That’s not the reason. It’s the mechanism. We can control what we care about, but the reason why people choose to care about something inconsequential like this is that it’s a low stakes social transgression they can use to reaffirm their own place in the social hierarchy by attacking her in the comments. She is a “Karen” (not true but that doesn’t really matter) and therefore by detailing her “bad behavior” commenters feel better about themselves and can validate each other by agreeing that they would never do something as horrendous as this woman. Partially because they are better than her, but mostly because they never will leave Mom’s basement. (See I’m doing it too!!)
