šŸ†˜Help Me Title: ChatGPT Slack event-trigger registration says ā€œ@ChatGPT isn’t in the channel,ā€ but Slack API confirms membership

Hi everyone,

I’m a German user, and English isn’t my first language. Please excuse any awkward wording. I used ChatGPT to translate this post into English so I could explain the problem as clearly as possible. Thank you for your patience and help.

I’m trying to configure an event-triggered task in ChatGPT Work using a connected Slack workspace. The intended flow is:

  1. An n8n workflow posts a completed task’s result to a dedicated public Slack channel.
  2. A Slack event triggers a ChatGPT task.
  3. ChatGPT reads and reviews the result.

Step 1 works. ChatGPT can also read the channel through its connected Slack tools. However, creating the event-triggered task fails with:

ā€œI couldn't create an immediate Slack monitor because u/ChatGPT isn't in [channel].ā€

What we have verified:

  • I’m using ChatGPT Plus in a desktop web browser.
  • The connected Slack workspace and selected public channel are correct.
  • A current Slack API channel-membership query explicitly lists both my user and the ChatGPT bot.
  • Slack’s installed-app configuration also lists the bot as belonging to that channel.
  • OAuth authorization was renewed previously, but the registration error persisted.
  • Slack’s ā€œAI agent experienceā€ setting is enabled for the ChatGPT app.
  • No pending permission-update request was visible in the app-management pages we inspected.
  • A manually sent channel message with a correctly resolved u/ChatGPT mention received no thread reply when checked about ten minutes later. A direct-message test also showed no response.
  • Signing into admin.openai.com with the same account used for ChatGPT displays ā€œAccess required.ā€
  • The setup link suggested by the registration error, https://chatgpt.com/slack-ai-app-install, redirects to the normal ChatGPT homepage without showing a setup flow.

One potentially relevant detail: Slack shows extensive permissions granted on behalf of my user, but the app-level permission shown in the installed configuration is limited to viewing messages that directly mention u/ChatGPT. I don’t know whether this is expected for this integration.

OpenAI Support has an open case. Its latest response has not confirmed the root cause or whether this feature is enabled for my specific Plus account.

We are keeping two questions separate:

  1. Why does event-trigger registration reject a bot whose channel membership is confirmed?
  2. Why does the installed bot not respond to an explicit mention?

We do not yet know whether these share a cause. The existing n8n-to-Slack workflow works, so I’d prefer to avoid another blind reinstall.

Has anyone successfully configured this exact setup with a personal Plus account?

Could we be confusing the personal Slack connector with a separately configured ChatGPT-in-Slack deployment? Is there a specific permission, installation step, or account eligibility requirement we should check?

I’m looking for a concrete diagnostic step or a confirmed working configuration. Happy to provide redacted screenshots or additional non-sensitive details.

Thanks for your help!

Does anyone else use Slack as their "can someone quickly check this?" tool?

At my last company, Slack slowly turned into the place where every random data question ended up

"How many new customers did we get last month?" "Can someone check Stripe?" "Which product sold the most this quarter?"

None of these were hard questions, but they always depended on whoever knew the right databases or had time to write SQL. The constant ad hoc data requests ended up interrupting engineers way more than they probably should.

It got me wondering why we don't have an AI teammate in Slack that can just handle live queries in plain English. Basically text to SQL or natural language SQL, but inside the place where everyone already works.

I recently came across Mate, which seems to be built around that idea. You ask a question in Slack, it queries your connected databases and replies with the answer (or even a spreadsheet/chart if needed). It feels like a pretty practical take on Slack AI and self-serve analytics, especially for smaller teams that don't have a dedicated data analyst.

Curious if anyone here is using something similar. Has it actually reduced the constant "Hey, can you pull this number for me?" messages, or do people still end up asking engineers anyway?

šŸ†˜Help Me Timezone Settings Not Working

For some reason, the time in the desktop version of Slack has been 1 hour off for me on various devices since yesterday. My computer (PC) time Settings are correct, but Slack is not. When I change the timezone Settings within Slack, nothing actually changes; still off my 1 hour no matter what timezone I select.

Anyone else facing this problem?

Another question on search

I don’t think I formulated it very well. I am not looking for keyboard shortcuts. I just want to know once I’m on the search page. It’s not immediately obvious how to narrow it down by DM or channel. What can I do to type in a search string, but also limited to where I wanna search.

šŸ†˜Help Me Mute mobile notifications from one user only?

I have notifications on for my phone, most other notifications are helpful and people are sensible. There is one user who uses the workspace (all channels) more than I personally need to see, is there a way to not get notified when they specifically post? It’s harmless and technically could be somewhat relevant to each channel, but never relevant to me. TIA!

ā„¹ļøPSA Year after year of the SAME ISSUES.

Notifications on Slack continue to be buggy and work intermittently at BEST.

How can such a major component of this software continue to suck, year after year? I just dont understand it. They have a program, who's job is to notify you when you've been messaged, and this function is a literal pipe dream to have work at any given time.

Consider yourself lucky if you've never had this issue. Judging from the number of complaints I see in the history, I'm not alone.

Where's my ā€œOpen Folderā€ option??????

I use the Slack desktop app on my MacBook, and until recently, whenever I downloaded a file, I'd get a small pop-up with options like ā€œOpen Fileā€ and ā€œOpen Folderā€ (or maybe ā€œShow in Finder,ā€ I can't remember 😭).

