60% hotter than the air temperature. That's really bugged me for a while, I don't think you would need half the surface area of panels if they were just more efficient.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Ask the Sub Birth rate, depopulation fear

87 Upvotes

I was watching earlier a video about medieval housing and the condition of servs, one thing that surprised me is that after the black plague things improved considerably for the average person because now they had more bargaining power since there were far fewer people around. I suppose and correct me if I'm wrong that the last year's of billionaires and state presidents freaking out about birth rate is that maybe they would like to have an ever increasing population, more demand for their products but lots of hands willing to work for misery because if they don't like how they are treated there's always lots of people willing to work for misery in their place

Ask the Sub 🎮 Solarpunk Game Survey

20 Upvotes

Hi everyone👋, I’m a game developer exploring new directions for Solarpunk games, and I’d love to hear your thoughts🧠✨.

💭 A little Context

Many games featuring Solarpunk worlds focus on building, crafting, or restoring ecosystems. But what if you could experience a Solarpunk world without having to build it yourself?

💬 Here’s what I’m curious about

Would you be interested in a story-driven Solarpunk adventure where you explore a handcrafted world, discover how it came to be and uncover its stories — rather than building or managing the world yourself?

ℹ️ I’d love to hear from both dedicated gamers and people who play more casually.

I’m curious whether this kind of game appeals to you, what genres you’d want to see paired with Solarpunk, or whether you think building and crafting are essential to the genre.

Thanks for sharing your swarm intelligence!

Ask the Sub Starting a business problem

16 Upvotes

I have worked for the last few years on an invention of mine. It's a single seater motorcycle with an enclosed cabin. Cars are mostly used by a single person so why not have a light, affordable and efficient vehicle that does that. I'm currently at the third prototype, so far I've invested my own money and was able to push the development forward as much as my resources allowed. I a not the first guy trying something like this but I think the tecnology today is fit to develop such a vehicle.

My goal is to build a vehicle that can last many decades, easy to fix, and easy to maintain long term.

Here is my issue, I was able to fund the development of the prototypes by myself but once I move to manufacturing I need resources I don't have to purchase the equipment to produce the vehicle. I could go the way of finding investors to help fund the project but I have an issue with that. Investors are interested in returns, and support a conventional capitalist oriented business that has the principal purpose of shareholder profit. My dream would be to make a cooperative where the workers are the shareholders and the ability for decision-making in the business, that's not a sale I can take to private investors. I am keeping an eye for European development funds, if I could get money from those I would not be told what structure the business needs to have but so far I haven't been able to find grants for people like me. The eu gives development grants but to already established business and I'm not an established business. What other avenues would be available to help fund this endeavor?

Hey guys I’m about to start college and looking to pick a broad major in something that will promote a eco socialist/solarpunk future. I could see me being like a di Vinci as I’m interested in conservation, eco architecture, and renewable energy systems. Anyway I could combine the three or pick a broad major that specializes with a master?

Discussion Green roof biggest limiting factor?

14 Upvotes

I asked some places around my city if they’d be interested in me installing a green roof for free. They said that the buildings are so old they’re worried the ceiling will cave in. I’d love to discuss ways this hurdle can be overcome!

6890w array, 180azimuth, sol-ark 12k, 4x pytes v5 batteries. running one 12k BTU EG4 mini-split, whirlpool full size wash machine, Samsung electric 240v dryer, TV, several ceiling fans, GE convection propane oven resistance igniters (roasting rabbit), 80gal heat-pump water heater, 2x refrigerators, 2x 14cuft chest freezers, wine fridge, Grundfos10 220' well pump, 70 gal fish tank, and eventually a 60 gallon clawfoot bathtub soak to recover from a day of farming, livestock, cleaning, laundry, housekeeping & cooking. Batteries only hit 82% SOC today. barely 22:00 and down to 55%.

normal recent daily average has been 30kwh. batteries are usually 100% SOC by ~13:30 inverter begins clipping until sundown.

today consumed 46kwh. 16kwh additional use and 80% of that was laundry.

Research The Rosario Plan : it's time to stop the CON !

3 Upvotes

Here you go, all in one place for this afternoon.

**Title:**

The Rosario Plan: turn warships into cargo ships, clean the oceans, end poverty. The math is already there.

**Body:**

```
I'm a carpenter, not an economist. But I got tired of hearing "we can't afford it," so I ran the numbers.
The Fortune 500 made $1.87 trillion in profits last year. Cleaning up the entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch costs $7.5 billion. We hand $35 billion a year in subsidies to fossil fuel companies. We already grow enough food for 10 billion people.
The math is already there. The money is already there. It's just allocated to shareholders instead of humans.
So I wrote up the full plan: top companies redirect profits into a public fund, military budgets convert to a people's fleet, fossil subsidies flip to clean tech, farming serves people, not ethanol. Nobody gets poor. The rich stay rich, they just keep less idle paper. Many new businesses bloom on top of the public infrastructure, same as the internet did.
