According to that Bloomberg article MacKenzie Scott sold $12.6B worth of Amazon shares in 2025, which with WA's new capital gains tax would net the state $882m

Wouldn't the cap gains tax exempt her given she has freely given over $26b to charitable causes?

Edit: sorry, its early and just processed you specified 2025. She donated over $7b in 2025 alone to over 225 organizations. Point is, she is one of the rare billionaires I don't have an issue with giving tax breaks, given her established record of putting far more than she would owe in taxes back into charitable causes.

u/DoingBestWeCan I'm just flaired so I don't get fined Apr 20 '26

Rich people could just give lots of money to their preferred causes and get much less hate (see: Dolly Parton) but when they hoard, we have to reflect how we as a society have failed and try to figure out ways to unfuck our wealth distribution.

If they could just be satisfied with insane wealth, instead of unimaginable wealth, we'd all benefit (including them, IMO).

41

u/carlitospig 🐀 Hot Rat Summer 🐀 Apr 20 '26

The issue is that they think they know better. They’ll build NGOs for a particular cause, hire people, implement something….and then get bored of it and rip it away (see Zuck).

Taxes at least build actual infrastructure.

11

u/DoingBestWeCan I'm just flaired so I don't get fined Apr 20 '26

There are definitely reasons to prefer taxing the wealthy over just waiting to benefit from their largesse, but if they weren't so obsessed with keeping every penny and actually gave routinely, there'd be a lot less will to tax them, and we as taxpayers and citizens wouldn't have to play silly buggers trying to chase down that tax money.

13

u/TheRaggedQueen Apr 20 '26

This. I don't want one big lump sump because a billionaire felt like being nice. I want sustainable cash flow into the government that can then go into schools, health and safety, roads, etc.

4

u/carlitospig 🐀 Hot Rat Summer 🐀 Apr 20 '26

Precisely. And tax built projects usually require some sort of accountability by a third party. (Not that it’s worked in homeless housing projects, which I’m still super confused about, but that’s a whole different thread topic…)

u/Hot-Butterscotch-918 Apr 21 '26

In 'Billionaire Wilderness', Justin Farrell wrote that in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, (home of Teton county, the richest county in America) wealthy folk who drive old pickup trucks and wear worn jeans to try to blend in with the regular folk (the poors) love to say that they are pretty generous with their money towards helping the less fortunate. But in reality, what they do is create a Foundation. They all have to have a Foundation and get their friends to be on the board. Then they have a fancy fundraiser that only their rich friends attend to raise money for their pet cause. They could put money towards things that the townsfolk could actually use, like funding day care for the workers who clean their homes and mow their lawns or building affordable housing so their workers didn't have to commute over mountain passes in the winter to come to work. No, they raise money for things like museums and art centers and buying up more land to lock up so no one can access it on their time off. Their workers don't have the time or energy to visit a museum or art center even if they wanted to. And the wealthy pat themselves on the back for "helping" their community, get a tax write-off and feel important because they're "running" a Foundation. This is why we have to tax the rich. They won't do anything that doesn't directly benefit them and they do nothing useful for the rest of us.

u/anarcho-slut 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 Apr 20 '26

Yet the exceptions to the norm are... exceptions and rare. And the good that they do is outweighed by everything else that the other unimaginably wealthy people do.

So we can just tax them. Or introduce them to a 15' tall melon chopper. And do away with private property and fiat currency.

-6

u/GoodPeopleAreFodder Apr 20 '26

Profit = stolen wages. Stop taking from the working class. Full stop.

3

u/ApprehensiveBuddy446 Apr 20 '26

This sounds like the far-left version of the "taxation is theft" braindead libertarian take lol.

If there's no way to profit from running a business, why would anyone run one? Do you think innovation is possible without funding from investors? Our lifestyle (yours included) is fueled by a level of commerce and innovation that depends on investment existing as a concept lol

1

u/GoodPeopleAreFodder Apr 21 '26

Perfect. Now let’s meet somewhere in the middle.

