Shield 2 when
NVIDIA please!
all I need is the same exact thing but with 2.5GbE, AV1 and HDMI 2.1. I keep checking rumors every week. Anyone else holding their breath?

Nvidia is done with the consumer market, they don't care about gamers and they don't care for TV boxes, let's move on.

I may be naive but I'm hoping they'd still want some kind of presence outside AI datacenters

Lets see, before the AI boom they were worth about 88 billion give or take, and now they are worth about 5.53 Trillion
We ain’t gonna see a Shield 2.

That's gaming and you can argue the RTX Spark. Shield was never going to be a mainstream product. Most people are fine with their smart TV or a cheap player, not a (used to be) $200 one.

Wont happen unless there is an AI crash and the bubble bursts
2
u/CorrectPeanut5 6d ago
That's an "unless". It's a "when". Too much money went into it. There's going to be winners and losers.

u/JimmerFredJune2026 5d ago
Do you think AI just completely vanished when your supposed bubble burst? lol.
Did the internet vanish during the dotcom bubble? Did banks just completely stop providing home owners with mortgages during the housing crisis?
1
u/Fabulous-Local-1294 5d ago
Why are you assuming what i think? I believe if the bubble bursts demand will go down significantly until it recovers or an alternative business model is developed.
During that time Nvidia might do a new shield. But even then im not holding my breath.

u/CzarDM 6d ago
I think it's time for you to accept the reality
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
I guess so. Minipc it is then.
2
u/darwinpolice 6d ago
Yep, this is the way to go. Mini PC, some lightweight Linux distro, and a media center-friendly desktop environment.

u/0xe3b0c442 6d ago
I mean, at this point we should at least wait for HDMI 2.2 and VVC, don't you think?
1
u/AdUnfair9248 6d ago
If we're waiting, we might as well keep waiting for USB-C to be widely adopted on TVs. Perhaps we should wait for GDDR8? What else should we wait for?
1
u/reallynotnick 6d ago
VVC should be doable today as there are devices with hardware decoding (now if anyone will use it, that’s yet to be seen).

u/buffaloclaw 6d ago
Please take a breath. If you keep holding your breath waiting for any kind of refresh, you will suffocate.

u/Zod5000 6d ago
It's been so long since a new revision, and the fact they jacked up the price on the 2019 model. I'm not sure if a new one is coming, but my current one works well enough. I would absolutely buy a new one if it was an option.
1
u/ExpressTumbleweed195 6d ago
When one didn't come out after the Switch 2 did I knew it never would.
1
u/Kraevin99 6d ago
I waited for years for them to release a hardware revision and finally just ended up getting a homeatics 4k plus, don't regret it one bit and haven't looked back.
-2
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
Can it reliably stream 4k@120 HEVC or AV1?
2
u/Kraevin99 6d ago
4k at 60, shield doesn't do 4k at 120 either though. It does 1080 and 1440 at 120. And yes to av1.
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
The shield doesn't, hence this post :D I want to upgrade to 120 FPS
1
u/Kraevin99 6d ago
I don't think there are even any main stream boxes that do 120 at 4k honestly. Probably will need a computer for it.
The reason I mainly changed from shield was due to av1 and I was getting tired of the dolby vision issues I was having with the box.

In this market, with ram, storage and even mid-tier CPUs through the roof?
It was never likely, but now with what’s going on, heck no.

u/Yourdataisunclean 6d ago
Based on previous reporting there is a possibility in the future if engineers who really care about the shield come up with a design they want that makes sense as a product. That's how the original shield was born and eventually sold. Its the reason why Nvidia is still making shields, but not releasing new ones.
1
u/kaelaria 6d ago
the only way they will make new consumer boxes is if they figure out how to tie them in to THEM making money off AI.
1
u/RobutNotRobot 6d ago
They are literally one of the top market capitalization companies in the world due to the AI scam.
I doubt their CEO ever thinks about the consumer streaming hardware market. He might not even remember that they sell them.

If they made a shield 2 it would be filled with Ai, ads, microphones, and spyware and cost $800. You don't want a shield 2 to be developed right now you just don't realize it.

They gave up on that years ago. Dipped their toes in and saw that people really wanted it so they left. As a matter of fact the Shield has only gotten worse over the years. The updates just make it bloated.
Get a mini pc. Especially if you need 2.5 gigabit. Maybe give up on HDMI because there are licensing issues here and there related to it. Even a used business desktop mini will blow away the nvidia shield for ~$200.
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
I can probably give up 2.5G but HDMI 2.1 is a must have for a meaningful upgrade (60->120 FPS is a big thing for me)
1
u/AdUnfair9248 6d ago
I have good news for you. There is almost no difference between Displayport and HDMI once you're in. If your monitor has a displayport port then you're more than likely going to get the same experience these days.
I have 3 monitors that get between 120-144 fps on either Displayport or HDMI and another that gets 500+ fps.
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
I have a 4k @ 240Hz OLED monitor for desktop gaming (DP 2.1 tho), I use the shield for TV gaming in another room. Going from 240 to 60fps blows

