Discussion Getting Script Help

Hey there friends! I'm a little new to the sub, but so excited it's here!

I started a YouTube channel a little while ago, where I'm posting 4-8 minute sketches, and have about 8 up now! I'm really enjoying the process of writing, directing, and editing them!

I have a few issues though, where I'm worried I'm not growing as an artist because I just kind of post into the wind without a ton of feedback (I am not heavily followed).

I have friends who are great comedians who review and give feedback, but I really feel like I want to get help from people who are doing more professional work than me.

What have you guys done to like find mentors or coaches for your sketch work?

I’d say look at it as less like finding a mentor and more like finding a community. Find people you vibe with. Tell them you like their stuff (be sincere). The biggest part of being a comedy writer (in my opinion) is being a fan of comedy. People not finding and interacting with your stuff? Look at how you interact with the comedy you like. Be the change you want to see on that front.

As far as writing/filming/editing everything try to do something new with each video/sketch. I forget the exact percentage (maybe 80/20) but every new project apply 80% of things you know and 20% new things you want to try. Learn from it and apply it to the next project.

Best of luck with the channel!

Same situation, but I went through a bunch of comedy places for writing, performing and such and they all gave me the same advice. Comedy is repetition, it's forcing yourself to go on stage, forcing yourself to write, filming, showing your film. The best learning moment for me was getting into a sketch festival and showing my sketch and seeing what people reacted to, or (painfully) what they didn't react to. After that I started collaborating with people who have been doing this a LOT longer. When I involved them in the performance I noticed the writing advice became a LOT more direct. If something wasn't funny, they would tell me, if something I thought wasn't strong they would say "no I think I know how to make that funny." That's where the real growing began. Just keep going for it and working on it! And post your account! Let us see what you got!