-2

u/SpookiestSzn 🚆build more trains🚆 Apr 20 '26

You can't run a business without a way to profit are you just firmly against literally all businesses of any kind and don't see the societal good that businesses provide

31

u/jwhibbles Apr 20 '26

I will never agree with this. The funds should be used for the public good and decided upon by the public. Letting one individual choose what gets funded and what doesn't is NOT a world I want to live in. There is no positive coming from someone having so much wealth.

14

u/Chief_Mischief 🚋 Ride the S.L.U.T. 🚋 Apr 20 '26

See response. Yes, she is choosing which charities to donate to, but her philanthropy via the Yield Giving provides financial donations unrestricted to these organizations to use at their own discretion.

10

u/splanks Rainier Valley Apr 20 '26

giving massive unrestricted funds is so god damned baller.

14

u/Dry_Row_7523 Apr 20 '26

I would argue in the current political climate, giving money to an actual charity is better than sending the same amount to the government to buy more weapons,  send more funding to ICE, sign more govt contracts with Palantir…

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Apr 21 '26

democracy depends on people getting informed, educated, and involved civically

78M voted for this. and 90M shrugged and didn't vote

this is what we get

1

u/kobachi Wallingford Apr 21 '26

The problem is you’re substituting democratic investment for the judgment of one plutocrat. Which is not to say that the municipal government in Seattle of King County are particularly effective or smart. But it’s not good to trust billionaires to be the only ones directing funds into public causes.

1

u/LimitedWard 🚆build more trains🚆 Apr 20 '26

There's still an opportunity cost you're not considering. The fact that anyone was able to amass that much money in the first place means those $7b (and much much more) could have been put to good use as tax revenue decades earlier. There's a cost bore by society by the deferral of those funds.

2

u/Chief_Mischief 🚋 Ride the S.L.U.T. 🚋 Apr 20 '26

I'm not denying that, but that wealth was never in her name/control until the divorce. Given the circumstances, I have no issue with Scott and how she is managing that wealth. We can always do the should've discussion under the most ideal of circumstances, but shes already sold off more than half of the Amazon shares she acquired in the divorce and put that towards charitable causes.

-1

u/LimitedWard 🚆build more trains🚆 Apr 20 '26

Why would the manner in which she obtained the wealth in any way diminish my point? If her husband had been taxed appropriately, that money would have been circulating in services that needed it decades prior. And every year that billionaires continue to be undertaxed, the issue continues to compound even under her purview. Her willingness to donate vast sums to good causes is great, but let's also recognize that the timeliness of funds matters a lot as well.

3

u/Chief_Mischief 🚋 Ride the S.L.U.T. 🚋 Apr 20 '26

Because it's some alternate reality beyond this one where we can (appropriately) judge her for amassing billions and skirting taxes, or at least having control over that wealth, which she didn't. It would be akin to your parents winning the lottery and getting over $1b after taxes, and you getting flak for not contributing "your" wealth back towards the greater good during the years before you inherit whatever is left of that fortune.

Again, I am of the opinion that billionaires shouldn't exist, but in this reality where they do, I am okay with how she is managing the billions she only acquired ~7 years ago, but her specifically.

1

u/LimitedWard 🚆build more trains🚆 Apr 20 '26

I'm not judging her in any way. I'm saying that there's no good justification for supporting giving tax breaks to billionaires, which is what you stated two comments earlier despite agreeing that billionaires shouldn't exist. The fact that she donated large sums to good causes should be irrelevant to the conversation of taxing the ultrawealthy.

3

u/Chief_Mischief 🚋 Ride the S.L.U.T. 🚋 Apr 20 '26

She donated far more to charitable causes than the government would've received in taxes, which was the specific condition for me saying I'm okay with her getting tax breaks. If the government did its job and taxed billionaires appropriately, we wouldnt be having this conversation now, but that's again a what-if that isn't grounded in reality today.

