Remember the iPhone app that used the accelerometer to make it look like you were drinking a beer? Simpler times. I feel old.

u/Raptor22c 5d ago

Remember the stapler app? Where you'd tap the screen and it'd make a stapler sound and would keep a score of how many times you stapled?

Man, I kind of miss useless apps like that. They were a fun novelty.

u/Jonnyscout 3d ago

Now it's all just incremental idle games that you've gotta fork over money or watch ads to play for longer than 5 minutes at a time

25

u/traFyssuP 4d ago

I had the first gen iPod touch and this was like one of the only apps I thought was cool at the time ๐Ÿ˜‚ how times have changed!

15

u/StarConsumate 4d ago

I just miss the simple paper toss game

2

u/DrDingsGaster 4d ago

My ipod touch still has it downloaded!

13

u/Adkit 4d ago

Wasn't that like the most downloaded app of all time?

6

u/Faykod 4d ago

Exactly what i was thinking about

The next version of iBeer with real time beer physics is gona go so hard

1

u/PassiveMangoes 4d ago

Yes beautiful times

u/Lenn_4rt 4d ago

iBeer

u/TheRealVulle 4d ago

Yeah running a fluid simulation app, on the first gen iPod Touch in 2007, was a fun way to show people the tech.ย

8

u/-j4ckK- 4d ago

It was actually just a prerecorded video

The depth effect looks really good, does that work because the view/camera is in a relatively stable position above? I would imagine that the illusion breaks if your observer looks from the side.

193

u/nathan82 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yep if your position changes it breaks the illusion. Relies on two factors to work - people tend to keep their head still when using their phone, and the most likely orientation on launch is flat along the view direction. That becomes the frame of reference for the rotation. Holds up ok for short periods. Obviously eye tracking would work a lot better but nobody wants background apps using their camera.

You should try this out on a looking glass display. have the looking glass go, it's a small display with a stereoscopic 3d effect that works from any viewpoint, it'd look sick on that

6

u/nathan82 4d ago

That would be very cool, for sure! Not sure how fast you could stream frames from the PC to the looking glass, and you'd probably need to stick an external accelerometer/gyro sensor to it. I'm anticipating someone coming out with a glasses free 3D phone in the next year or two, thats where it will really shine hopefully.

u/BantedHam 5d ago

I used to take my cameras and mics out until I got Graphene, now I just refuse access

10

u/Evilsushione 5d ago

Someone should make a home screen like this

7

u/nathan82 4d ago

๐Ÿ‘€

31

u/mendrique2 4d ago

Make a game where your job is to sink a ship but not shake the phone too much!

8

u/nathan82 4d ago

That would be cool! I actually haven't tried combining rigid body physics with the fluid sim yet, not entirely sure it'll work fast enough, or at all. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

u/nicocarbone 5d ago

Can you share an APK?

44

u/nathan82 5d ago

Don't want to self promote plus this design isn't in the app yet, hopefully soon. Just got it working today. Let me know if you want a DM when this one gets added

2

u/Mozzia 4d ago

I'd like a DM, looks sick

2

u/fezzzster 4d ago

Yes please!! Great work

2

u/epicsexfart 4d ago

Can ya shoot me a dm also pls

Wouldn't mind messing with it

2

u/uncovery 4d ago

Yes please!

2

u/ZestyTurtle 4d ago

Hi, please dm if you have time. I am really curious for an apk or src on gh. Thanks

9

u/nathan82 4d ago

This will be a commercial app unfortunately, no source available. It's a full wallpaper engine in 60k+ lines of C, five years of work to make it battery efficient. If it makes me enough to retire comfortably I'll open source it. ๐Ÿ˜„

3

u/ZestyTurtle 4d ago

Ok well as a mark of transparency: don't send me the APK then because my intention was to decompile it to understand it.

I did not realize the effort behind it. Good lord. Good job.

3

u/nathan82 4d ago

Eh, anyone will be able to do that straight from the Play store soon enough, no worries. ๐Ÿ™‚ If there's anything specific you want to know about, I may or may not be able to tell you. And if you ever do end up decompiling the release version I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts. โค๏ธ

2

u/yaktoma2007 4d ago

Yes please

2

u/Leather_Chip_8882 4d ago

Iโ€™d like to download this too please!

2

u/ne2cre8 2d ago

Me too ๐Ÿ™‚

1

u/nathan82 2d ago

Soon! โ„ข๏ธ

The response has been crazy, trying to get a week off work so I can finish it up quicker and get this on the play store.

