Aren't you sick of it yet? Aren't you sick of being marketed at and commercialed every where you go, and for everything you do? Haven't you had enough billboards, enough ads, enough commercials, enough gas pump videos, just enough advertising? Aren't you sick of money being the only thing that is important?
I have always been a massive fucking sport fan. Recently I have zero interest. The constant ads, the personalities of the presentors and players, the constant ask (at least in Chicago) for tax payer funds to build a stadium for billionaires so they can make even more money off the backs of regular people. Everything about sports has become disgusting to me.
Also love the premier league... And all the shit about city has my passion and love of that waning. Everything is a fucking sham. NO I'm not fucking buying a bears hoodie for 120 dollars.
I’m leaning more and more in this direction - what’s crazy is there’s somehow a market that remains and pushes even higher ticket prices, insane merch costs, etc… at some point it seems that there’s a end but then another year rolls by and the economy is worse yet the demand has yet to drop off for live sports
My HS streams all their games on Friday nights. They’re a good team. It’s the only football I watch now. 2 hour commitment on Friday night after the baby goes down. Fuck the NFL and College FB.
I think this is where sports fans should direct their attention now. Love the game. Go local to something that's less corrupted, whether it's high school or your closest MLB farm team, etc.
Yeah, the TN Titans are the worst team in the NFL. Not a single win this season and some of the worst football I’ve ever seen on any level. Yet, we are building them a stadium that costs tens of billions of dollars, holds less fans, and the seat licenses and ticket prices are skyrocketing in price. Someone said their PSLs used to cost like 6k and next season they will be nearly 25k.
Meanwhile my kids high school team is infinitely more dynamic and entertaining to watch, and costs a few dollars to attend.
I’m right there with you. About the only sport we watch anymore in my house is women’s college volleyball. My wife played and got me watching. It’s actually really fun to watch.
I had season tickets for Purdue when I lived in Indiana. I think people underweight how entertaining volleyball is because of the downtime, but it's kind of perfect as a live sport. Plus, as a gambling addict I appreciate any sport that was really hard to gamble on
Not an alumni, but I was working there for a while and Big ten volleyball is legitimately amazing (and Purdue is pretty good). One of my coworkers had tickets with his wife, but half the time I went with him and eventually I just bought my own. I follow this woman on Twitter, Emily Ehman, who in an expert and taught me everything I needed to know.
I wound up working with a woman whose father, brother and sister all coach/ coached D1 volleyball and we keep an ongoing chat during the season.
You express it well. What this is causing me to do is focus more locally - go to local bands, local theatre, local sports, and put the money in the hands of people who are doing it well on a smaller, more local level.
We watch the bears but we pretty much only pay for the Blackhawks on Chsn now. $20/mo, i can’t even bring myself to pay the extra $10/mo for the bulls. Hockey is pretty wholesome, and the helmets mean you can’t see the players complain constantly(they still do, just you can’t see it like with body language in nba)
I agree with all of this. MLS is pretty good about not asking for public money for stadiums and not allowing its franchises to spend hundreds of millions under the table
its not sports ,its usa and its the capitalism here has become toxic asf. eveything is money, eveything else does not matter.from healtcare to food to sports ,eveything made worse o push for more money
It’s kinda refreshing to see somebody say this. The only reason I watch sports is to spend time with my dad. He has been battling cancer for many years and his body is too worn down to do much, but we’ve always bonded over sports. If not for him, there’s no way I’d sit through these commercials to watch millionaires play for billionaires while myself and my neighbors continue to struggle more and more with each passing year.
I think you just made me realized I stopped watching hockey when they put the area targeted adds on the walls. I remember seeing that and being like wtf is this, fuck that. And I haven't really watched it since. I used to watch a lot more sports and have slowly fallen out from it anyway, I also hate commercials and dont' watch cable anymore. I really only watch youtube premium, and some netflix as its all i can stand. Shit, i hated tranfsormers with all of its product placement, I don't even watch movies anymore. I hate how its so obvious too. I'm starting to really dislike how content creators are now embedding adds into their videos now too by 'sponsors'. Like tf, i paid for a premium subscription to not see these.
I've been saying for years we should outlaw billboards. They just seem like huge pieces of litter to me.
Shift your fandom to the Bundesliga, where every club must have their club members having 50%+1 voting rights on the club board. Might I suggest my favorite team in that league, SC Freiburg? Or my dad’s team, Borussia Dortmund? Or if you are a hipster: St Pauli
I could not handle watching sports if I lived in America. I watch Indycar in Sky in the UK and I only really got into it in the last couple of years because before then we only had the US feed. We didnt get the adverts thank God, but, because we were relying on the US commentary, every few minutes, it seemed, we would get just the sound of the cars because the US network had gone to commercials. And if you’re trying to get into a sport then repeatedly losing the commentary is a pain because you don’t know what is happening. We have our own commentator now who steps in every time we lose the American team. If it’s that annoying without even having to watch the commercials I think I’d be throwing something at the tv if I did have adverts.
UK TV has adverts at the start and end of races or, in sports with halves or quarters or whatever, between the periods of play. We don’t go to adverts during the match/race or whenever they have a time out or whatever. We have adverts before, after, and either side of the halftime show for the Super Bowl and that is it. No breaks in motor racing unless there is a red flag when, if it’s a very long one, they might go for adverts (not usually but if it’s for something they know will be long they sometimes do). When ITV had the f1 rights they tried in race adverts - it was universally hated and the Gods themselves seemed to have it out for ITV because you could guarantee if they went for a break when they came back you’d have a different number of cars left in the race or a dramatic change of lead that had happened off air.
We tend to use the ad break to make tea or coffee - power stations even prepare for the surge they will get at half time in a big football game.