If we want to have a realistic conversation on wealth inequality, we would close the loopholes that allow billionaires to retain their wealth (leveraging shares as collateral for tax-free debt), whereas Scott straight up sells or donates her Amazon shares. They're not exactly the same thing.

u/NiobiumThorn Apr 20 '26

Fuck her. Nobody deserves such absurd power. Do you really think she worked 100,000 times harder than the average person?

No. It's exploitation.

I'm so fucking sick of pretending there is such a thing as a "good" billionaire.

20

u/Chief_Mischief 🚋 Ride the S.L.U.T. 🚋 Apr 20 '26

Nobody deserves such absurd power.

Which is why she has been freely giving away so much of her wealth.

Do you really think she worked 100,000 times harder than the average person?

Do you even know how she acquired that wealth...? She stepped back from a hands-on role in 1996 to focus on literature and family, well before the launch of AWS and Amazon's shift to tech in 2002 when their stock valuation exploded. All of that wealth was in Bezos' name until the divorce in 2019, from which point forward has had her contributing significant amounts of her initial $35b in Amazon stock towards charities.

To be clear, I also do not approve of the existence of billionaires, but she has utilized her privileged circumstances to the benefit of society. Are you going to also condemn her children for being in a billionaire's family through no fault of their own?

5

u/IIIIlllIIIIIlllII Eastside Apr 20 '26

Its also bad to be jealous and resentful

-6

u/NiobiumThorn Apr 20 '26

That's our exploited labor in her bank account. They're lucky to be alive.

6

u/max_caulfield_ Apr 20 '26

But... she didn't earn that money, and then divorced the asshole that did? And is now giving it away by the billions? I hate 99% of billionaires too but I'm struggling to understand your argument on this one

2

u/IIIIlllIIIIIlllII Eastside Apr 20 '26

I dont think there's too many of those early amazon employees complaining about their labor being exploited. lol

2

u/ChiefOfTheFourPeaks 🚲 Life's Better on a Bike. 🚲 Apr 20 '26

I dunno, should talk to Mike Daisey.

1

u/ApprehensiveBuddy446 Apr 20 '26

I'm so fucking sick of pretending there is such a thing as a "good" billionaire.

She didn't earn her money she got it from divorce and then immediately started to give it away. So the moment she had her chance to be a good person, she took it.

There is no such thing as a good billionaire because good people will give their money away too fast to ever reach $1B. In her case she couldn't give it away until actually getting divorced, so I think the rule doesn't fit her as well. The rule fits better when someone gains wealth over a long time and consistently decides they want more, all the way to $1B.

21

u/AlphaBetacle Apr 20 '26

These people should have never been allowed to amass more than a billion dollars.

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 Apr 21 '26

thank the republicans and them passing tax cuts every time they are in power

9

u/urbanlife78 Apr 20 '26

I support both, tax the rich and be cool with any of the scorned divorced women using that money for good

12

u/MoeGreenMe Deluxe Apr 20 '26

I actually like things being built so the public can enjoy it in our lifetime.

These public- private partnerships are cost efficient and fast.

This would be a 15 year project with studies and cost overruns if the city had to do it.

6

u/cubitoaequet Apr 20 '26

This one seems nice, but "public- private partnerships" is generally just a euphemism for privatization aka looting the public.

Ask Chicago about their parking meters.

5

u/MoeGreenMe Deluxe Apr 20 '26

That Chicago deal was not a partnership it was a privatization.

The city sold 36,000 parking meters for 75 years for $1.15 billion in upfront cash.

It was a disastrous, lopsided sale for the city and in no way resembles what is happening here.

-1

u/cubitoaequet Apr 20 '26

No shit. I literally said

This one seems nice, but "public- private partnerships" is generally just a euphemism for privatization aka looting the public.

Are redditors allergic to reading the comments they reply to?

2

u/wiscowonder Bainbridge Island Apr 20 '26

Maybe?... I mean the waterfront has changed pretty drastically since I moved here 12 plus years ago, I don't think that that was in any way privately funded 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Own_Reaction9442 Olympia Apr 22 '26

It did but a lot of that was the result of the viaduct removal project, which actually started nearly 19 years ago.

