Welp, I was prepared. And this is a rewatch, but it's been over 15 years or so. Had my tissues ready, and did end up needing them. I forgot how perfect of an ending it is. It's happy and it fucking rips your heart out at the same time.
Of course Brenda died listening to Billy drone on about something, and it was the only funny one. Keith was upsetting, but David moved on with a guy named Raoul. It's in the obituaries, it comes with the box set that I have somewhere. Won't get rid of it even though I don't own a DVD player. But they all lived very good lives.
Oh, and that pic... they're drinking Ravenswood wine. I completely forgot about that wine, I used to drink it all the time. It was really good cheap wine.

On rewatch and I was just waiting for this scene so bad. It’s so cold and the build up to it is so nerve wracking. What irks me the most is just the confusion Nate feels is brought back to the audience, and especially Barbs reaction. It leaves so much to wonder. What did she know about her husbands affair? Did she know what he was about to do? I would love to hear yalls answers.

I just finished the show and am utterly speechless, how is this show not as popular as breaking bad around the globe? The last 3 episodes left me in tears especially the ending which I think is the best ending for a show. I'm missing this show already.

LOTS OF SPOILERS!!!
Excuse me if I'm not the most articulate but Ive been wanting to talk about this with people for awhile but i always hesitate. Anyways, i don't understand how people defend and like Nate. I know this show is about very very complex characters and i think it portrays each of them perfectly, but Nate is unforgivable but yes all of them are flawed and in no way perfect. I'm sorry if you love him.
Before i start my rant I will say that Nate does have some good moments. He is a great support to all the grieving families and i think brings a more positive attitude to the funeral home. Given his medical condition, I do think that a lot of his irrational or impulsive decisions come from it, but don't excuse them. I think Nate is meant to be some sort of "free" spirit that doesn't like to be tied down and just wants to live according to his own agenda and pleasure. I don't think he's evil but i also don't believe he's the kind of character that thinks before doing something. I'm not going to go into my thoughts on him and Brenda since they're 2 peas in a pod, except unlike him, she can own up to her mistakes and grow from them.
Now let me begin, for starters Nate loves to blame the world and everyone around him for his shortcomings. I get that he was not expecting to walk into his fathers death and he ends up inheriting a business he wanted no part of, but no one forced him to stay. Yes, Ruth implied that he could stay longer but she never begged him or forced him to. I think he stayed to make himself feel better, like it would make him a better person for staying. Also, who's he kidding, he stayed for Brenda, who at the time we can assume was one of the first really unique women he'd entered a relationship with. She was very much a mirror of himself in many ways
Secondly i want to talk about the one everyone here hates. Lisa! I have watched this show about 4 times now and each time i have more and more sympathy for her. Before i go on i want to acknowledge that she is also flawed and in her own way a terrible person (ifykyk). BUT she also never forced Nate to be with her and Maya. In fact she wanted nothing to do with him at the start. She knew Nate better than most and understood he did not want to settle down. I've seen some comments say that she went to LA on purpose to find him, but if that was the case why didn't she do it sooner? She offered to have him give her full custody of Maya. She didn't expect a relationship from him and was excited to know Brenda was okay with everything but once Nate reveals that Brenda knows nothing, Lisa rightfully becomes angry and asks him to not be apart of their life. With everything that Brenda did, of course it breaks them up and while Brenda was screwing whoever and sabotaging the relationship, Nate was doing the same. He never told her about his AVM, and Lisa which happened before Brenda's sex addiction btw, doesn't tell her about the baby and then just chooses to leave when its convenient to him because she's the bad one. SMH.
With this said once he enters his relationship with Lisa you can just tell he never checked in. He's trying too hard to be this normal husband and father, to prove something to others but it goes against everything he really is. He doesn't want a family, he never did. He's just stuck again because he feels he cant runaway. I'll give him some grace and say that i do think he just wanted to be a good person but he was never being true to himself which in turn makes him become this angry bitter person that we often see out of him. I think one of the few moments i felt he was on the right track was when he and Lisa decide to move as friends inside of the art exhibit. I think that scene did him good.
LASTLY (sorry for such. a long post) I'm going to talk about Maggie. I really don't like Maggie. Mostly because i know when she shows up it's over for everyone lol. But how do most people not talk about the fact that he coerced her at the end?I feel like so many people here loooove to defend nate (i get it, its a show, maybe you relate to him) but OMG he literally pressured maggie right before the *end*. She said no, she clearly looked uncomfortable even if deep down she did want a genuine connection with him, and instead of you know, listening and respecting not only his marriage but her consent, he keeps pushing it and of course she gives in. After they finish you can tell Maggie is not happy about what just happened. Assault is not always some violent act. Yet one of Nates last acts is to pressure her into doing something she didn't want, and only for his gratification and justification of the quaker philosophy he's believing (for his benefit of course).
Call me a hater but i just cant get around any of the love for Nate. He's flawed and clearly hurt, or haunted by something. He does have good moments and is a very complex character (as is everyone else in the show) but if there was a "bad" guy in this show, it would be him and then Rico lol. I love this show and all the characters on it.

