"This is the closest we've come to extinction since the nuclear war"
What nuclear war? Did I sleep through that one?

"This is the closest we've come to extinction SINCE THE NUCLEAR WAR"
Did... Did I miss something? Did all of you have a nuclear war without informing me? 🤷♂️

u/pagusas 16h ago
Why was the wolf guy from Twilight at the end?
2
u/lifeintraining 16h ago
Because Hollywood tried to make him a thing, but nobody was interested so now he does shit like this in a sad little closet.

u/IMakeMyOwnButter 16h ago
Create a “problem” or an illusion of a problem so that you could also create a “solution” or an illusion of a solution

I think people don’t consider that when they say this shit that maybe they’re not talking about LLM’s but some sci fi concept of AI.
Because LLM’s sure ain’t going to do any of that stuff. Cybercrime wave, sure. Extinction? Yeah I doubt it. Notice they never say how that’s going to happen? Nobody even seems to ask them.
It’s just the biggest mountain of bullshit they have come up with yet.

u/DekuInkwell 2h ago
When I hear “AI is going to end humanity” the only thing I can think of is biological warfare. AI can assist in creating super viruses that people then send out into the wild. Maybe manufactured so the viruses only last a month or something, and the rich can hide in their bunkers until it blows over or some shit.
2
u/True_Protection6842 16h ago
If they actually believed this shit they would stop.
13
u/RespectFearless4233 16h ago
Like the cigarette companies who stopped making smokes when they realised how bad they are

u/True_Protection6842 16h ago
Killing individuals is not the same as ending the world. They are claiming it will destroy us so they can write the legislation that lets them control ai and kills smaller and open source. Thats the goal.
1
u/marsinfurs 5h ago
Midterms are about to get swept in a blue wave, any legislation passing would likely constrict OAI and Anthropic more, not kill their competition.

3
u/ElegantCoach4066 15h ago
They just like to sound more important than they are.
What we have now is not 'ai'. These LLMs are only an issue if the people in charge make it one.
It would be like blaming Siri for making you drive into a cemetery and run over the headstones.
3
u/True_Protection6842 15h ago
That is true. It's not AI or SI...it's just machine learning based on a google paper from a decade ago.
1
u/the-breakfast-dog 5h ago
I get what you're saying, but it's a matter of fact that technological advancements can create opportunities for new types of disasters.
Like yes, human levels Hiroshima and Nagasaki, not the bombs themselves. But before the advent of the bombs, destruction on that scale wasn't possible.
5
u/Ok_Intention1222 16h ago
Like the oil companies that knew they were destroying the environment?
0
u/True_Protection6842 16h ago
But they didn't constantly talk about it. What don’t you people understand???
3
u/tutoredstatue95 15h ago
Shell even had proof in the 70s and made the conscious decision to start a public campaign downplaying the impact of fossil fuels. Exactly the opposite of what the AI companies are doing.
0
u/True_Protection6842 15h ago
Yes that's my point. They all tried to hide it. The reason this is different is because this is bullshit. They are fear mongering so they will be given the power to regulate themselves. They want to make it clear AI IS DANGEROUS and only they truly understand how to contain it! They are trying to shut down any good open source competition before it has a chance.

They have access to truly frontier models, 1-2 years ahead of models like Astra and Mythos. I don't see a reason to not believe them.

u/the-breakfast-dog 5h ago
Any given one of them stopping doesn't affect anything though.
If Anthropic's CEO truly believes the warnings and stops, other companies just push onward.
If all companies in the US stop, China continues advancing.
This is just nonsense in the first place.
Would it be unreasonable if someone working on the atomic bomb said "I'm worried about the future consequences of this?" According to you, if they truly believed that, the bomb wouldn't have been made.

They cant stop a development that exists independently all around the world. Unless they have leaders that cooperate all around the world. But they do not, in absolutely none of them. We have these old ass farts that urgently need to stop trying to dictate the world like its the medieval ages, because the world changes continously and they are not at all keeping up with the technology.
Something terrible will have a real opportunity to arise from it and we are slowly not changing course to try to stop it even though it's right there in plain sight.

u/True_Protection6842 14h ago
They can make distribution and use illegal tho.
1
u/Accomplished-Fan9568 13h ago
and keep it for themselves to use exclusively.
its already unleashed anyway. lots of open weight models already sitting on peoples personal PCs

u/dernaldz 16h ago
I had that same pc setup after my parents took away my PC and I was addicted to wow. Snuck back my computer at night and started closet gaming until my dad saw the Ethernet cord running through the hallway

I have no idea why this is good marketing.
Only thing that comes to mind is trying to shift attention.
2
u/gggg_man3 14h ago
They're marketing to the crypto bros. The +50%. The circular funding. A short term (in their lifetimes) bubble they can exploit that when the bubble does pop they will still be able to exist far beyond the wealth of us commoners mostly coz of how they have invested etc.
2
u/Malus_non_dormit 14h ago
Sounds crazy.
The Nigerian price i keep sending money seems like a safer bet
1
u/Sedert1882 7h ago
Well....the current US president has no plans to slow-walk AI till there's a decent chance it won't kill many of us. So.....don't think others will stop this. We must do the stopping.

The problem is the worldview of this people; their head is so deep in the ass of the morbidly obese elephant that is today's capitalism, that their beloved technology giving signs of potentially ending their capacity for exploitation looks like the end of the world for them...

u/pcgamerbob 12m ago
Easy a job done by you today can be done by a machine and can do it wothout salary or insurance or 8hr work week or weekends. Easy profit for the company. Now where would that leave you. A billion deaths is possible due to hunger and death. End of the world not possible. But end of humanity. Highly possible
