Unpopular opinion: Our children are gifts, they are the future, not here for our amusement or to be terrorized. This is pathetic.

79

u/Impressive_Reality18 17h ago

I feel the same way. I don’t like when people intentionally scare their kids for laughs. I hate it actually.

2

u/Shoo_Fly314 14h ago

People have been telling ghost stories for eons.

5

u/Correct_Chemistry_50 13h ago

Yeah, and the horrors that kids see from stories is limited by their experience, so the stories are 'muted' by comparison of what an adult could imagine.

This is straight up terrifying kids beyond what they could imagine. It's cruel.

1

u/Shoo_Fly314 12h ago

my mother read the Brother's Grimm to me as a kid. it was terrifying. I do not disagree with you. I had lots of fears of ghosts and creatures as a kid.

92

u/Future_Dog8306 16h ago

Is this… abuse?

49

u/Longjumping_College 16h ago

Maybe not in the legal definition, but every one of these parents just permanently lost their kids trust

You cannot repair that, this is absolutely not how you raise kids

11

u/MrDeadbutdreaming 15h ago

You saying that made me think of this.

I saw a thing once, where someone talked about how as we grow up we learn not to trust society, cause as an adult you find out everyone was lying to you about the Easter bunny and Santa Claus, if society will come together to lie about these goofy things why wouldn't they also lie about more serious things.

Honestly, ever since I heard that, I have looked at holidays differently.

Edit: am I remembering a George Carlin set?

2

u/Alert-Theme1145 4h ago

If folks were smart enough to apply that logic to the bigger fairy tales, this world would be a much better place.

4

u/Ren_stevens 14h ago

Permanently? The dramatics

4

u/Straight_Car9819 13h ago

Do you have kids? My 20 yo daughter loooves to remind me about every single time i failed her when she was little. Things i don't even remember doing (or not doing). She remembers everything. So, not sure if that's a exaggeration. My daughter makes it seem like that time i forgot to write her a good luck note on her first day of preschool scarred her for life...

3

u/infinite_in_faculty 12h ago

My sister is like this remembers everything and holds a hard grudge, Lol.

1

u/Straight_Car9819 3h ago

Yep, that sounds about right. The funny thing is that (for the most part) we get along just fine- my daughter's always asking me to hang out with her, wants my opinion on stuff, but when she's mad at life.. oh boy. She pulls out her little "box of memories", and somehow it's always my fault that she's the way she is.
And for the record - i also found this 'trend' appalling. I'd never purposely cause my children anguish like this.

1

u/Ren_stevens 13h ago

I don't know you or you kid. I do know everyone was a kid at some point. Is that how you feel about your parents? If I'm beefing with a parent (& I do), it's not over a harmless prank. Some people are obviously more drastic than others though.

1

u/BaBbBoobie 9h ago

Honestly, depending on what those "failings" are, I can only think of a very limited amount of circumstances where I would do that shit to my parents. No shit you weren't perfect in handling every situation. Neither will she if/when she has kids. That's life.

If your last sentence is true, that sounds so petulant to me. Are you meant to apologize for that?

Something like this video? Give me a break.

0

u/Comfortable-Side1308 14h ago

And "every one".

0

u/Seekersleeker 14h ago

Exactly. This is how immature parents ruin their children by desensitizing them to traumatic occurrences.

Lost their kids trust permanently? That's laughable my parents intentionally tried to scare us and I still trust them. What we don't see here is the parents reassuring their children and I can guarantee based on a few of those kids reactions that they needed more than a few soothing words afterwards. And your probably right that temporarily those kids will not trust their parents who did this but they will get over it eventually as long as it's not a reoccurring thing.

1

u/BigEntertainment4191 2h ago

No they didn't lmao my parents did the same shit during holloween season people are just to fucking sensitive

0

u/WorstSupport4Real 11h ago

Every single one? Permanently? Lmao

0

u/ResultIntelligent856 11h ago

omg what a snowflake take hahaha

19

u/PersonRealHuman 15h ago

Can we please take the phones away from adults.

1

u/RustyBungus 6h ago

Can we please take the man/woman children away from the phones and put them in a box?