I've started watching the show, I'm now at the end of season one. I like the characters. I was wondering what is your guys opinion on Brenda? Do you think she's hot? Im Not sure. But I like her character, I think she's cool :)

He is such a joy to watch. Love this man!
When asked about the SFU finale script, I wondered if he is tired of being asked about the show. What do you guys think?
And I realized I have been saying his last name wrong!! “Krow-zuh” DUH 🤦🏼♀️

He is surprisingly good considering this was his first television show. I saw him on dexter before that playing a character who remains emotionless most of the times and here he plays a character much more expressive and has many emotional breakdowns throughout the passage of the show. Probably amongst my favourite. An almost 3 decade old media did better representation of gay people without it feeling forced like in many modern television shows.

I love love love Ruth so much. Her character development is so nice to watch. I’m currently on Season 3 episode 7 I believe.
But, since episode 1, I cannot stand Brenda. She actually irritates me so much. I thought she was gone for good :(

Sarge and Rico’s cousin Ramon it was interesting to see more masculine gay characters outside of Keith.

There is some brilliant content in there. It is a shame it somewhat declined after season 4, but for a good while on the show, it had some extremely sharp writing, and all around, the entire package was golden.

Six Feet Under turned 25 this year, and it's been part of my life since it first aired. I owned every season on DVD and loaned them to friends, and we talked about the Fishers like we knew them.
In October 2011, I watched the whole series back to back, knowing my dad's death was coming. He died in 2012. I think I wanted preparation, or at least company. Since then I've rewatched it 8 to 10 times, and it's become a kind of ritual.
I love that it makes me laugh and cry. It also teaches me how to be with people in uncomfortable and tragic moments, and how to say what I mean and feel. It shows the cost of not doing that, too, given how careful the Fisher family is with each other.
I can't pick a favorite character because it changes with each rewatch. Claire always holds a huge spot in my heart, but I love David, Nate, Brenda, Billy, Ruth, Nathaniel, Sarah, and Bettina too. They're all so compelling.
And the finale. "Breathe Me" playing while Claire drives, closing every question about what happens to all of them. I never get through it dry-eyed.
So I'm curious: do you rewatch it? Do you turn to it when you're low or trying to make sense of death, or do you find it more of a teacher about relationships and family? Has it given you hope or clarity you didn't expect?
I'm not usually a Reddit person, but this felt like the right place to ask. Who's your favorite character right now and why? What storyline or episode or song or moments do you take away with you? Are there other series that move you like this one does for me?

Hi there watching it through for the first time (started it back in the day but never finished) and during the dinner scene i thought i was hearing things, but they're playing the music that gets played at Drag Race when the queen getting eliminated goes back to the work room? This aired before drag race so it's unlikely to be an easter egg but found it funny. Apparently it's called "The Last Sun" by Chris Allen.

I absolutely LOVE Ruth Fisher. I would not want to live with her, but I feel like I'd be her Bettina. Thank you for listening.

Which actors do you think would of suited the show in some role
Feel Ed McMahon would of been good
John Lithgow as George

Hi!
I’m a lesbian from Germany (she/her) and have been a huge fan of Six Feet Under for several years.
I’m rewatching the show these days, and despite all of his flaws and the things I really hate about him, I really wish I had a friendship with a cis het guy like Nate.
I think he’s such a great person in a lot of ways, as in standing up to Ruth, staying calm more than once when Lisa is being unbelievably annoying again, not tolerating Brenda’s bullshit (e.g. her cheating on him), and comforting his clients so beautifully.
There’s so much about him that resonates with me on such a profound level.
Like Nate, I just want to be happy, and search for meaning in my life all the time, too. I also deeply identified with his continuous search for his true calling job-wise, and creating a safe space for others to express what they’re truly feeling (as in him telling David to let Ruth cry uncontrollably at Nathaniel’s wake, or comforting even the most obnoxious clients by giving them a shoulder to cry on.)
Friendships between cisgender gays and cis het women are all over pop culture, as in Carrie and Stanford on Sex and the City.
As a feminist, I truly wish we lived in a society where it’s normal for decent cis het guys like Nate to have a respectful friendship with us lesbians.
What are your thoughts on all this 😃?

I think Ruth was at least partially that way because she was 19 (possibly 18) when she had Nate. At which point she was in "the baby bubble" (for those non-parents in the thread this is where your own personal life is organized almost entirely around keeping babies, toddlers, little kids alive) from 1965 (Nate 0) to 1975 (David age 5). Then she had about 8 years of young kids to tweens to teenagers (less busy but still busy) before going back in the Baby Bubble from 1983 to 1988 (Claire). I could be projecting here because I was a stay-at-home Dad for a combined total of just 3 years but I don't think I grew or changed very much (at all?) in those years. I refer to those years as "the blur" because the days were long but the years just disappeared in a blink. The individual days could feel incredibly long, but somehow whole years disappeared almost instantly.
Ruth became a mother so young that she never really had a long stretch of adulthood in which she got to ask, “Who am I when nobody needs something from me?”
By the time the show starts, Nate is pushing 40, David is in his 30s, Claire is nearly grown, and Ruth is only then getting something close to the developmental freedom most people get in their late teens or 20s . . . at the moment her husband dies.

Vanessa keeps gaslighting him over a decision that wasn't even his. He didn't take the loan from angelica which they paid back also she asked money from her multiples times before that which rico had no knowledge of. She crashes at their home anytime and constantly meddles in their finances and their family. Rico cheats on her in this episode, not defending that at all but angelica constantly tries to destroy their marriage but vanessa is to blind to see it, even the money that she is being lent is some form of power trip but she thinks that her sister is some hollywood big shot who doesn't need it.