2

u/nossida 2d ago

Me three

1

u/dark-cosmos 3d ago

Please DM me, too. Thanks

2

u/bozog 5d ago

Yes please.

u/Justgetmeabeer 4d ago

Y'all are the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet if you install a random APK some one dms you from a reddit post ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

37

u/nathan82 4d ago

Hey so everyone who asked for a DM when this is released, I'll definitely message you all but it'll probably be a few weeks. Great motivation to have all this interest, thanks so much. โค๏ธ

Iโ€™m looking forward to iBeer2. But actually thatโ€™s so sick

9

u/Mercy--Main 4d ago

now use the camera and a warping effect for the background, recolor the fluid to yellow, and you've got an advanced beer drinking app lol

9

u/hex128 5d ago

Blender?

36

u/wearetheboysthatdig 5d ago

That's a cellphone

12

u/AemondsEye 5d ago

But will it blend?

3

u/BantedHam 5d ago

Let's find out! Here at the Jory Caron Laboratory, safety is our number one concern. And that's why we hide behind this big tinfoil shield. It's to protect our nuts, because nobody likes roasted nuts!

11

u/nathan82 5d ago

Android ๐Ÿ˜Š

5

u/BantedHam 5d ago

Um, actually, it's only an android if it's modeled after a male human. If it's modeled after a particular kitchen appliance, it's a blendroid.

5

u/BruhInTheMaking 5d ago

Which liquid solver does this use?

3

u/nathan82 4d ago

A variation of FLIP optimised for mobile GPU compute.

4

u/Daedroh 5d ago

This reminds me of early day iPod touch apps๐Ÿฅฒ those were some really cool creative times for apps

3

u/freakywaves 5d ago

I wanna try it on my ohone

3

u/Celestial__Bear 4d ago

Oh this rules, well done

3

u/FoxlyKei 4d ago

would really love to try this myself, so damn cool.

3

u/cos4ni2s 1d ago

Does it use motion sensors? gyroscope?

2

u/nathan82 1d ago

Yes, gyroscope and accelerometer

2

u/awenrivendell 5d ago

This is awesome! Please add some people in pool donuts in that wave pool.

2

u/Yourownhands52 4d ago

That is really cool.ย  Thank you for sharingย

2

u/Iamglennn 4d ago

I remember something like this being a geforce demo 15/20 years ago.. really cool

2

u/LeetLurker 4d ago

What's the mathematical method behind it ? How physically correct ?

4

u/nathan82 4d ago

It's a grid holding mass and momentum (that's the sim's "resolution"), and particles holding position only (particle count affects surface quality mainly).

It's fairly correct, the main issue is fluid "stiffness". Water is effectively incompressible at normal atmospheric pressure, but you need a lot of sim steps to take the bounce out, because it's always overshooting otherwise. So that's why it looks kinda loose. Basically the sim does as many steps as it can fit in the frame budget, so it'll sacrifice accuracy to keep up the sim speed.

3

u/LeetLurker 4d ago

Great work thank you !

2

u/xtoc1981 4d ago

you could add a ship or other things jus for fun

2

The Pool Rooms in the palm of your hand!

2

u/Gabrunken 2d ago

I NEED TO DOWNLOAD IT

2

u/AnToMegA424 1d ago

This is incredible

Looks like a fun project to do, Imma try someday :D

4

u/Adkit 4d ago

Big whoop, I can do the same thing with just a bottle of water.

1

u/Leather_Chip_8882 4d ago

If this is available to the public I would download in a heartbeat thatโ€™s really cool ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

1

u/ChronicEverlasting 4d ago

This is cool bro!

1

u/dKatsuro 4d ago

I'd love a variant of this for a live wallpaper (and murder my battery).

1

u/The_Dr_B0B 3d ago

Question out of curiosity, how hard would it be to have the front camera track the eye position and adjust the image accordingly?

2

u/nathan82 3d ago

I did implement that actually but ended up taking it out! A few issues.

First, the front camera FOV isn't wide enough. As soon as you start rotating the phone you lose tracking because the camera isn't pointed at your eyes any more - and besides that you're just constantly losing tracking, even using ARCore libraries.

Second, without knowing the exact lens geometry of each phone's camera, getting a true device-relative eye position is very difficult.

But the real killer is that nobody wants their wallpaper app to open the camera, ever. Shame because when it worked it was pretty cool. You could put the phone flat on a table and the view would stay correct as you moved your head.

In a few years when phones with real 3D screens come out, this won't be an issue. They'll likely have hardware eye tracking built in.

1

u/The_Dr_B0B 3d ago

Thanks for the response! Makes a lot of sense. And god hear you for those 3D screen lol