2

u/jetpacksforall 10h ago

Well let's see here... they terrified their kids, humiliated them, tricked them, filmed the whole thing and posted it online for fake internet points. I'm not seeing any parenting awards in their future.

2

u/PeopleCallMeSimon 8h ago

Does it have to be abuse to be pathetic and bad?

4

u/CuriousButNotJewish 16h ago

No, pranks are as old as time and most of the people screaming "abuse" are WORD1WORD2NUMBER bots. Yourself included.

3

u/milk_for_dinner 15h ago

Beating your wife and children was also old as time. It's not an argument.

4

u/1_more__user___name 13h ago

So stupid. Let's then forbid all pranks because pranks like beating are as old as time.

0

u/Future_Dog8306 15h ago

I prefer not to damage my children

1

u/surfermark99 14h ago

Yes. It is emotional abuse.

1

u/TJames6210 14h ago

I vote...Yes, yes it is.

1

u/Asleep-Shelter-4456 12h ago

Emotional abuse yeah

0

u/Kvchx 13h ago

Nah it's not abuse, it's being a dick to your kids. It happens sometimes, no one's perfect. As long as you realise it afterward and work it out with your child it's okay.

0

u/Exotic-Ad515 13h ago

Yes it is. Parents are allowed to intentionally terrorize their children.

66

u/Leading_Slice_7799 17h ago

As a new-ish parent, I've come to the incredibly sad realization that too few parents feel this way.

2

u/Kvchx 13h ago

My 7 yo tried a little bit of jalapeno this week, she handled some spicy chips before and I made sure my point was heard before she tries as it is waaayyy worse but that didn't scare her. She cried when she realised I wasn't bluffing and said she regretted it a bit but was glad she did it at the same time.

All this to say I saw a video of a parent give a whole jalapeno to an infant for him to nible on as a prank.

1

u/Leading_Slice_7799 4h ago

The giving of a jalapeno to an infant is abusive. WTF is wrong with people. Social media is so destructive.

2

u/justdandelions 9h ago

Our pediatrician told us he has to remind parents every year that if the child isn’t old enough to understand what a prank is or that the Halloween mask isn’t real… don’t scare your children.

2

u/Direct-Fix-2097 15h ago

Yeah, it’s an unfortunate thing.

1

u/mandoballsuper 9h ago

Parents have always "pranked" their children. The difference now is you have a bunch of uptight weirdos on the internet that have never had a joke played on them even as children.

Before anyone says anything yes my parents did have fun raising me and it included pranks that scared me and guess what I still love them

-6

u/ShadowJory 16h ago

Wait until you have a couple more or until they grow up tocbe little shits.

3

u/ReignCheque 15h ago

Im sorry you raised bad humans. That must be terribly difficult for you.

-2

u/ShadowJory 15h ago

My kid's are awesome. But most people have terrible shitty iPad kid's they don't disapline.

31

u/Correct_Chemistry_50 13h ago

Not unpopular. I'm a father of seven kids, that's SERIOUSLY fucked up....

2

u/No-Clothes-9922 9h ago

Seven kids? Same woman? What you fed her okra or cactus juice?

2

u/Correct_Chemistry_50 8h ago

LOL, two by wife #1.
one by wife #2.
one by wife #3.
Plus 3 steps. :D

And yes, I was custodial parent of all of 'em but the steps. I don't 'hit and run'. ;)
(I'm just ooooooold)

1

u/Ok_Teach6021 25m ago

Oh wow! What’s it like being a father?

5

u/Alvinquest 14h ago

Cuz making your kid scream in terror is fun. I try to get at least one jumpscare per Halloween.

2

u/Edge__Slade 15h ago

Damn you must’ve been really sheltered, I bet you let people cut you off when your talking.

2

u/Infinitesi-Mal 12h ago

I had a severe phobia of a particular horror film growing up. It was bad enough that whenever I used a domestic bathroom I would open the cupboards underneath the sink, and keep them open, and even leave them open after leaving said bathroom, all because I couldn’t stand the mental image of this entity hiding underneath the sink. If anyone within earshot uttered the name of this character I would fall apart into tearful hysterics.

My parents were always loving and protective about it, and that helped greatly. If they had insisted been like these parents I imagine I would still to this day have serious psychological issues and trust issues in my relationships with everyone.