u/AdUnfair9248 6d ago
You're where I was years ago. And even recently I booted up the shield to mess around and found it to be much better for gaming than my TV by itself. Unfortunately it's still just android. Even the latest updates and the latest apps can't overcome that.
My TV gaming setup is now Batocera. It looks and feels like an arcade in the main menu, but it can boot into Steam and almost anything else you can think of in Linux. It's all I wanted in an entertainment center. There are no compromises on performance or ease of use.
I would be very much interested in testing Batocera on the nvidia shield TV pro, but honestly it only has 3GB RAM and that's pathetic. It does a lot with it. That's just not enough machine for $200-300. These days for $300 you can get a used mini pc with 16GB RAM that will run laps around the nvidia shield. This is a decision I would make again so fast.
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
But that seems to be for retrogaming (I use a modded 3DS for that :D). For "regular" gaming I have a PC with 5090 and I prefer to let that thing earn its keep. Just need to stream its output to a TV in another room at the highest framerate humanly possible.
1
u/AdUnfair9248 6d ago
That makes sense in your case. You'll get pretty good latency in your case as well if done right.
1
u/Fit-Departure5678 6d ago
This is not fact, just your personal opinion, the fact is only Nvidia knows the answer, now isn't the right time to introduce a new shield, it would be very expensive due to hardware prices currently. My shield is running sweet as always, it has not hit worse at all. A mini pc is the answer for you, not for all, can you in one UI access official apps like netflix, Apple TV, BBC iPlayer alongside your other apps? With Dolby vision and atmos? Does it output lossless passthrough, can it play profile 7?, can it upscale? Cec? Afr? All without massive tinkering and workarounds? Nah you are fine, my tiny little shield pro does all this by default. Mini pc is perhaps more powerful on paper, but the shield is still king. So your claim blow away the shield is seriously flawed.
1
u/AdUnfair9248 5d ago
The pro is still the best set top box you can buy because of the hardware combo and the ease-of-use out of the box. That's why it makes no sense why everyone says it's dead. I could have had this same conversation 5 years ago word for word up until this point. Now only disappointment is left.
A mini PC typically can't do all of those things. I'm using proxmox and output is kinda what I want it to be. The setup I'm using is really not for beginners. That's where set top boxes like the shield win. The shield wins in the user experience department for most users.
The shield deserves an upgrade but the current RAM economy caused them to raise the price to $299. It only has 3GB LPDDR4. There's no way that I'm going to replace a device that has seen 0 upgrades in 7 years with a 50% price increase.
In the end I am thankful that the shield uses android because porting everything is quite simple.

Tell me which miniPC supports CEC and Dolby vision/atmos and I will go buy one.
1
u/AdUnfair9248 1d ago
Full CEC support is not there in my testing. I got CEC support through a cable and it was a complete accident. I have 2 Batocera setups and one of them has CEC support because of an active DisplayPort to HDMI cable that I bought over 5 years ago. Made by Cable Creation.
It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I realized CEC support requires some sort of hardware component. It's hard to say for certain but I believe this will be solved by software in the future once more people adopt mini PCs and see it for the problem it truly it is.
All of that to say I'm confident that in 1-5 years it should be more common. Probably support at the OS level with older hardware.
I'm not using Dolby Vision or Atmos, but the same logic applies. I'm using Proxmox. Too much is possible with hardware emulation.

Then miniPCs are not a viable replacement for any kind of streaming box.
1
u/AdUnfair9248 8h ago
Absolutely false. What do you think an Nvidia Shield is? Android (Linux) tricked into thinking it's a "Set top box".
If you believe that technology can never advance then you are right where you belong (lost and looking for a solution). Stay right where you are and get left behind.
Sorry for being rude but time will do the rest of the speaking.

Again, point me to a miniPC with CEC support.
I will go buy one. Without it, it’s not a viable replacement for a Streaming box.

Why do you need 2.5GbE?
-4
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
I'm streaming 4k games from my PC via sunshine+moonlight and while the bandwidth required is nowhere near 2.5G, I'm having occasional rx packet discards (probably) due to the some milisecond bursts. Doesn't happen on a 2.5G minipc. Secondary reason: I'm a nerd and my home network backbone is 10G and I'd like to phase out 1G whenever possible. Recently moved from streaming over wifi to wired and it's night and day.
2
u/ExpressTumbleweed195 6d ago
I stream 4K Remux from my server on the other side of the world on a 1GB fiber connection and Wifi 5. No way 1gb network port is your bottleneck.
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
It isn't. Streaming is buttery smooth, both 80GB+ remuxes and games. But having 2.5GbE means 0 errors in grafana. This is a nitpick, I don't strictly need 2.5G but I do want it :)
1
u/ExpressTumbleweed195 6d ago
Yeah I wouldn't trust an AI app for errors lol. If you're having zero issues what are the errors?
1
u/xardas_eu 6d ago
What AI app? I'm monitoring all my switches using SNMP and piping the metrics to grafana via prometheus. No AI involved

u/ethanjscott 6d ago
Well the switch two is out, so that was the first requirement. But considering the prices of stuff lately, 2029?

u/acabincludescolumbo 6d ago
Nvidia can't hear you over the sound of billions of AI Dollars flowing in. Sorry.
