These posts all have the same issue, they completely don't understand how people lived. They see tv and the brady bunch all flying to hawaii and think everyone did that. I'm 51 and in my childhood eating out was rare, nobody flew anywhere on vacation and people drive the same cars for so long it's how you knew who was coming down the road. The only people I knew who "lived like rock stars" were single males who had no kids and had the boss job at the factory.

At 51, I can kind of see the point though? We didn't fly places or eat out, go on extravagant vacations (went to the beach with grandparents every year, they paid) but my parents bought their first house when they got married, then upgraded to a bigger house in a nice subdivision in 1975. The new house cost 37k. My mom didn't work and my dad made approx 15k a year at the time.

When I was born they had 3 cars. A vista crusier, a 66 chevelle and what ever his other car was. All paid off.

His 15k a year then = 99k now.

When I met my now wife, her dad thought we were rich because we had a house without wheels on it (seriously).