What these parents are doing is not funny. It’s dark.

2

u/CelandineRedux 12h ago

Amen. Fuck these ungrateful pile of shit parents. There are so many people who'd give anything for a healthy child and yet so many of those with children don't see them as they precious gifts they are.

2

u/sapplesapplesapples 6h ago

I would end up fucking my daughter up if I did this. She’s 6, and she’s already so scared of things. I could never.

Plus we didn’t have this shit when we were young. We had ghost stories and movies, which was hard enough as a sensitive child, but not video cameras with filters that look REAL for use to actually think it’s right with us. Who knows how this is messing with them.

5

u/uhoh300 16h ago

Thank you! I won’t forget my mom showing me jumpscare videos as a kid to laugh at me, and that’s not a very flattering way to be remembered. Just another reason I’m glad that she’s gone now ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/KennethDLT98 13h ago

Maybe you didn’t mean it like that?

Sure, I can understand you being glad she’s gone if she was indeed bad. But I’m not sure showing you jumpscares and laughing isn’t one of them.

That is so tame.

1

u/uhoh300 9h ago

Oh don’t worry she was horrible in a lot of ways. That was just one small thing on the long list of reasons I don’t miss her

4

u/IllCelebration4912 15h ago

It’s a joke, we’ve always did pranks on our kids. Y’all get offended by everything

Teach em young

1

u/EitherPath7970 13h ago

your completely right, but it’s still real funny

1

u/Codename-Nikolai 13h ago

Our children maybe not, but I laughed my ass off at these children 😭😭😭

1

u/Granolamommie 13h ago

Idk if that’s unpopular. But I have the same opinion too. this trend grosses me out.

1

u/EverythingSucksYo 13h ago

Want your kids to ask you to check the closet and under their bed every light until they are adults? This is how you do that.

1

u/Arturopxedd 13h ago

Soft

1

u/mefree1960 13h ago

Maybe, but my children knew they could trust me.

1

u/mansonfrque 13h ago

Tbh the parents get what they deserve when their kid has nightmares and fucks their sleep over this “joke”

1

u/bridge_to_valley 12h ago

Yeah this shit makes me sick. I would never scare my daughter like this.

1

u/Meatish_Chef 12h ago

It's too much. I think back on times when I could have inadvertently messed with my kids upbringing. Kids dwell and nightmares are real. This is not playful but potentially traumatizing. If it took more than a minute to calm these kids down afterward, it's way too much and the parent should spend time correcting for this. And think harder next time.

1

u/OkTransportation3196 12h ago

Agree 100 percent. Even the more “harmless” pranks I see parents do on their kids infuriates me. Unless the kid is also having a good time, don’t do it.

1

u/mefree1960 12h ago

I appreciate the awards but they belong to all the great parents and adults alike that commented and choose to allow our children to be children. Loved, safe and supported.

1

u/Calm-Grapefruit-3153 11h ago

Yeah. This is purely for siblings to do to each other, not parents!

1

u/No-thank-you-bud 11h ago

It’s bad. I like to joke around with my kids. Note is wrote WITH them.

1

u/rosa-dos-ventos 11h ago

I'm really glad this actually seems to be a common opinion here. It's horrific to think these people were traumatising their kids for their own amusement and for the amusement of strangers on social media.

1

u/Taskmaster_Fantatic 11h ago

Not unpopular. Just true.

Oh wait, ignore the first part. True is usually unpopular.

1

u/riorioriver 11h ago

Jim Hensen once said in safe environments like this, this is healthy. When asked about terrorizing and scaring children after them seeing the Dark Crystal. He replied, he would be more concerned about a child who is never afraid.

1

u/Ms_Behave3967 11h ago

That’s absolutely terrible! What kind of person would want to see that look on their child’s face?

1

u/tacobaeKL 10h ago

Popular opinion: terrorize the children for passing amusement on TikTok and laugh as the future generations are emotionally damaged.

1

u/itsallcosmica 9h ago edited 8h ago

Exactly , adults are gross and mean. Trust lost.

Edit: I didn’t watch any of this with audio, just can’t 🙁

1

u/DataSurging 8h ago

Agreed.