That little pop-up was genuinely one of the most convenient features in my entire workflow.

Now it's gone, and I have to manually navigate to the folder every time I download something... this is something I hate..

Did Slack remove this feature in an update? Is there a setting I accidentally disabled?

how do I get it back...?

Is there a way to lock threads?

It happens on occasion that discussions on the same subject happen across multiple channels. In order to facilitate centralizing communication it would be useful if we could lock threads so that people are forced to move to a single location.

Ideally there would be a way to unify existing threads into a new channel so that they can continue to exist but are linked to a shared channel

Can I talk freely in huddle with a co-worker or is it being recorded?

We only have slack on our workplace and sometimes I like to get into a meet with a colleague just to talk about life in our freetime.

Is it safe or do you think every huddle meeting is being recorded?

Slack Tutorials for the 60+ Crowd

Hi all,

I am a part of an itty bitty (6 person) non-profit that made the move onto Slack over the summer to keep things organized and reduce inbox clutter.

As it stands, I am the only person using Slack regularly. Everyone can't seem to find what they need and as many times as I've explained different features or how things work, it doesn't seem to be sticking.

Everyone wants to be on Slack but about half of the workplace (and the entirety of the founders of the org.) are all over 50 (with two of them being over 70). Our workplace centers around building less screen-based childhoods for kids and so there is also a level of aversion to tech in addition to potentially some struggle because of their ages.

I don't want to generalize folks over fifty (or over 60, 70, or any age) but I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations for Slack tutorials or how-tos that might be especially user friendly for the non-tech-savvy among us.

Big thank you!

Slackbot in navigation bar

Why do they force a slackbot icon in the navigation bar above home and disallow hiding it? Nobody uses it

This is not a feature request I just really don’t like how hard they are pushing this useless feature

Will huddles become a full meeting platform? If no, why not?

Been away from Slack for 1.5 years now, and I miss it dearly. Working in Teams at my current workplace. Integrations are either not supported in Teams, don't work well, or don't work at all. My biggest gripe is that Teams does not enable collaboration and cross-team/time-zone work nearly as well as Slack does. Slack's simplicity with channels would help us improve our collaborative culture and efficiency. Many coworkers agree with me.

While building a business case, I think the main blocker is huddles

My previous workplace was super Slack-heavy. But we rarely used huddles; many times people had issues with audio, microphone, and high CPU, etc. Everyone just used Google Meet, even for short meetings, like "hallway chats". It just worked better. And of course, the huddle's 50-participant limit makes it not a meeting tool, so it could not replace Teams.

Feels to me like a lost opportunity for Slack to make huddles a full meeting-featured platform. Why haven't they made it a "Teams/Zoom/Meet-killer"?

Anyone knows? Thanks in advance.

I built a Flip 7 based app for Slack!

If you enjoy Flip 7 and want an ice breaker, team-building, or a distraction, I've built FL7P, a Slack app for playing the popular press-your-luck card game asynchronously.

Everything runs in Slack: you invite FL7P to a channel, typeĀ /fl7p start, people hit theĀ JoinĀ button, the host hits the Start button, then everyone takes their turn one at a time, either Hitting or Staying. Action cards (Freeze, Flip 3, Second Chance) add chaos. The bot handles all the scoring and progression automatically. Once someone banks 200 total points, the highest score wins at the end of that round. It's asynchronous, so games take as long as you'd like, as long as someone takes their turn at least once a week. People can take turns whenever and no one needs to be online at the same time.

It's free as long as I can afford the server costs. No data is collected beyond what's needed to run the game (which all gets expired and deleted after 7 days), and I'm working on getting it into the Slack App Directory. Before it can be publicly listed, the app must be installed inĀ 10 active workspaces, so I'm looking for test drivers.

Install link:Ā https://fl7p.vercel.app

Happy to answer questions, and standing by to fix bugs! Hope others enjoy this as much as my group does.

Flip 7 is a fantastic game and even if you haven't played, I highly recommend picking up a copy from The Op Games.

Getting rid of "Set up your space"

I've set up a new space and completed all onboarding steps I found suitable. However looks like the message in the upper left corner won't go away until I complete every task - even though I (for example) don't want to connect my mails with slack?

šŸ†˜Help Me How are you stopping customer data leaks in public Slack channels without slowing down dev teams?

Our engineering teams rely heavily on Slack for daily troubleshooting, but employees keep pasting customer payloads, API keys, and database snippets directly into public channels.

Basic pattern matching DLP tools flag every mock UUID or test key, which fills our queue with false positives. If we block message posting outright, devs complain that security is blocking work.

How are you monitoring and securing sensitive data leaks across every Slack channel without causing alert fatigue or frustrating users? Are you relying on built-in Slack controls or third-party DLP automation?

šŸ†˜Help Me Slack is changing my status to "Out of Office" based on other peoples' Gmail calendar invites

Last week, I noticed that Slack had changed my status to Out of Office without my involvement. I couldn't figure out why so I just cleared it and went on with my day.

Today, it happened again. So I looked at my Google calendar and noticed that it seems to be triggered based on invites that I receive from colleagues for when they will be out of the office. In Slack, where it says "out of office until X date and time" aligns with the end date and time of those invites.

This was never a problem until last week, and now it's happened twice. I've confirmed that on my calendar, I am marked as Free (not Busy) so that can't be the reason.

I can't seem to find any settings in Slack (or in Google Calendar) that would control this. Does anyone know which setting I need to change to fix this?
