I remember getting annoyed anytime my parents touched anything on my plate to make it easier for me to eat.

like the food looks delicious and then someone else starts mixing it up or taking large delicious chunks of meat and cutting them up to 'make it easier'

today i see my friends give their card to their 2-4 year olds to make payments, 'help out' mopping the floor, name every car brand they see (that helps for some reason?), etc.

treat your kid with their understanding of seriousness, it means the world to them

It's not just meaningful....it's critical to their development and future ability to behave (like an adult) in public.

People not doing this during Covid is WHY the Gen Z stare exists, and why they can't count change or the myriad other little social niceties people complain about them for online.

It's not their fault: they are ignorant because society never showed them how.

u/DameKumquat 8h ago

Or they forgot during Covid. A year of lack of doing stuff in society is a long time for a kid age 7 to 13. Mine still can't do things they did just fine before lockdown.

it's an eternity for anyone below 7

My parents and grandparents are still the worst about this. I get that they are trying to be welcoming or whatever, but I can literally see the spread for myself, I don't need them to suggest that I try this that and the other thing, I'm 40 years old and I know what I want to eat. They are still always putting stuff on my plate that I don't want to eat.

I've spoken with them about stuff like this many times, but it never makes a difference, to them I'm the one being difficult for having boundaries.

personally, i don't mind that. i just hit 26 and i only go home once a year. sitting next to my grandfather for dinner is always the best. he keeps scooping something into my plate.

im count every single calorie, but it really makes my day. to each their own ofcourse.

Yea we are going to new Jersey shore next summer. Separate cars and hotel. We meet up do a few things together like dinner. We are together but doing our own thing

Hey can I be left alone for dinner so I have some peace and quiet?

Sure! I’ll just record you behind your back and post it on the Internet!

"I don't understand why my child doesn't talk to me anymore!"- parents in 15 years

16

u/SinoSoul 13h ago

15y? Try 8. Source: I have teens

17

u/asds89 11h ago

This isn’t about the kid becoming a teen and trying to act cooler. This is about a full grown adult cutting ties with their parents because of the way they were treated as children.

The highlight of my day when I was traveling for work weeks at a time was sitting down alone for dinner.

Some wait staff are spectacular and can read body language if you're in the mood for light conversation. Others think because you're alone you are automatically lonely. Never was I lonely. After a long day with executives, it was intentional.

To this day, I prefer to eat alone. In quiet.

u/gerbileleventh 20m ago

Here I was, happy that at least they let him eat alone instead of pulling a "no, we are family and we have to eat together all the time" but you're right. Kid is probably also tired of having a camera in his face all the time.

This kid gets it. Being ok with being alone is a life skill that will serve him well. I still enjoy going to a pub by myself.

u/Adullam_17 13h ago

Now go sit over there so I can make my tik tok.

Okay mom. Then you will come and eat with me right …?

Yeah yeah whatever

u/JefferyTheQuaxly 9h ago

my younger brother was actually the kid that would do stuff like this on cruises. oen cruise we went on literally random people would say hi to him walking by in the hallway that no one knew, including the ships actual captain he had somehow met and got to talking too. would regularly make friends with someone random and eat dinner with them or skip dinner and go hang out somewhere.

I went on a family cruise when I was 13. Found the 24 hr pizza bar and started sneaking out in the middle of the night to eat pizza cuz I was a fat and happy kid. Found out the 3 workers were bored and knew how to play euchre. So we made custom pizzas and played euchre pretty much every night from like 12-5am. My parents were confused as to why I wanted to nap everyday.

This kid knows what he wants in life.

He needed a vacation from the vacation

10

u/DreamingInAMaze 13h ago

He is entering teenage mode. Soon he will say it is embarrassing with his mom and dad in the same photo. Yikes! But we all have been undergone this mode. Life goes on.

3

u/Ultimo_Ninja 12h ago

Vacation is time i spend AWAY form my family.

3

u/piizzogrigio 12h ago

I demanded my own table at twelve because my family drove me nuts, I respect this kid

3

u/Sedert1882 4h ago

Seven day cruise for a pre-teen must be hell. Parents didn't think this through at all.

3

u/Dommiiie 4h ago

My parents visited me in Japan for 2 weeks. I was very happy to see them, but I was also very happy when they were back on the plane again.

4

u/Artorius__Castus 13h ago

This made me think of something (sorry if I am taking a side road here).

I worked at a (self appointment of course) 4⭐ restaurant on a cruise ship as a prep cook and I was absolutely blown away by the amount of money that people we're willing to spend for bland food. It got so bad that I just couldn't do it anymore and quit. Craziest thing we sold was a Spring Pea Shoot Salad with imitation crab on top of it (the restaurant marketed it as real of course) for $35 bucks and seriously the salad was the size of a softball (if that). This was in 2009 the prices are even more outrageous now.

u/advancedSlayer96 11h ago

Half of my suicide attempts were on family vacations, I get you little man

It's the internet, you can fucking swear.

2

u/GullibleCrazy488 6h ago

One time I saw a teenaged girl sitting alone at a huge table on the last day of the cruise. You could tell she had a massive crush on her server.

2

u/SherbertNaive4783 10h ago

Finally he can eat without forks and knives and also can ask whatever he wants, lil guy knows how to live

1

u/refusedisposable 12h ago

He envisioned what he wanted and asked for it. Good for you little guy. Now all the adults need to follow suit.

1

u/musa_velutina 12h ago

Eating alone is easily one of my favorite things to do

8

u/SnoopySuited 13h ago

You want the go-karts and water slide all to yourself.

1

u/BrutalBart 13h ago

I can do without go karts, and I admit it is quite pleasurable to whoop their asses at the arcade

1

u/LifeShelter5646 12h ago

I don't buy this crap.

  1. This is filmed for a TikTok, now the Mom has content for her MomTok universe
  2. Kids should always eat with their families in public outings, whether it be restaurants or cruise ships, etc.