This isn't funny. It's terrorizing them. It's not even like faking to take your nose or some shit, it's just pure terrorizing, and for the sake of video views....

1

u/Afraid-Woodpecker664 7h ago

I'm glas I didn't have to look long for this comment. Its crazy complains so much about their parents (me included) but do shit like this. If I ever found out my wife was mentally torturing my kids for social media... I might have to take the kids.

1

u/Alex_AU_gt 7h ago

Not unpopular opinion, the correct opinion.

1

u/kitten12551 6h ago

Why would that be unpopular?

1

u/mefree1960 5h ago

Clearly there are people who do this for amusement and think it's funny. I realize there are a lot of people who have a different life experience and will think I'm a downer. We all see things in the light of our own experiences after all.

Its fear within healthy boundaries. Without it how can a person ever learn to understand fear?  Coddling makes things worse because by the time they turn into adults, if they never experienced trauma within a safe space then they will be blindsided on how to deal with it.

1

u/ladyblue___ 3h ago

Yes it’s a very unpopular opinion; you brought them here to suffer so better prepare them young instead of treating them like fragile creatures and let them learn the hard way when they go out into the real world.

1

u/trampaboline 17h ago

“Unpopular opinion” man shut the fuck up.

Right, leave it to the uncles and grandparents to terrorize the children

1

u/Scared-Specialist-82 15h ago

This. I never even wanted kids and love my child free life but they are precious and I don't find this funny at all. It's torture and low key sick and emotional abuse.

0

u/floare_salbatica 16h ago

I trully believe there should be some tests to pass before becoming a parent.

0

u/Send_me_your_butt_ 16h ago

Yeah ive got a kid due in April and cant imagine ever wanting to do something like this to her

0

u/WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch 16h ago

Same folks wonder why kids don't like them.

"If someone kept scaring you/playing tricks on you, you wouldn't like them either, would you?"

1

u/Ren_stevens 14h ago

Yes, I'm sure this random tiktok trend is a daily occurrence for them.

0

u/domesticg33k 16h ago

If this is an unpopular opinion I'm right there with you. Shit like this makes me so freaking angry.

0

u/LongJelly311 15h ago

Absolutely tragic!

0

u/Commercial_Survey275 15h ago

The one boy will never wash his hands again!

0

u/ConditionInformal 15h ago

Agreed. These kids are in for a tough f*cked up life.

I'm glad I didn't grow up with a smartphone in my hand.

0

u/Spoinkydoinkydoo 15h ago

I agree with you, but saying it’s a unpopular opinion is so annoying

0

u/picklesuitpauly 15h ago

People don't understand that in the slightest. They'll say "the world's tough might as well get used to it" and then do weird shit like this. I would take a beating before doing this to my own or essentially any other kid. People love treating kids like little adults, but they're not.

0

u/esquqred 14h ago

This reminds me of the trend a few years ago of people dressing up like the Grinch and going ape shit on kids presents and absolutely traumatizing for people's amusement. Absolutely sick that their parents thought it would be funny.

0

u/eggsforpedro 14h ago

This is the popular opinion.

0

u/VersionAcceptable667 14h ago

What the heck is wrong with people?!

0

u/thelandofwine 14h ago

👏👏👏 YES, agreed!

0

u/Comfortable-Side1308 14h ago

I fuck around with my kids all the time. This is waaaaaaay too far.

0

u/Ren_stevens 14h ago

Children are the result of sex. It's ok to play a simple prank on them. With that being said, this trend is corny.

0

u/Sudden_Choice9662 14h ago

It's super weird to intentionally traumatize your child for your own amusement. This is something I would expect an older sibling to do.

0

u/Shoo_Fly314 14h ago

Your children are not your children
They are the sons and daughters of life longing for itself
They come through you, but they are not from you
and while they are with you they belong not to you

- The Prophet

0

u/IndestructibleBliss 13h ago

Thank you. Glad this is the top response. These people are doing a great job breaking trust with their children. Bet they'll wonder years later why they went no contact 🤔

0

u/Logicalist 13h ago

we have children together?

0

u/Top-Artichoke-5875 12h ago

Maybe this kind of stunt is the reason people go no contact with their parents?

"But we were only joking!"
