I had a similar experience, and it sounds like we’re around the same age, too.

When I was a kid, my dad let me watch Alien, and the first time I saw the Xenomorph, it left me with such an intense fear that everything else suddenly seemed harmless by comparison. Ghosts, zombies, or standard monsters weren't worth talking about anymore. I developed a genuine, deep-seated fear of extraterrestrials.

As I got older, around 14 to 16, I watched Signs for the first time, and for years, that was the scariest movie in the world to me.

My folks took me to see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was 5. As it was starting, they told me it was a true story. Parenting was very different in the 70's.

Lol. It’s kinda true. Just minus the chainsaw and mostly everything. But the psychopath with mommy issues was real.

The psychopath with mommy issues was actually (very, very loosely) based on real life serial killer Ed Gein. That's why my parents told me that, I found out years later.
