I paid a drummer to follow the annoying preacher around. Totally worth it.

But how long are we talking? Might need more than one so they can trade off.. tromboning nonstop for too long is rough on the face & lungs (I'd make it maybe 5 mins total these days)

I was gonna say tuba but, you’re right. Bagpipes would be much better!!

21

I think the tuba has been retired from downtown since the Tuba guy passed away. I think bagpipes would be fantastic. If there’s a gofundme to pay for bagpipers I’d donate.

I'd love to see how they react to a speech jammer.  Maybe op can find someone with a portable speaker setup with a parabolic mic.  Or even just try it with a generic mic and speaker set, something you can point at somebody's face and have the playback arrive as loud as they sound to themselves.

So I grew up in Shoreline and if you didn't know, the mascot for Shorelines High School is Scottish. They have a bagpipe band and all (at least, I hope that's still the case). Once upon a time, over a decade ago while living still living in an apartment, some kid came into the parking lot and played the Imperial March on his bagpipes. It was pretty awesome.

I vote for Imperial March.

I have a half baked idea of making this a regular thing through crowdfunding. If people would donate a little money into a fund, I would collect it and pay musicians to follow this guy around for 1-2 hours before games/events. Any unused funds would be donated to a relatable cause or refunded to the original donator. I would make it as transparent as possible with receipts and statements. If you would support this fund, upvote/comment on this to help me gauge interest.

265

u/XenithShade Capitol Hill 2h ago

unused funds can just sit in the account for the next event. You can make the account statements transparent and would improve the rep of the funds being paid to said musician and for holding it for the cause.

If you have a way to possibly live stream these events maybe you could get more notice and a wider audience donating as well? People could see what their money could be going towards, and others could possibly see themselves at the event that would be helping? You could also have the donations set for how many hours the event is or how long someone stays etc. And if it gets ended earlier they can be refunded the rest or have it put towards the next event or donate it? Idk might be stupid but just some thoughts I had.

I've had some recurring comment themes so I'll just summarize my response here:

  • "Just blast a megaphone/jammer/feedback loop back at him to trip him up" - I feel like this wouldn't add value to the already chaotic environment. At least with music, the crowd would enjoy that part.
  • "Different instruments would be loud" - Yes, part of my idea is to cycle through different types of instruments/bands - bagpipes, brass, drum line, mariachi, etc. I would need to gather a collection of players who'd be willing to sign up and agree to my budget
  • "You need more people" - I agree. This was the initial experiment. If I have enough funds and people to play, ideally, I'd like at least 2 players that can follow him around.
  • "This is pointless" - Maybe with that attitude...
  • "Just smash his speaker" - I don't want anybody to get sued for assault here. Let's keep this fun and entertaining.
  • "Just ignore them" - Where's the fun in that?
  • "Can I donate to this?" - I'm trying to think of an easy and fully transparent way of doing this so that people don't think I'm scamming them.

With that being said, I gotta say, the drummer was a BEAST. He drummed for over an hour straight! That drum looked heavy. The preacher was also relentless. He did not stop for one bit.

Edit - also want to add that this may have to wait until next year. I'm in the middle of a move and then will be doing some traveling until the end of the year. So I can't facilitate for a while.

Edit 2 - this was a proof of concept social experiment. I need more volunteers (sorta volunteers, you'll be paid) so DM me if you're intersted!

•

u/ScientificSkepticism 48m ago

If you want to really put in work, try a bagpiper. Drums are decent, but can get drowned out. The only thing that might drown out a bagpipe is an aircraft taking off. Ask a local curling club, they should know one.

Also it's not electronically amplified, it's all natural through the power of being really, really unbelievably fucking loud.

u/doctorsirus 24m ago

I live here in western Washington close enough to this. Good job with the drum. Drowned him right out. My God, has the guy any self-respect? He probably thinks it’s a sin. This is the worst type of “Christian“ there is!
I think a trumpet would be awesome! Play some Louie!!! Big band stuff! They’ll be people dancing all around him. He won’t be able to get that megaphone loud enough. Drown his nonsense out.

You know one I've noticed from a lifetime of public speaking as the most annoying sound: it to have your own voice replayed very briefly after you speak. Your brain becomes confused and you can't keep speaking. You would see this with a PA system with or listening to your voice replayed from a transmission.

It’s really sad that amplified musical instruments are not allowed, but amplified hate speech is.

So what that means we need more acoustic instruments that are loud as fuck. I’m happy to play a marching drum if anyone can provide them. The bass drum in this video doesn’t drown the asshole’s voice out enough; we need a whole ensemble.

Edit: I’m serious, I will drum loud, hard, and fast, for free, I just need access to a marching drum. To see just how disruptive I can be, see here. I’ll make his face melt.

15

u/disharmony-hellride 🐀 Hot Rat Summer 🐀 2h ago

It's also a great way for an acoustic band to get some exposure, provided they can march and play at the same time

12

u/western_red_cedar 2h ago

Bring amplified instruments and make them actually enforce it. The laws are based on decibel levels so I don't think there is some sort of megaphone loophole. If there is than everyone should bring megaphones and do a poetry reading. What's good for the goose is good for the gander

Why can't we pass a public ordinance to stop this bullshit. It's not free speech, it's internally trying to upset people

•

u/MidSinglesInYourArea Everett 33m ago

So, think about the government we (as in America in general, not just Seattle) have right now. And think really hard about the ramifications of loosening the protections around freedom of speech, and potential implications of allowing the government to ban what it defines as hate speech.

These assholes suck, but the unintended consequences of stopping them via law are way worse.

•

u/Elegant_Trouble_474 23m ago edited 17m ago

I believe there is an ordinance about how many decibels the speaker can be. There was an article about this a few months or so ago (or maybe last season). The problem is the cops won’t enforce the noise ordinance. They cannot (and should not) prohibit the free speech, but they can definitely do something about how loud these mf’ers are.

Seems like 60 decibels is the limit for this situation.

How much was it? I’m not there but I’ll buy a shift if he’s willing to go it again. Gladly.

Had anyone tried playing back at him his own voice with a slight delay?

•

u/Fungalbonk 1h ago

LMFAO!! That’s such a diabolical idea, definitely writing this down. You’re a real one futileboy

I also need the drummer to have bracelets and anklets lined with very loud bells

•

u/contactcapybara 30m ago

That would actually work!

Between sporting events and concerts these people harass millions of people per year. Kind of crazy that the city can't/won't do anything about this nonsense.

I'd have gone with a snare drum or tambourines. The bass drum is too low of a sound. We can still hear every word he says.

Gotta venmo? I must contribute to this experience

Should add a tuba player next time, and horns, a horn section is awesome.

Real talk: I would pitch in for this. Or really, any LEGAL way to annoy these people back.

Next a loudspeaker just reading the names and positions in megachurches and the Republican Party of pedophiles, convicted rapists, and antigay closet cases.

That drummer could probably drum up a few more gigs like this and quit his day job.

Thank you for your service. We should start a go fund me to put a drummer on salary.

Not that I necessarily endorse this, but what about using a loop machine to basically record and play back what the preacher says with a slight delay?

I know from countless Zoom calls that it's incredibly hard to continue speaking when you can hear your own echo at a delay. At least it short circuits my own brain.
