These posts all have the same issue, they completely don't understand how people lived. They see tv and the brady bunch all flying to hawaii and think everyone did that. I'm 51 and in my childhood eating out was rare, nobody flew anywhere on vacation and people drive the same cars for so long it's how you knew who was coming down the road. The only people I knew who "lived like rock stars" were single males who had no kids and had the boss job at the factory.

Was gonna say growing up eating out at Wendy’s was a special occasion. We rarely ate out and had a lot of essentially hamburger helper, casseroles, etc. Both parents worked full time jobs commuting between 30min and an hour each way to work. It did seem like there was a lot less of everything but that might just be the fact the internet was just getting going so we weren’t inundated with all the marketing and social media bs to perpetuate consumption.

Society has definitely normalized eating out, buying $10 coffees, subscription plans for everything, essentially anything to get money out of people. These aren’t necessities but I feel like society and especially social media has made it seem like it’s completely normal.