I’ll text them right now, what’s their number lol

1

u/y-c-c Apr 21 '26

It's not like you can't have both.

But the issue that surrounds a lot of public works projects is often not just money, but the political process inherent to how a democratic government works. Everyone wants an input and if you do something for one group of people, another group wants it too. This won't change just because you have more funding.

The trail runs along the east side of Alaskan Way from near Pier 62 to Clay Street and replaces old trolley tracks and sidewalks with new plant beds with trees, shrubs and perennials; lighting and benches; and space for walkers, runners, bikers and more.

So basically going from behind the aquarium down to the sculpture park

94

u/david_ynwa Apr 20 '26

I believe this trail goes all away along to the Expedia campus. It was still all fenced off the last time I went along (only the bike lane open), but it was looking like it'll be really nice.

25

u/aerorail55 Mariners Apr 20 '26

Maybe I’m slow because it’s Monday but I can’t understand what is new here, this was already a trail

27

u/david_ynwa Apr 20 '26

It used to have 80s era furniture and signage, etc. It was looking very dated. It's all been upgraded, new seats, rope fencing, children's playground, a new toilet block with concession stand and bike parking with air for tires, and there has been a lot of planting. It still hasn't all grown in yet, but it is looking so much nicer.

I believe they also regraded the beaches. I remember my mum couldn't get down there due to having to climb over big tree trunks. It looks like you can just walk down now.

34

u/Pure-Rip4806 Apr 20 '26

previously, it was only a trail on the water side of the street. Now there is a trail on the inland side as well. eta: they are also fixing the perma-closed bathroom by the fishing pier

15

u/fsck_ Apr 20 '26

If you mean the trail through sculpture park and centennial, it's the exact same path as before. They repaved both walk and bike paths though, and massively redid the entire landscaping over the past year and added light posts. It's a huge improvement once they open the walking side soon.

8

u/mellow-drama Posse on Broadway Apr 20 '26

Removal of the old unused trolley tracks opened up a good amount of space without impacting the road or the buildings.

I’d genuinely wonder how many of those people/women were encourage by their male partners to vote a certain way. A lot of women are still not the bread winner in true equal partnership, there’s a lot of control that comes with that.

Beyond all of this, I believe the data around Musk stealing the election. Trump winning a lot of the swing states by just under the amount that would warrant a review + Elon gloated about this when he was having his public feud with trump.

The last thing you want in Seattle is what's happening to the Blazers right now: a cheapskate out of town owner who doesn't care.

This was already such a gem of a trail, look forward to checking out the updates.

If you haven't been before, I recommend a nice summer day twilight hour when it's clear and the mountain is out...it's pretty spectacular.

Cool. Sounds like she should pay a fuck ton more in taxes then.

It'd be cool if she could also fund the State parks and trailheads/trails properly, since the State would rather spend our tax dollars elsewhere.

u/The_Unwashed_Masses That sounds great. Let’s hang out soon. Apr 20 '26

“Trail” is a stretch for this area, but as someone who often walks their dog on the waterfront, I am looking forward to this portion of the waterfront opening up. The revamped Myrtle Edward’s park coming in the next month or so will be a huge improvement as well.

So thankful for the generosity of the local oligarchs! They are such wonderful illustrious people and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to benefit from their success. Thank you!!

Edit: To all the bootlickers, please find a way to stay close to the oligarchs (physically). When they eat, some crumbs may fall into your plates and that is a wonderful thing. Peace!

Nothing to do with the story at hand but why does she keep Gates name?

u/Intelligent_Quiet424 Apr 20 '26

Lots of women keep the married last name so that their name matches their children. It’s a personal decision.

u/AjiChap Apr 20 '26

Yes, it’s obviously a personal decision just wondered why.

She lived with that name for decades; she's probably used to it and views it as her name. One of my divorced relatives did the same.

u/AjiChap Apr 20 '26

A friend of mine did also but never asked her about it.
